l would say Pleasant Valley Sate Prison in Coalinga, California, Fresno County. I was transferred there from CSP Sacramento (New Folsom) in June 2000, and believe me, I was better off at New Folsom, a Level IV maximum security prison. New Folsom had major riots, lockdowns of 6 months apiece, and heavy prison politics, but there was a lot of respect between us and the correctional staff, between us incarcerated here and the free staff. The C/0's basically let us do our time, with the exception of a few. As a matter of fact, these hardened convicts, some with LWOPs (Life Without the possibility of Parole), multiple life sentences, and long terms, were some of the coolest, most respectful and loving people I've ever met (Don't believe the "tough on crime" politics!) Now Pleasant Valley was a Level m medium security prison, but it was worse. There were a lot of youngstas, for one, who gang banged, who created some of the political problems, especially Surenos and skinheads, so the chaos and tensions were really constant. A lot of the problems, though, were really with staff. For example, each person got one roll of toilet paper and one bar of soap per week. Now if you ran out of one and/or the other before the end of the week, you'll have a very hard time getting the building officer to get you some more. If he actually decides to answer your request for more TP, you're not going to get another roll; you'll get a "partial," which are pieces of that roll split into 3 or 4 sections; better make it last! The C/0 won't give you ANY disinfect or AJAX to clean your cell; you literally would have to steal it! The C/O's will write you up for some of the most petty rules, rules that you can even inadvertently break. Some C/O's get off on disrespecting you or violating your rights, but if you file a 602 Appeal on them, they'll hose your appeal, they'll twist their own roles to deny you, they'll lie or misrepresent the facts, and do whatever they have to do to get back at you, like lose your property, scorch your cell and tear it up (in other words, make it look like a tornedo hit it), and generally harass you. Speaking of cell searches, they search a lot! You spend a lot of time at that prison replenishing what they took in the search, and they won't even tell you what they took! We were locked down a lot, but most of the time it was for officer training. If you worked on that day, you may not get a shower! There have been vicious riots there, too, with people getting shot and killed by the police, getting beat up real bad or stuck; the place was on all around nightmare with everyday being something. I think that prison is cursed! (In one of the riots since I !eft, one Bulldog was shot and killed and another had his leg shot off!)All communications between inmates and external channels are facilitated by approved volunteers since inmates do not have access to the internet.
