PDF Editor FAQ

How fast the speed will be if you fly Mach 1 at FL200?

FL 200 refers to operating at the altitude at which the air pressure is equal to the pressure in the international standard atmosphere at 20,000 feet. You multiply the flight level by 100 feet to get the altitude in feet.I often use the following website to compute values from the standard atmosphere: 1976 Standard Atmosphere Calculator. I just went there and entered 20,000 feet. This is the result:One of the output values is speed of sound at that point in the atmosphere. So if you were flying at Mach 1 at FL200, you’d be flying at the speed of sound there - about 316 m/s. It may not be exactly that value since the temperature might be a little different from the standard temperature on the particular day. But it would be close. If you happen to know the temperature offset (how much the actual temperature is above the standard temperature), you could enter that and it would give you the new speed of sound.

What do I do if a pilot cannot understand an ATC instruction, after asking to repeat it many times?

I was flying in Nicaragua one time and neither the copilot nor I could understand what the controller was saying. He got frustrated and we did too. He spoke to the other airplanes in Spanish and only used English for us so we had no idea what he was doing with the other airplanes. If we knew what he was telling other airplanes, you can often figure out what he’s going to tell you. You can use this information to predict what he’s going to say. Finally, he spoke at length in Spanish to another airliner, that airliner told us in perfect English to descend to and maintain FL 200 and contact ATC on 123.4. I’ll bet there were a few choice words for us in the Spanish transmission which were not translated.

What would be the consequences if we fly in CAS/IAS beyond cross over altitude?

There is no problem in flying at specified CAS/IAS even before cross-over altitude. Only thing is that separate 'specifications' of CAS/IAS to be maintained at altitudes above this have to be maintained. In fact, on some low-performance airplanes, some specifications would exist which could say CAS 2o0 Kts upto FL 100, then 180 Kts from there to FL 200, then 160 Kts upto FL 300 and so on . . . . Please remember that those values I gave are sample values that could be expected. However, you also have to ensure that you never exceed the MMO for the airplane model. Therefore as a rule, Mach number is the primary reference above that altitude.
