Yes. This has happened three times so far.The first time was when I was invited by BITS-Pilani to address their students.This was on on Aug 10, 2018. I addressed them over a video link. The students were assembled in a hall at BITS Pilani and there were about 200 of them. I was seated comfortably in my home in Devanahalli. I could see them sitting in the hall and felt they were assembled right before me. It was my first such experience.About a year later I attended live conference on how Social media can be used constructively in the field of education and I addressed an elite gathering of experts on education, consisting of school and college principals, senior teachers, head masters, and Directors of education from all over the country on April 13, 2019 at the ball room at Hotel Taj Land's end, Bandra Mumbai. Here is the video. It lasts for about 20 minutes.They had even displayed a cutout of me in that hall. Here is me, posing by the side of that cutout.More recently, I was invited to address the students of the Institute of Management Studies (IMS Ghaziabad). I really doubt these reductions were common before the 17th century. I’ve taken a look at some old texts, most notably from the 12th to 16th centuries and haven’t found any example of such phenomena.*Note: I’ve tried to keep the original graphy of the texts. Bocage (1765–1805), idem.Yes, they were educated men (3 lawyers, to be more specific), but we are talking about written registers in an illiterate age, after all.We start seeing the initial “e” disappear once again in the early 19th century (in Portugal, at least) in some texts, normally to simbolize colloquial speech.Judging from this, my (hopefully) educated guess is that the transition estar -> star -> tar started in the late 18th century, becoming more widespread in the 19th and 20th centuries, more slowly in Portugal than in Brazil (due to a larger influx of African slaves and, later on, European immigrants, creating a scenario more prone to phonetical changes in the latter).tl;dr: 19th-20th centuries.
