PDF Editor FAQ

Have you been invited to speak to an audience only because your presence and activity on Quora was noticed?

Yes. This has happened three times so far.The first time was when I was invited by BITS-Pilani to address their students. This was on on Aug 10, 2018. I addressed them over a video link. The students were assembled in a hall at BITS Pilani and there were about 200 of them. I was seated comfortably in my home in Devanahalli. I could see them sitting in the hall and felt they were assembled right before me. It was my first such experience.About a year later I attended live conference on how Social media can be used constructively in the field of education and I addressed an elite gathering of experts on education, consisting of school and college principals, senior teachers, head masters, and Directors of education from all over the country on April 13, 2019 at the ball room at Hotel Taj Land's end, Bandra Mumbai. Here is the video. It lasts for about 20 minutes. They had even displayed a cutout of me in that hall. Here is me, posing by the side of that cutout.More recently, I was invited to address the students of the Institute of Management Studies (IMS Ghaziabad). I addressed them over a Zoom video conference on Saturday Oct 10, 2020.I was happy to receive very positive feedback in an email and also a nice appreciation certificate from the Institute. This was the email I received.Just in case the email is not readable in this screen shot, here is a copy of the email.Director IMSOct 10, 2020, 5:16 PM (10 days ago)to me, PriyankaDear Sir,It was a matter of privilege for us to virtually connect with you on our Virtual Career Enrichment Talk, Series 5 on ' Youth & Career Development‘ on 10th Oct 2020.It seems everyone I talk to, wants me to express appreciation for your inspiring presentation in the program. Your immense body of knowledge, vast experience and your approach to anticipating student’s intents and ability to present the subject in such an interesting way produced one of the most memorable experiences for all the listeners. Your words of wisdom emanating from the assimilation of theory & practice as a leading practitioner will illuminate our path to progress. The fact that you agreed to spare time for us from your busy schedule, speaks volumes of your eagerness, zeal & commitment in guiding us to grow.I personally stand indebted to you for your hand holding and making this day special and enriching. We are sure that your patronage will be available to us always.Best regards,Dr Sapna RakeshDirectorINSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES, GHAZIABADUNIVERSITY COURSES CAMPUSNH-09, ADHYATMIK NAGAR, GHAZIABAD0120 -4980000 (+30 Lines)Toll- Free- 1800 102 1214www.imsuc.ac.inThey were gracious to send me an appreciation certificate too. Here it is.I am thankful to fellow Quoran Shiv B for choosing me to address the students and recommending my name to the Director of the Institute. Shiv also conducted the proceedings very ably.In addition I have discussed my Quora experiences with many individuals and smaller gatherings innumerable times over Google Meet and Zoom and have also been interviewed by Youtubers and bloggers.Such experiences make all the time and effort I spend on Quora worthwhile.

When did Portuguese speakers began reducing the verb "estar" into "tar"? 17th century Portuguese-based creoles already have "ta" and "taba" from "estar". Is it then an ancient feature in colloquial Portuguese?

I really doubt these reductions were common before the 17th century. I’ve taken a look at some old texts, most notably from the 12th to 16th centuries and haven’t found any example of such phenomena.*Note: I’ve tried to keep the original graphy of the texts. For better comprehension, please note that the letter “s” was sometimes written as “ſ” (the so-called long “s”) and the letters “v” and “u” might switch places. Ex: vſo = uso.In some ancient texts from the early 13th century, you can see the omission of the first “e”, such as in D. Afonso II’s testament letter [1](1214):e todas aqelas couſas que deos mi deu en poder, ſten en paz e en folgãcia. This is a remnant feature of Latin, because the verb estar comes from stāre (“to stand”). Later texts, however, always write the initial “e”.Camões, for example, was quite consistent in his spelling when writing the Lusíadas[2] (1572):Eſtà a gente maritima de Luſo,Subida pela exarcia, de admirada,Notando o eſtrangeiro modo, & vſo,E a lingoagem tam barbara & enleada.Gil Vicente also consistently uses the full verbal form of estar in O Auto da Barca do Inferno[3] (1531):Pois canteu bem fora eſtoude teleuar para laa.Eſſoutra te leuaraavay pera quem tenganouOnzeneyro. For those who are a bit curious about how this looked on paper, there you go (notice the lack of question marks as well):One might argue, though, that these authors preferred formal vocabulary. In that case, I suppose we should take a closer look into old songs, such as Fernão Gonçalves de Seabra’s work[4] (late 13th century):A mia ſenhor atanto lhe farei:quero lheu ja ſoffrer tod outro malque me faça; pero direi vos al:de pram, aqueſto lhe nom ſoffrerei:eu eſtar muito que a nom veja.Gregório de Matos Guerra (1636–1696), writing in the late 17th century, didn’t reduce the verb estar, either. Tomás António Gonzaga (1744–1810), ditto. Bocage (1765–1805), idem.Yes, they were educated men (3 lawyers, to be more specific), but we are talking about written registers in an illiterate age, after all.We start seeing the initial “e” disappear once again in the early 19th century (in Portugal, at least) in some texts, normally to simbolize colloquial speech.Judging from this, my (hopefully) educated guess is that the transition estar -> star -> tar started in the late 18th century, becoming more widespread in the 19th and 20th centuries, more slowly in Portugal than in Brazil (due to a larger influx of African slaves and, later on, European immigrants, creating a scenario more prone to phonetical changes in the latter).tl;dr: 19th-20th centuries. No, it’s not an ancient feature, but rather a relatively recent one.
