It faithfully captures the life in and around street hoods asthey grind out a living in the family of capo Paulie Cicero(Sorvino), real life counterpart was Paul Vario.As the movie begins, Henry Hill, a teenager, is captivated and drawn into “the life” by the wealth of mobsters and disdain for any laws except their own.With limited dialogue, “Goodfellas” accurately portrays the corruption that existed during Henry Hill’s years in the Mafia.Beat cops take bribes from and ignore hijackings by Robert De Niro’s crew, in real life Jimmy “The Gent” Burke.Mere facial expressions suggest the crew’s lawyer(Edward Hayes) has a long-standing relationship with the judge who presides over Hill’s 1st court case.You see prison guards(Ed Deacy & Larry Silvestri) on the take. Jailed capos feasting on Italian delicacies.This corruption is based on hard reality. In the 1980s, 8 Chicago judges and 34 lawyers were convicted of various bribery/corruption offenses.The film does a nice job showing how a truck hijacking was carried out at Kennedy Airport. The Luchese family had a lock on Teamsters Local 295.The driver(Luke Walter) cooperates with hoods. The hoods know what valuables the truck carries. The movie shows the intimidation tactics that hijackersuse to assure silence by drivers, taking their drivers license with their name and address. No crime is too big or too small.“Goodfellas” shows the duplicity of married life in the mob. Friday night is for the girlfriend at the Copa. Henny “take my wife” Youngman is the comic.Violence is better pictured in “Goodfellas” than The Godfather I. The violence is bloodier. Michael Ballhaus’ camera lingers longer on the gore.Brando’s Godfather makes the Mafia into cult heroes. Thugs and Goons in “Goodfellas”.Who would want to be a Mafioso— live “The Life”—after watching “Goodfellas” and seeing Henry Hill wind up in the witness protection program?
