Yes, with a story. I was driving one of my contractors home for the night. The police like to sit at the corner of our street and the state route. An officer lights me up. I’ve left my case with all documents at the house, so I’m a bit concerned - this was supposed to be an uneventful short hop in a small town - they’ve already rolled up the sidewalks for the night. My contractor is really concerned because he’s not sure if he has any warrants. (grin, I hire him for his skills, not his domestique dramas) I hadn’t done anything wrong in traffic, so the stop is a mystery. The officer is trying to figure out what the deal is with my plates. The truck is owned by my business partner, so it’s not coming back to my license. The tags are dated correctly, but the license number isn’t in the system. My license is free of any violations for 20 years, so I have a fair amount of credibility. While he’s waiting for more information on the tags, he turns to my contractor… He doesn’t have ID, but he rattles off his SS. Officer goes and runs it. Comes back, says that SS doesn’t exist, asks for it again. The officer had written it down incorrectly. (Not having a good night?) He’s a sport, takes ownership of the foobar. Runs it again. This time itcomes back and contractor is clean. Back to me. When a vehicle isn’t registered for a year, it is deleted from the system. The officer can’t understand how & why this has gone unnoticed. The truck is a daily driver.After all was said and done, he didn’t rain down on me, just a warning. At the very least he could have racked up three figures in tickets, at worst he could have impounded the truck. Next day I went to the BVM to take care of the mess my business partner had made of the tags. Funny how resolving most issues with the government simply requires spending more money. The origins of the date tag remain a mystery. I’ve since taken responsibility for keeping the vehicles current.I’ve noticed that I tend to get warnings instead of tickets, presumably because of my clean-ish driving record and my speed violations don’t cause dangerous situations.
