What is something you did in school that went "down in history"?

In my senior year, I was the editor in chief of our school paper. I and some staffers of the paper joined an inter-school journalism competition, known in the Philippines as the National Schools Press Conference. It was a contest where the individual skills of each staffer were tested (editorial writing, news writing, editorial cartoon drawing, etc), and where the overall quality of a school’s paper was judged, based on a sample issue of their paper. Now we were able to get through the divisional rounds of the competition easily, but we knew that the regional rounds were a more difficult affair, since we were going up against the best from our school division and from other provinces in the region as well. So to improve our chances of winning, we decided to enter a newer edition of our school paper.Layout wise, it looked a lot better than the older edition which we entered for the divisional round. Content wise however, it was a lot different. How different? The old ossue we entered for the divisional round contained what we called “plain vanilla” articles, dry pieces describing everyday events happening in school, congratulating winners from our school of interscholastic academic and athletic competitions, and feature articles about the latest trends and fads among the students. The new issue, however, contained a lot of articles which were critical of people who were criticizing our high school (at that time, a columnist for our local paper wrote an innuendo filled column which satirized the school, so we got him back in our paper) and at the same time, critical of both the behavior and policies of certain faculty and staff of the school. And all of this was written under the supervision of our school paper’s faculty advisor. At that time, we felt like we were vanguards of a new age of openness and transparency in our school. We felt like revolutionaries, pioneers so to speak. It was probably one of the most exciting times of my high school life. The paper itself won a lot of awards durong the regional round of the competition, due to bith the layout and content. A lot of people heaped praise on the paper, calling it groundbreaking and capable of winning awards in the national rounds. But back home, the reaction we got was a lot different. Our school’s principal, as well as the faculty and staff criticized in the paper, were livid after reading our paper. After getting back from the regional rounds of the competition, they raised holy hell upon us, read us the riot act and threatened to expel us. So did we apologize, grovel, get on our knees and beg for mercy? No.We staged a protest rally, a few days before they were to convene disciplinary hearings against the staff of the paper and I, citing harrassment and suppression of press freedom and freedom of expression. This shocked the school’s administration enough to delay our suspension and/or expulsion, but what followed was even worse. Some faculty members, led by our paper’s faculty advisor, then staged a protest rally in support of us. Now this was something new and unexpected. The school administration was expecting that our little protest rally was wholly planned by us, and supported only by a faction of the student body. They never expected members of the faculty to support us.Unfortunately, they dealt with this matter in what, in my opinion, was the worst way possible. They sacked the teachers who supported us, with the implied warning that we would be next. At the same time, they withheld certificates of good moral character which some of us needed to enter college. While we wanted to fight on and continue with our protests, the sacked teachers who supported us advised us to lie low, keep quiet and just focus on our studies. We have done enough, they said. We have made ourselves heard, and brought our cause to the forefront. It was, time, they said, for them to take up our fight. And they did, by suing the school for illegal termination. The rest of the school year was anticlimatic at that point, after the rush and excitement of the competition and the rallies. We focused on our academic work, graduated, and left school. The lawsuit by the teachers, on the other hand, wasnt decided until about 4 years after we left high school. In the meantime, they were hired by other schools, who were more than eager to have them teach with them due to their skill and expertise. As for my school paper’s staff and I…If we didnt stage our little protest, we would have gone to the university our high school was affiliated with, since we were all but guaranteed admission there. But we knew that wasn’t likely to happen now, especially without the certificates of good moral character from our school. To make matters worse, that university was considered as one of the city’s most prestigious, giving its graduates a social cachet that was essential if you were applying for jobs within the city. So nonadmission there was a ttagedy for some of my fellow paper staffers. So we went to other local universities. In my case, I was lucky to have been given admission to the local campus of the University of the Philippines. I majored in Physics and Math there, finished one semester eaely, and went on to get my masters and Ph. D. in physics. The rest of my paper’s staff did well for themselves too. One is now a lawyer, another is a doctor, the rest professionals occupying supervisory and managerial positions in their respective companies. Not bad for a bunch of “rebellious degenerates” who were not expected to amount to much.Oh, and we never did get to the national rounds of the competition, as punishment for our little stunt. But considering what happened to me after graduating from high school, it was totally worth it.
