What happened at your job that destroyed your faith in humanity?

A teenage daughter with her shabby looking father complaining of severe pain in lower abdomen came to my hospital one day.Soon the reports of a botched up partial abortion were confirmed. The girl was looking very timid and she was uneducated too. She was in a lot of pain and barely uttered a word. It was clearly a police case as Abortion in India after 20 weeks of pregnancy is illegal. A team of three gynecologists with an anesthetist started the process of MTP (Medical Termination of Pregnancy) after taking the written consent. We were guessing it was a either a rape case or child marriage.Next day the girl's mother came and she told us that her father had raped the girl! The mother knew this from the very first day but was helpless! The doctors and I were shocked! Humanity died right there in front of us...The girl was discharged in overall good condition. She was anemic and doctor prescribed some tonics and antibiotics. After a few days the man came again for some formalities of pending medical bills. There was no guilt or remorse on his face. I tried to warn him saying the girl's life can be in danger if this repeats. I told him he is the father. He should be protecting his daughter from all harm. His response: "Mere Bageeche ka phool - main nahi soonghunga to aur kaun soonghega?" (A flower of MY garden. If I don't smell it, who will smell it?)After few days I heard he was in prison. To this day, I feel the rage filling my head when I think of this incident.Edit: I am the reason he is in prison!

Is Britain a more free country than the United States? In what ways is it more free?

Despite having an established church, Britain does not have large numbers of people pushing a religious agenda in its government. Abortion is firmly legal and nobody is trying to teach Creationism in schools. The idea that an employer could prevent you from using the birth control of your choice would be laughable in the UK, a gross violation of workers’ rights. The Conservative party introduced same-sex marriage. There is no death penalty. The police almost never shoot anybody (in the whole UK they discharged a firearm only 7 times last year). British people’s rights are protected by the European Convention on Human Rights. You don’t have to carry a weapon to feel safe; you just are safe. These things make the British more free.

What are some common false or misleading statistics cited in the gun control debate?

The most misleading statistic cited in the gun control debate also happens to be the most common one. That’s right, I am talking about the one statistic that EVERYONE must have heard by now. It goes something like “Every year, 33,000 thousand people are killed by gun violence”.What one never hears is how exactly these 33K people died. Luckily, I’ve found a handy graph, which seems accurate, to illustrate that:Two thirds of those 33K people die from suicides, a small portion die from getting shot by the cops or by accident, and the other 1/3 die from homicide. Keep in mind, some of these homicides are gang-related; gangsters shoot other gangsters. Personally, I’m not exactly going to shed any tears over gang members getting shot, but that’s besides the point. The homicide figure also includes justified shootings. Again, not exactly something that needs prevention. However, this number of 33K is presented as though EVERYONE died from being shot by someone else, as though NOBODY committed suicide. The very name “Gun violence” implies that all of these deaths were due to people shooting other people, rather than most of them shooting themselves. My response to including suicides in the gun violence figure is something that quite a few people must have surely seen by now, but I will say it again:What I find funny is the fact that this figure tends to come from those that identify themselves as liberal. Now, most liberals also tend to support abortion, with the most common reason for doing so being bodily autonomy, also known as “My body, my choice”. They do not include abortions in any homicide statistic. Yet these very same people then come out of the woodwork to present a statistic of “Gun violence” that includes suicides and claim that the government ought to tighten gun laws to prevent these deaths, including preventing suicides. Suicide is as much a matter of bodily autonomy, perhaps even more so, as abortion is. Why is it that these people support abortion because “My body, my choice”, but then argue that the community must prevent suicides. Why do they not think that “My body, my choice” applies to suicide as well? Seems a bit hypocritical, doesn’t it?Here’s a short version of what I’ve just said above:Now, I support abortion, so I have no qualms with excluding suicides. But pro-choicers who include suicides in their statistic? They must be either hypocritical in their beliefs or they don’t actually seek to prevent suicide but still use the statistic to push their agenda. In both cases, it is misleading. Now, here is a second, less common statistic:The number of school shootingsIf you ever hear someone claim that “There were [Insert Number Here] school shootings in the US in [Insert Time Period Here]”, you had better ask the one making the claim to define “School shooting”, especially if it is some absurdly high number. The typical definition used for “School shooting” tends to be :Incidents in which a firearm was discharged at a school infrastructure or campus in the United States, including incidents of shootings on a school bus. This list contains school shooting incidents that occurred on the campuses of K-12 public schools and private schools as well as colleges and universities. From Wikipedia.Note how it says “In which a firearm was discharged”. This suddenly sheds a light on why there are supposedly shit loads of school shootings happening: The statistic includes someone committing suicide in the parking lot of an abandoned school, a gang shooting after hours, and an accidental discharge,to name a few. Also, note how the stat also includes colleges and universities, but is presented as though this only happens to K-12 students. And the final statistic:The number of mass shootings in generalThis isn’t intentionally misleading so much as it is a matter of definition. However, the words “Mass shooting” tend to invoke in one’s mind an image of dozens of bodies eviscerated by gunfire. The actual definition of a mass shooting and casualties thereof varies from source to source. For instance, before 2012, the FBI and a report by Mother Jones used the definition of “A public shooting in which 4 or more people, excluding the perpetrator, were killed”. The definition also excludes gang shootouts and armed robberies. After 2012, the definition was changed to 3 people. Other sources use 4 or more injured, including the perpetrator, 4 or more killed, including the perpetrator, etc.Depending on the definition used, the number of mass shootings can be massively inflated or deflated. Personally, I use the FBI definition. Now, on the pro-gun side:We have the number of defensive shootings:Some pro-gun folks (Like the one who made the graph above) will claim with ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY that the number of times people have use guns in self-defense per year is 2.5 million (Some even round it up to 3 million), citing a study by the CDC during the Obama years. This is misleading. The study cited concludes that between 500,000 and 2.5 million defensive shootings occur each year. Here’s the study in question: Priorities for Research to Reduce the Threat of Firearm-Related ViolenceThere have been other studies, and they mostly come up with some figure between these two extremes (But one came up with 100,000), but the number of DGUs is NOT CERTAIN. So anyone claiming that the number of defensive gun uses is some concrete, specific number is probably biased.
