What's the most inaccurate thing your child has ever been taught in school?

My daughter was in the 3rd grade and came home with a math assignment having to do with exponents. Now I am not a math person; that job belongs to her dad, who is a chemical engineer. I did notice, however, that she appeared to have confused the term “cubed" as being to the 4th power instead of the 3rd. When I pointed this out, she insisted vehemently that her teacher had taught her “cubed” was to the 4th power that very day! So, though my head was exploding, I could see that there was no point in arguing with her.It was time to hand this educational debacle over to the chemical engineer. My husband also did his best to convince our darling daughter of the fact that “cubed" is indeed to the 3rd power, but to no avail. At this point, she was very upset and tearfully said, “Daddy, if I do it the way you say, I will get it wrong, and I don't want to get it wrong.” Her father assured her that her answer was correct, and told her that if she had any problems, he would have her back. We expected that to be the end of it.The next day she came home with red marks on her homework and an “I told you so" attitude. “SEE?” she said, as she handed me the paper. My next step was to call my husband and explain the current state of affairs. He sent a very polite email to my daughter's 3rd grade teacher outlining some basic math facts for her review. We never got a response, but my daughter reported that her teacher at least returned to the lesson and taught the material correctly, after telling the class that there was a “typo” in the math book.Good grief. 🤯

What was the harshest thing a teacher ever told you in school?

5th grade. My teacher was Mrs Johnson.A little back story here. My oldest brother ( 6 years older) taught me to read before I was 1. At that time, we were still using the Dick & Jane readers. Rick started school the week I was born. (I was a labor day baby) by the time i was old enough, probably 3–4 months old, he would sit with me in his lap and read aloud to me, pointing at each wordas he said the word. As a result, i was reading before I could run.By the time I started school, i was reading Rick's 6th grade books for enjoyment. In 3rd grade, I had already read the 8th grade English Literature book.Back to 5th grade. Rick was a junior in high school, and when he would bring home library books, i would sneak them and read them when he was not around. One book was “Of Mice and Men”. I was really bored with the 5th grade reading list, so, when book report time came around, I did mine on Steinbeck's little book. When Mrs Johnson returned it, I was shocked to see an F. After class, I asked why I failed the report, and she accused me of having one of my older brothers do the report for me.To say the least, I was PISSED. Not only did I do all the work, but , to be honest, neither of my brothers could have comprehended the book like I did. Neither of them were serious readers, and Rick only picked the book because it is a short novella (i think about 150 pages or less).Afterward: in 8th grade, I came down with a severe case of bronchitis, which made me too sick to concentrate on even reading. That was the longest week of my life. I had a book report due two days after getting over being sick, and remembered coming across a folder of my old school work a short while before. I looked through them and found that book report. I re-wrote it word-for-word, and turned it in. I got a C because the book wasn't on our approved reading list.In 11th grade, I did this again, just for fun and got an A. I guess it just took my teachers 6 years to catch up to me.It is never too early to give your child a love for reading.

When do gifted children first realize they are different from other children?

It really took me a while. Hell, I’m 44 years old and I’m still realizing how different my brain functions compared to most people.I remember, as a child, reading earlier, faster, and better than the other students, but that didn’t really register much for me.I do remember freaking people out in the 3rd grade by hearing the teacher read a poem in class (50. Strictly Germ-proof. Arthur Guiterman. Modern American Poetry), then being able to recite it from memory the next day, just based on that audio input (I had no idea what most of those words meant, but I could recite them, phonetically…I still can, though I have to struggle to pronounce some of the words correctly, as my teacher mispronounced them).Same grade was the first time I read a Stephen King novel, Salem’s Lot, and turned in a book report on it.In the 4th grade, our teacher had a daily trivia game based on the old game show Tic-Tac-Dough; after I won about 30–40 straight games, she forced me to stop. I wasn’t happy about it at all….But, here’s the thing, it’s really difficult to truly identify what’s different. As a kid, I just assumed I’m smarter than everybody else, and thus, better. It took a long, long time for me to realize that my brain is just wired differently and absorbs things ridiculously easily…it doesn’t make me any better than other people, it just makes me a sponge.(though this doesn’t stop me from going on Jeopardy and winning gift cards at the local bar trivia contests!)
