I have been watching every step that China has taken in the recent past, it seemed belligerent and even stupid at most times and did not make sense until last week.First -It used its stooge, Nepal’s prime minister K P Oli to instigate IndiaWhen India’s response was measured, China got into the act itself in Galwan valleySituation escalated quickly with India not taking a step back. Though the situation de-escalated after lot of efforts, it was surprising to see China blame India for the escalation and to play victim card. Very unlike ChinaFollowing America’s lead Australia came down strongly on China for its alleged role in the spread of Coronavirus. China in return blamed US, Brazil and everybody else except itselfUS in an attempt to isolate China and in support of India, has moved its aircraft carriers to south China seaSeveral countries along with Japan have openly supported India in banning Chinese apps and condemning China for their aggressive postureWhen the world thought they had China on their knees, China played its master card - China’s giant $400 billion deal with Iran.US sanctions on Iran:Iran's economy was badly affected for several years by sanctions imposed by the international community over the country's nuclear program. In 2015, President Hassan Rouhani agreed to a deal with the US and five other world powers to limit Iranian nuclear activities in return for the lifting of those sanctions.The following year, after the deal was implemented, Iran's economy bounced back and GDP grew 12.3%, according to the Central Bank of Iran. But much of that growth was attributed to the oil and gas industry, and the recoveries of other sectors were not as significant as many Iranians had hoped.However, the Trump administration in a 180 degree policy U turn, reimposed the sanctions in 2019. Washington calls it ‘maximum pressure,’ strategy which aims to change Iran’s international behavior by bringing oil exports down to zero.In May, US also ended special waivers which was provided for China, India, Japan, South Korea and Turkey to buy Oil from Iran. After May these countries could face US sanctions themselves if they continued to buy oil from Iran. Which meant isolation of Iran was complete. Iran had no where else to go but to China!Last straw?On July 3rd, an explosion reportedly damaged a power plant in the Iranian city of Ahvaz, the latest in a series of mysterious blasts in the country that prompted Iran to issue a warning to Israel and the US earlier this week. An Isralei TV report said the attack 'destroyed' a laboratory where Iran was developing advanced centrifuges for faster uranium enrichment.China’s giant $400 billion deal with Iran:Ignoring U.S. efforts to isolate Iran from global markets and following an August visit by Iran Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to Beijing, the two countries agreed to update a 25-year program signed in 2016, to include an unprecedented $400 billion of investment in the Iranian economy.Using the corona situation and the prevailing friendship between India and US, China has created a situation where it can forge a relationship with Iran without worrying about the rest of the world. By pushing India closer to US, it has given Iran a valid reason to break ties with India. As a result Iran seems to have dropped India from Chabahar project citing funding delay.The China-Iran deal is the latest step in Beijing’s attempt to expand from a regional hegemony to a world power via BRI (Belt and Road Initiative) and they seem to have played their card exceptionally well.Lets not forget that "there's clearly a trend in terms of deepening negative attitudes to the US in how it executes foreign policy," said Christopher Whitney, executive director for studies at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs which helped coordinate the 18-country poll on how US conducts its foreign policy. Friend of foe, US foreign policy serves only the interest of Americans.This seems to be a bigger game that what meets our eyes, let’s hope India plays its hand better!
