For someone aspiring to start a game company, how valuable is it to attend the Game Developers Conference and what level of pass would you recommend?

GDC is an awesome event, it's a great place to network and learn all sorts of things. Frankly, I don't see the point of going if you aren't going to get the All Access Pass. You're probably already spending for a plane ticket and hotel room anyway, you might as well go all the way.The real reason you want to go to GDC is for the talks. An all access pass gets you into any talk you want AND gets you access to the Vault, so you can watch videos of all the talks you missed. The first two days are the summits and tutorials, where people are going to get really in depth about really interesting things like Artifical Intelligence, and Narrative. The next three days are talks about all sorts of amazing subjects by all sorts of companies. Everything from the most cutting edge AAA studios talking about how they did their graphics, to mobile studios explaining how they convinced so many people to spend money on their game.I couldn't honestly tell you which is better. They're both amazing in different ways. What I can tell you is that you are missing out if you miss the summits or the main conference. The expo pass on its own isn't worth the money unless you are just going to hand out job applications and showing people your portfolio. There are better ways to get a job in the industry. You're more likely to get a job getting the All Access Pass and talking to the people around you at talks you find interesting. As for how valuable it is for someone who's "aspiring to start a game company;" well I can't tell you that. Aspring to start a game company sounds like "dreaming about burning a big pile of money" to me.It sounds like the kind of thing someone who has no idea what he's getting into would say. You don't need to "aspire to start a company" to make games. You need to start making games. You don't need to go to GDC to do that, you need to download some software, make a plan, and get to work.GDC can be very inspiring, and if you are very lucky you'll end up in a realistic talk about indie development where someone will tell you how hard it's been for them, and all the ways they failed, and how hard it is to make money, so you'll come away with more realistic expectations.Because learning that lesson by spending 5 grand to go to GDC is much cheaper than other ways.
