Can an Arab join the army in Israel?

Yes, Arabs are exempt from Israel’s compulsory army service (3 years for men, 2 for women), but can volunteer, and many do. In Israel, military service is still seen as a national ethos, which provides a measure of social acceptance, better chances at integration with Israeli society, and also economic benefits. As emphasized by Alex’ Leonidov’s comment below, many Communities in Israel are marginalized to varying extents due racist attitudes, such as Arabs, Jewish immigrants from Ethiopia, Russia and Ultra-Orthodox Jews.In addition, not serving in the army is still looked up negatively by the mainstream, not as much as in the past, but there is a lingering weight to it.Edit: As mentioned in the comment below, an alternative to military service, volunteers can elect to serve in the national service, supporting communities in various roles (working with the elderly or in hospitals, people with special needs, etc.) This service provides similar benefits to military service.Below: Hadeel, a Christian Israeli Arab, who volunteered for IDF military service and became an officer (she is interviewed, below).Muslim Bedouin soldiers in the IDF, serving as trackers.Israeli Bedouin Tracker: The Bedouins in the Region Envy Our Quality of LifeThe famous Sword Battalion used to be dedicated to the non-Jewish Druze community as well as Muslim and Christian volunteers, but in 2015, the battalion was disbanded, and its soldiers were dispersed in general infantry units of the IDF, after “research revealed the vast majority of recruits would rather integrate into the rest of the army.[9]”. The U.S. Marshals Service is the lead agency. It’s not clear how many federal officers are currently in Portland to help with protests. In addition to uniformed law enforcement, court records indicate plain-clothed federal agents have also been working the crowd. What can federal officers do that local police can’t?Unlike Portland police, which is subject to a court order limiting the use of tear gas, federal agents can use a variety of crowd control devices. What is it like to work as Assistant Section Officer (ASO) in the Central Secretariat Service (CSS)?

To begin with, Assistant in CSS has been re-designated as Assistant Section Officer (ASO). While Assistant in Ministry of Railways, External Affairs etc have still the same designation. An Assistant is placed in a Section, the section being the smallest unit in the Government of India with clearly defined mandate. The Section is headed by Section Officer and assisted by One or Two ASOs with other subordinate staff like Data Entry Operator, Multi Tasking Staff etc.I have worked for 8 months in CSS and based on my own experience and experience of my colleagues and senior CSS officers:1. The Job of a CSS officer (our designation officially carries the word 'officer' now :-P ) is primarily a desk job. The work is mainly file work - putting up a new matter (i.e. starting a new file), applying rules or any past precedence, drafting communication (i.e. official letters, parliamentary questions, office memorandums etc.) and coordinating with other sections.2. The job is easy as the task you are given is not generally with a deadline. So one can work at ease. The colleagues and seniors are very supportive, one is not expected to do something he doesn't know about and you get enough time to learn the job at hand.3. Life looks comfortable in this job as you would not be transferred out of the city ever in your life. Although if one intends to, he can go on deputation to some attached offices in other major cities. Government of India provides you various benefits: a health scheme (CGHS), travel concessions every year, gymnasiums are being set up in every building, there are libraries in all offices, and more recently a scheme to fund adventure sports (for the employees) has been started by the government. Facilities like Air Conditioned offices, canteens etc. are a taken for granted. Although in field offices of many other jobs, one may not find these.4. It feels good to work in the power center of our Great Nation. Everything here is done on an immense scale. You get to see (not meet) senior ministers on a daily basis. You can easily manage passes for Republic day parade, Beating ceremony and your Ministry specific events.5. However, although you get to serve in various Ministries by turn which have different nature of work responsibilities, the job is mainly sedentary. For someone who likes an 'on the move' job where you get to work in the field, this is not the job for you. Excise, Income Tax etc are more suited for you. As for the "boring" part, your job in any sector would stay the same for your life. An Income Tax Inspector would not get to work in the Police Department.Life is peaceful and interesting for those who want to work in the nerve center of the Government and who want a consistent lifestyle. You would get enough time to pursue your interests like playing a sport in the evening, reading etc. In the field jobs, you would have very less work on some days and huge burden on other days. I am told in ITI the work burden is particularly high during January to March (so you might have to work till late in the evening). So, decide on the basis of what you want in life. And I request all readers, please don't go for a job based on the notion of an extra income. Not only is it unethical and illegal, in this age of transparency there is no such thing. All those notions of Examiners earning huge sums are actually farce.Edit: Based on the comments:1. Don't expect any corruption in the job at all. This is precisely why life is easy. The Government pays you well, the 7th Pay Commission has recommended a consolidated salary of close to 59K.2. You don't generally deal with the public. Only some sections deal with non-office people, and that too not the general public. This is because CSS is a headquarter job.3. At the time of posting your preference for Ministry is asked so you generally get the desired place of posting.4. Getting a quarter takes a long time (4-5 years at least). There is a long seniority list.5. You can go on deputation in attached offices where there are vacancies. This is relatively easy because not many people prefer to go on deputation.6. You do get leaves when desired.EDIT: Please refer to comments, I have replied to a lot of questions, which would be of interest
