How can I get into a top university?

Play to the admissions committee. The University of California schools have been known to be relatively objective; UCSD used to publish a scoring rubric for a points-based system on their website.[1] When I applied in 2006, UC Berkeley was considered to have the most competitive and holistic admissions process of the 10 UC schools but it turns out that there was still method in the madness. I didn't discover it until the next spring after admissions results had already come out, but Berkeley professor Michael Hout had published a report on the review process.[2] It's the most comprehensive analysis of the process that I've ever read and pieces together what the committee is looking for.He created a set of scoring criteria starting from page 66 of the report: http://berkeley.edu/news/media/releases/2005/05/16_houtreport.pdf. From personal experience, I believe it is accurate not just for Berkeley but the other UC schools as well. It's worth looking over to see how to craft your application.Hout reveals that the committee assigns a "read score" on a fractional scale from 1 (the best) to 5 to each eligible applicant. The College of Engineering is significantly more competitive than the university average; 16% of engineering applicants scored between a 1 and 2 while about 10% of applicants to other colleges scored in the same range. Typically a read score of 3 or above is necessary for admission although in compelling circumstances the applicants with lower scores can get lucky.Hout built a statistical model to reverse engineer the read score. From the report one can draw the following conclusions:Academically excel amongst your peers.*Grades – scored as the percentile rank of the applicant in relation to other Berkeley applicants from the same school over the past three years – are the most important factor in read scores.Take AP and Honors courses for a high weighted GPA. An unweighted GPA does not help you.Applicants 14 and 15 both have unweighted GPAs of 3.54; their weighted GPAs are also 3.54 – indicating that they took no honors or AP courses. For that reason, eight of the 13 applicants with lower unweighted GPAs ranked above them. Indeed, Applicant 15 got the lowest read score among the eligible applicants from that high school.Do well on the SAT and score above 700 on each portion, especially if you want to be an engineer. Notice that the read scores more drastically decrease (i.e., improve) past the 700-point mark. Unfortunately there is no graph of the scores summed together.Engineering applications are read according to a slightly different formula. Grades and math scores predominate, as they do with applicants to other colleges. But verbal scores on the SAT-I carry significantly more weight in setting the read scores for Engineering applicants.Be active and contribute to the community.Activities – evaluated as major and minor, strong and light – affected scores(all else being equal) and so did contributions to community (and predictions about future contributions to Berkeley) and evidence of obstacles to achievement that appeared only in the personal statements.Once the admissions committee has assigned a read score, the choices are mostly straightforward; "For 89% of Berkeley’s applicants, the read score leads directly to a decision – admit or deny." There is an element of fairness as readers try to make consistent decisions within high schools.Berkeley admits applicants in batches defined by read scores. Fall regular admission is the preferred outcome for most applicants and those decisions are made first. L&S and Engineering applicants who are denied fall admission next compete for spring admission. Then lead readers review the outcomes school-by-school to ensure that applicants from the same school (and from the same family) are treated in a consistent manner. The report answers How do UC Berkeley undergraduate spring admits differ from fall admits in terms of test scores and other admission criteria? in terms of read scores.Choosing the borderline admits is the difficult part. The committee tries to give applicants a chance to explain their circumstances, and contacts them midway through the review process for an Augmented Review.Applicants who are getting an AR receive a detailed questionnaire that collects additional information about the student’s background, environment, and readiness for academic work at the level expected of Berkeley students. They are also asked to submit letters of recommendation. Most applicants who have disabilities are also referred to AR; they get a different questionnaire that focuses on their circumstances. Finally, there is a tie-breaking process. Hout, being a sociology professor, was looking to see if ethnicity affected admissions. He found that it did not except in referring applicants for AR or breaking ties.Since 2005 the admissions process has changed. The SAT Subject tests were de-emphasized for students applying for Fall 2012 and onward [3], probably to place more emphasis on societal contributions and to reduce biases from the financial burden of the tests. Still, the best way to maximize admissions chances is to have an all-star application as described in Josh Mitrani's answer.[1] http://andyxiu.wordpress.com/2010/09/07/ucsd-guide/[2] http://berkeley.edu/news/media/releases/2005/05/16_houtreport.pdf[3] http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/eligibilitychanges/faqs.html#whysat (Actually they are now not required but top campuses still "recommend" them.)*From personal observation this admits high school valedictorians who end up doing less than stellar in college. Applicants from competitive and well-performing high schools (e.g., What elementary and high schools get a kid into Berkeley?) tend to do well even if they weren't at the top of their classes.

Is anyone done an MSc. in psychology in Madras University Distance Education? Is attendance compulsory?

To answer the first question - Yes, I did my Masters in Psychology through IDE of Madras University. For the second one - One will have 10 theory classes per year and 50% attendance is mandatory in theory classes to be eligible to write the exams. Or else there will be a problem in getting your hall ticket generated. In the second year in addition to the theory classes, there will be classes for practicals which will be conducted on weekdays. Attendance on all 3days is mandatory. It will be a bit hectic and sort of fun also. It will be worth your time. Getting hands on in conducting questionnaires and such. The practical exam will be also on a weekday before which you will have complete your record for the exercises done and submit it on the day of the exam.Hope this addresses your query :)
