Like everyone else, I’d carry a little cash in one pocket and hand it over, understanding that bribes are a primary source of income for Police in Mexico. On to the original answer!A guy I worked with was married to a Mexican national, and he explained what he did. He was pulled over for running a red dot spray-painted on a telephone pole. He argued that it wasn't a stop sign, the cop said people steal the signs, so they use red dots instead. After the cop threatened to take him to jail, he asked for his name and badge number, got it, and started dialing.Much to his surprise, my obviously American friend started speaking perfect Spanish and asked the person to connect him to someone with a familiar-sounding Spanish name. The cop started getting nervous and demanded to know who he was talking to. He asked for a minute, explained he’d been pulled over by Officer so and so in TJ for driving past a red dot on a pole, then handed the cop the phone.Within a few seconds, he realized who was at the other end of the call: the head of the Mexican equivalent of the IRS…and my co-worker’s father-in-law.Profound apologies were given by a very frightened cop before he drove away, unticketed. He always told me to ask for a ticket, and if they threaten to take you to jail for the red dot on the pole, tell them, “Let’s go!” It’s a bluff to extract a bribe.
