We gave a voluntary donation of £120 to the wonderful Merseyside Dogs Trust[1] , from where we adopted him as his third owner. We have had him now for 14 months. He still has issues, but we love him. After careful negotiations, we took him on just a year ago. He now has lost half his body weight, can run (he couldn’t before), has no joint problems (he would cry whenever he moved before we rescued him) and has a coat in lovely condition. He thinks we are starving him, but he is a great companion and so friendly.I hope this was not TLDR. Honestly, there are dogs out there longing for a forever home. There are dogs out there that face euthanasia if they are not adopted.Yes, pedigree puppies are expensive. So why not do something… wonderful?By adopting a dog from a rescue centre or pound, you are giving a dog a forever home. And if you adopt from a no-kill centre, you are saving two dogs: the dog you adopt, and the dog that the centre is able to take on using the vacancy you have created.Can you imagine how happy the dog you adopt would be in your loving home? And can you imagine the joy your new companion might bring you — especially as you know you have done something… wonderful?If you are still with me, just a note on Dogs Trust UK. You can visit any of their centres, look at and interact with the dogs (as appropriate: some are so damaged that this is not allowed.)If you decide that you would like to adopt a dog, there is a vetting process — quite rightly — for you as a potential owner. You will be observed interacting with the dog, have an interview and be asked to fill in a questionnaire. You will probably have a home visit to check your situation suits the prospective adoptee.If you are accepted, then the centre will offer you free training — for life. Any pre-existing conditions your dog has will be covered by their “shared adoption” insurance scheme. And you will have a number of follow up contacts just to check things are going OK.I said they were wonderful…BTW, they also have dogs that, because of issues or past experience, are not eligible for adoption. The Dogs Trust will keep them in happy and interactive surrounding for life. Instead, you can do a “virtual adoption”, with a small amount a month that goes to the Dogs Trust charity, and you receive updates on your dog, and even a Christmas card. DISCLOSURE: I do not now, nor have I ever had a CCW.There are a few interrelated factors to the continuing expansion of CCW permits:BECAUSE THEY CAN: Back in 1988, only 10 states had shall-issue CCW laws. Today it is 42 (if you include the few states that have dropped permitting altogether). As with any new opportunity, there are early adopters, majority-phase adopters and laggards. Hence, even states like Florida (passed shall-issue CCW in 1988) have new adopters every day from the pre-existing population.PREPAREDNESS: I have no hard numbers (yet) but I suspect the majority of people who get a CCW do not actively carry. Having a CCW is like having a torque wrench — you don’t use it often, but you want it around just in case. So some people just “eventually get around to it.”BELIEF CONVERSION: The history of national CCW expansion was a case study in belief conversion. There was a lag after Florida passed shall-issue CCW and before the next state did. The country was watching a rather big experiment in the making. When mayhem and bloodshed did not occur in Florida, other states said “Well, why the heck not?” and enacted their own CCW laws. People are similar. When a state passes CCW laws, a lot of folks — even gun owners — says “Why would I want a CCW? That’s just dangerous.” But after a few years pass, and they meet numerous people with CCWs, the fear abates and they decide to get one as well (see “laggards” in the chart above).One bit of polite pushback. The questionnaire believes that Americans are arming themselves at “unprecedented levels”. However, between the colonial and the mid 20th century, people were very commonly armed and commonly carried in public, including this old gal. America went through a spasm of gun control adoration between 1969 and 1990, then reversed course back toward how it was before.

Now, if the attorney knows the special procedures - which Randy does - adoptions can be finalized WITHOUT a court appearance by the adopting parent(s) and adoptee, and the process is usually completed in 1-2 months, start-to-finish.Adoption isn't just for children. Actually, adult adoption (adopting a person aged 18 or over) is quite common. But many people still wonder, "Can I adopt an adult?"Adopting an adult person creates a parent and child relationship, and legally terminates the parental relationship of the parent who is being displaced. After adoption, the same benefits and responsibilities exist as if the adoptee was born to the adopting parent.ADULT STEP PARENT ADOPTION IS THE MOST COMMON TYPE OF ADULT ADOPTION.Most adult adoptions are by a step parent. Often they did not do the adoption when the adoptee was a child due to the fact the absent parent would not consent. An adult adoption does not require the absent parent's consent, however. Also, if desired, an adult adoption even gives you the chance to do a free name change (such as the adoptee taking the last name of the adopting parent). But not every adult adoption is a step parent adoption, as where the adoptee has formed a strong relationship with replacement parenting figures, whether a couple, or a single woman or man.DOES LOS ANGELES COUNTY REQUIRE A HOME STUDY OR INVESTIGATION?No. Because there are no children involved, there is no legal requirement for a home study or investigation in adult adoptions. This saves time and money. Without the requirement of a home study or investigation, most of Randy's clients are are able to finalize their adoption without ever having to go to court, and take only one-two months of starting the process.WHAT PAPERWORK IS REQUIRED WHEN ADOPTING AN ADULT IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY?The only negative thing when you adopt an adult is it actually involves more legal paperwork than some other types of adoption. The Los Angeles Superior Court does not have pre-printed forms for adult adoption as exists for the adoption of a minor, as the laws and procedures are completely different. This mean that each document must be custom drafted, outside the realm of most non-attorneys. Randy's job is to do all those forms, so all you have to do is sign them. There are usually 7-10 documents to be prepared and filed, including the Adult Petition for Adoption (to see a sample click here), the Adult Adoption Agreement, the Spousal Consent to Adult Adoption (if the adoptive parent or adoptee is married), the Order of Adoption, and the VS-44 (to create the amended birth certificate if desired). All this is done for the flat legal fee of $1,500. In the rare cases where the adoptee wants to be adopted and also have their existing parents keep their parental rights (so the adoptee could have three or four legal parents) this is now possible effective January 1, 2020 due to a new law Randy co-authored.
