PDF Editor FAQ

As a concealed gun carrier, why do you feel the need to always carry a gun? Is your country so dangerous that you don’t feel safe without carrying a weapon?

Let me field the second question.I have ridden bicycles cross country on the shoulders of highways where I was flanked all day long by semi-trucks rushing by, any one of which could have swerved and killed me, as could any other random driver. I sometimes rode alone on long stretches where few others were around and I could easily be accosted. I have hitchhiked cross country and in some very dangerous areas. As a hitchhiker, I have been guest in the front seat of what I highly suspected was a rape van, maybe a murder van, where the driver offered me a sip from an open beverage. I have slept on the ground, out of doors, as a voluntarily homeless young person, in an encampment that was later reported to be a dumpsite for a mass murderer. So there you have it. I am not afraid to engage in dangerous activities. I didn’t pick up a gun just because I might get attacked. And I have strategies for unarmed response to attacks.I was unarmed on those trips. I considered the need for firearms if riding in grizzly bear country, but never rode far enough into bear country to warrant the weight of a bear-sized handgun. It’s not that my country is not safe. The world is not safe. Life is not safe. I know that whether I have a weapon or not. Bad things happen to good people. Victims might think they are perfectly safe until the moment of an attack when they get robbed, raped and murdered.Okay, this next part gets gorey. Consider yourself warned.A personal firearm, with requisite training (whether required by law or not), is part tool and part talisman. (No, not a phallus. A talisman.) To the responsible members of the concealed carry community, it means they will (most likely) respond with more force than that with which they are attacked, if attacked. There’s more. It means “I will avoid all confrontations that I can otherwise escape.” To responsible weapons handlers, stand your ground does not mean I will sling an AR over my shoulder, shout “Your team sucks” where another team has homefield advantage, then stand my ground against all challengers. No way. It means I will avoid all violent confrontations because if it gets violent, I plan to prevail. If I cannot legally and morally prevail, I should not be in the conflict. That rules out 95 percent of conflicts less responsible adults might otherwise engage: the chestpounding shoving matches about a lady’s honor, the frenzied rush of a crazed homeless person, a beligerant drunk who could easily be allowed to fall on his own face and even the self-aggrandizing predatory behavior of a young gang tough showing his stuff to peers. How do I avoid the gangbangers? I cross the street. I avoid that neighorhood. I take the long way home. Whatever it takes. A defensive capacity is not a license to invade or even a license to frivolously excercise lawful rights that might be unlawfully impaired. It is a last resort option for personal and family safety. It might be a tool to help someone else in need - even a police officer if I had the unfortunate experience, as a very few people have, of encountering an officer engaged in the losing end of a violent struggle. It is also a reminder not to rush in to those situations, even if I think i have a weapon at hand. It is a reminder that violence can result in permanent consequences and should be avoided. Now, one might ask, cannot a person avoid violence without carrying a constant reminder? Sure. That’s how I learned it. As a matter of fact, other than that I am answering a question targeting concealed carry advocates, no one has a reason to believe I would carry a weapon. But bear in mind, while Joe Ego Sport Fight is studying Brazillian Jujitsu, I am contemplating in which circumstances I will push my finger deep into the eye socket of another human. I am contemplating when it is appropriate and how hard I must strike to break someone’s hyoid bone. I am fingering the pen in my pocket thinking how it could be driven into an eye, throat, ear drum or other soft-tissue pain point. I don’t read books about how to fight. I read books about how to injure and kill. I have no intention of doing it unless required to save my life, protect myself from great bodily harm, or do the same for another in limited circumstances. Those books remind me of the legal consequences of violence, and the human experience with violence. I remind myself I am not a crime fighter or a defender of anyone’s reputation. Those skills are defensive skills. They are for the small fraction of potentially violent incidents in which I might be involved that cannot be escaped, deescalated, avoided or resolved by law enforcement.Defensive weapons and skills for violent defensive action often reflect a recognition that violent incidents are not an indicator of how unsafe “the world” or “my country” might be. They are an indicator of how unsafe a moment might be, how suddenly a violent moment can unfold and how, even if I avoid 95 percent of all violence, the remainder choses its candidates at random. Bad things happen to good people. Good people sometimes have no choice in whether bad things will happen, but we can choose how we prepare to respond. Pray for your attacker if you want to. You can pray and defend yourself at the same time, though.

What should a pregnant woman do if her water breaks and contractions don't start?

This happened to me. It even has a fancy acronym PROM, Premature Rupture of Membranes.Assuming that you are at or near full term, this isn't a medical emergency, just a not uncommon complication of labor.Step 1: Check the fluid. Is it clear? How does it smell? If it has a fairly neutral odor, you are okay. If it smells like pee, then you have probably just peed yourself. (Which definitely happens to a lot of people toward the end of pregnancy. Nothing to be ashamed of.) If it's green or brownish, you may have meconium (a.k.a. baby poop) in there. Again, not generally a huge emergency, but something to tell your doctor about.Step 2: Dress for success! Your body will continue to make more amniotic fluid, so you are likely to be leaking for quite awhile. If you are going to drive somewhere, like the hospital, you'll probably want a really good pad, some disposable underwear, etc. Also maybe find a towel you don't love so much to put on your seat.Step 3: Call your doctor or midwife. Let them know your water broke and at what time. If you are planning a delivery at a hospital or birthing center, there's a good chance they will want you to head there.Step 4: When you get to your birthing place, meet with your medical team and discuss your options. If you aren't having contractions at all, even after a few hours, there's a good chance that your team will want to stimulate your labor, possibly using a drug like pitocin. This is because once your water breaks, you are your baby are at a higher risk of infection. You should talk it through with your team and decide what you want to do.For a long time, many places had a "24 hour rule" that said you had to have the baby within 24 hours of your water breaking, to reduce the risk of stillbirth. However, this rule was based on old research from the 50s and 60s. New research indicates it's probably okay to wait longer. You can read a good summary of the relevant research here: Evidence on: Induction when your Water Breaks at Term.In my case, I had group B strep (which increased my risk of infection), so I chose to go ahead with induction. I delivered about 12 hours later. The pitocin contractions where quite intense, though, and I definitely appreciated my epidural.

What are the top do's and don'ts that a new project manager should remember?

1. Take a minute to understand the difference between “command” and “lead”“You “Protect” the project team, they do the rest.”– Onur KarabulutThe kind of leadership style you chose will decide whether or not you are leading people and project to success.Command and lead are two simple words that can create a lot of confusion in this case. Many new project managers fail to understand the difference between “leading a team” and “commanding a team”, as a result, things don’t work as they expect. Remember, as a project manager, your job is to lead the way to success – not giving orders.2. Stop pretending that you know EVERYTHING“You don’t have to know everything about everything — it’s ok to ask questions and learn from each experience.”– Ann Lynne DodsonWhy? Because then you won’t be able to learn anything. As a project manager, you want to seem competent. And that’s fair. But it doesn’t mean that you have to pretend to know everything or that you can’t ask questions about something new from your fellow employees. In simple words, the world won’t end if you didn’t know something.3. Make excellent communication your #1 priority“Precision of communication is important, more important than ever, in our era of hair-trigger balances, when a false or misunderstood word may create as much disaster as a sudden thoughtless act.”– James ThurberThe power of good communication in the workplace is known to all.In fact, good communication is one of the major factors that differentiate a poor leadership from the exceptional one. Having a strong communication system in the workplace means good performance and good leadership. When you create clear communication within teams and departments, you encourage a peaceful and productive work environment where work gets done quickly and professionally.4. Always be the person who keeps everyone organized and focused“Always keep a track record of the work being done.”– Pietro CecereYou’ll have a lot on your plate as a new project manager. Accept that. From keeping multiple projects on track, tracking every individual’s performance, giving clients and stakeholders timely updates, to ensuring successful delivery of every project, you’ll be in complete control of a lot of things at work. This is where staying organized and focused becomes necessary for you.Explore ways to keep your projects, files, teams, clients, project communications, etc organized and focus on what matters to you most at the moment. Don’t waste time – recognize your priorities, keep them organized and stay productive.5. Use technology to optimize performance and avoid burnout“44% of project managers use no software, even though PWC found that the use of commercially available project management software increases performance and satisfaction.”– Price Waterhouse CoopersTechnology can be a great help in managing workload and helping teams achieve more productivity without any burnout or stress. From free applications to a subscription based project management software solution, there are plenty of options available to you when you’re looking for ways to fill the productivity gaps in your everyday work life.Just make sure that you pick the kind of software or tool that directly meets your needs and makes you more productive.6. Beware of the role creep“Your ultimate role is always to deliver what is in the WBS (Work Breakdown Structure) and project plan, use a designated process for scope change, risk monitoring, and issue management, and maintain good communication.”– Michael Ayres MSFirst, what is role creep?Role creep is a common workplace ailment during which the project manager keeps assigning additional responsibilities and employees tend to accept them without any questions. This practice results in confusion and highly unwieldy job descriptions. As a project manager, it is important that you create a work environment where both you and your employees explore innovative ways to accomplish the desired goals within the regular work principles and hours.7. Make time your best friend“It’s not enough to be busy; so are the ants. The question is: what are we busy about?”– Henry David ThoreauAs a project manager, your schedule is going to be pretty tight. That’s why it is important that you keep clear track of where and how your work hours are being used across various projects and teams. Plus, you need to encourage your teams to do the same. Find a reliable time tracking or time management software and inject it into your daily work process so that you can use every minute at work efficiently.8. Be clear about the project objectives, assets, & risks – and communicate the same to your teams and clients“Understand the project — so the planning, objectives, results that the project wants to achieve, and of course know the monitoring plan: what are the indicators, its tools, etc.”– Marta AceroNever start a project without knowing it inside out.We know you want to finish big projects fast so that you can make a strong first impression as a new project manager. But this approach won’t work in the long run. You as well as your team needs to have a clear understanding about the objectives, assets, associated risks, etc in order to finish a project without sacrificing the quality of the work.Always get to the finish line with a result that makes you feel proud.9. Manage expectations along the way via 1-on-1 project feedback sessions“Manage the stakeholders’ expectations within given limits. That would encompass all the necessary requirements such as deliverables, scope, etc.”– John MpunguBeing a new project manager is not just about managing a new team or a new project, it’s about living up to the expectations of the new clients as well. How? Well, you’ll have to start communicating like crazy. Let your clients and stakeholders know exactly what’s happening in their projects. Additionally, allow them to share their feedback and suggestions directly with you and your team via a reliable review and approval process.10. Never fear from the failure“Don’t be afraid of mistakes — learn from them. They are the building blocks for future success in this challenging and dynamic profession!”– Susan KirkpatrickFailure is a part of the success.Everyone has failed and they will fail again at some point in their life. All that matters is what you learn and how you plan to become better prepared for similar situations in the future. Don’t get overwhelmed. Don’t resist yourself from doing something new.
