What are some of New Zealand's best kept secrets? Is it a small village, a secret garden, or a wonderful restaurant?

I kind of assume that most people haven't really even heard of New Zealand, so I thought to just list some info about us, in the hope that some people might learn some secrets about us.The peopleWe are very humble, very practical and down to earth. We also have a deep desire for visitors to love our country, so will look out for you if you visit.(Above is a Hongi, where Maori greeting press noses as a way of greeting). This while a Beer ad, kind of gives a flavor of our country, and irreverrent and self depricating humor (Flight of the Concords is a good example of Kiwi humor).Scenery VarietyThere is a heck of a lot of different scenery in very tight areas (Coastline, Bush, Woods, Tussock, Desert (not really), Mountain ranges etc.Jafa divideJust another F**ing Aucklander is a common attitude from outside Auckland.Auckland is about 1.5M of the 4M NZers are seen to be far too arrogant and rich and pretentious by the even more down to earth rest of the country. Truth is, we are still pretty down to earth, but far less than the rest of NZ.(This view is actually incorrect as well, and I certainly don't believe the overseas is up ya self). This is a pic of me, and I am squarely one of these bloody yuppy arrogant pricks, though compared to most other countries, I am very down to earth, and humble and not up myself at all.We are possibly closest to Canada in personality, a bit close to England (but with no class structure), and a bit like Australia, but far more reserved and self deprecating.RugbyIt's in our blood, we love it, and it's pretty rare to find a kiwi who can't name all the All Blacks, and it is reasonable to already know the new caps from watching the under 21, 7s, Super 15 and Club rugby.HakaWe do a Haka at the start of the rugby, and a similar thing (a powhiri) to welcome people onto a Marae (Maori village). This is a tough challenge, and once this has been expressed, then people are welcomed.OE (Overseas Experience)We are very aware that we are a very small country, we don't think a lot of ourselves and are pleased as punch when someone actually knows where NZ is!A big part of teenage coming of age is an "OE" or "Overseas Experience", and most kiwis spend a year or 5 in London, America or other countries. This tends to give us a pretty open view of the world.Nuclear freeThe whole country is Nuclear free (no nuclear weapons or power).Springbok protests divided the countryI can remember protesting against Apartheid at (I assume) only 5 years old.I remember being very proud of mum explaining about what it was and inviting me to join her protest. Felt very grown up.Treaty claimsWe as a country are quite unique in that the British actually signed a contract with the Maori tribes rather than in America and Australia where the indigenous people were just simply conquered. Also unique to NZ is that we are actually paying grievances for land claims. My proudest moments as a NZer1) Lange telling the world, that they weren't welcome in NZ with Nuclear ships2) First country in the world to give women the vote3) Massive anti Apartheid protests (not all for it)4) 2011 RWC winAnd the Haka against France!

Postmates is refusing to pay our restaurant up to 500+ dollars that they owe us, and tell customers that we are “too busy” or just plain closed when we ask them for payment in advance. Can we go to small claims?

Postmates, like other ‘on-demand’, ‘sharing economy or ‘gig’ economy businesses depend on a very fraudulent system of customer, driver and storefront provider contracting terms. This is done in order to limit accountability, liability and incidental costs on the part of the app provider (in this case Postmates) in order to save costs while dumping liability on the customer, driver, storefront and the general public. The Postmates TOS clearly states:“These Terms provide that with limited exceptions covered by Section 17.3 of these Terms all disputes between you and Postmates arising out of or relating to these Terms or your use of the PLATFORM (the “Disputes”) will be resolved by BINDING ARBITRATION. For such Disputes, YOU waive YOUR RIGHT TO bring a class or representative action, or GO TO COURT under these Terms.”This term eliminates your right to file small claims and will invalidate your claims in court. **Note that this is the VERY FIRST term of the agreement and it is written on BOLD on the agreement.“You understand that the prices for product or menu items displayed through the Platform may differ from the prices offered or published by Merchants for the same product or menu items and/or from prices available at other third-party websites/mobile applications. Prices for product or menu items displayed through the Platform may not be the lowest prices at which the product or menu items are sold.”This term and others in the same document eliminates your right to conflicts in the presentation of your business by Postmates.“Where your cart includes product or menu items for which Postmates does not know the exact price to be charged by the Merchant, Postmates may designate an estimated subtotal for such product and menu items (the “Estimated Subtotal”). “This term grants Postmates the right to misrepresent pricing.“Postmates has no obligation to itemize its costs, profits or margins when publishing prices on the Platform and reserves the right to change such prices at any time, at its discretion.”This is a very blanketed term which eliminates your right to dispute changes in pricing.“During use of the Platform, you may purchase goods and services from third-party Merchants through the Platform. Any such activity, and any interactions, disputes, terms, conditions, warranties or representations associated with that activity, is solely between you and the applicable third-party Merchant. Postmates and its licensors shall have no liability, obligation or responsibility for any purchase or transaction between you and any third-party provider. In no event shall Postmates or its licensors be responsible for any content, products, services or other materials on or available from third-party sites or third-party providers. Certain third-party providers of goods and/or services may require your agreement to additional or different terms and conditions prior to your use of or access to such goods or services, and Postmates disclaims any and all responsibility or liability arising from such agreements between you and a third party.”This term and others in the same document removes Postmates from any liability, INCLUDING INSURANCE for your business and any driver working for Postmates who may commit a crime, rob a customer, foul or rob the product being delivered for your business or cause an accident while driving.Sections 11 and 12 of the agreement eliminate and waive even more liability on the part of postmates.Section 13. Limitation of LiabilityWhich is printed in ALL CAPS contains virtually the same liability waiver that Uber and Lyft use, indicating clearly that there is ABSOLUTELY NO accountability with postmates for any representation, safely, insurance, liability oe otherwise involvement with you, your customers, your products and clients or representation of the same. The Postmates TOS: TermsIt is important to READ TOS agreements before becoming involved wit so-called “sharing economy” businesses. There are factors of these agreements that ARE fraudulent in nature and in some instances such as defamation, injury, death or assault you can openly sue in court without submitting to the arbitration clause and other waivers you have agreed to.Misrepresentation of your business in the manner described does show signs of defamation. You should contact a lawyer. Our lawyer does do personal injury in these instances and would be able to advise you properly and find you proper representation in your own state.Legal Aid - Ride Safe

Why is English the only Latin alphabet language that doesn't use accent marks over its letters?

I know that Dutch also does not use accents. It is the archaic spelling of English that gives us the answer, when we analyse the same word in German and English, or French and English. The French word “forest” is DEBASED in modern French, where the accent shows where “s” used to be. Forest in French now has a silent s (and a silent t if the next sound is not a vowel), although with the word for “forester” you still hear the s.The German word “mueller” (miller) also gets an accent to show where the “e” used to be.And this is very often what the accent is - a way of telling the reader how the word “spelt the same as before” - i.e. in the older language is now pronounced differently. What the “dictionary makers” of the English language (e.g. Oxford and Websters) tried to do, when they tried to standardise the spelling, was to avoid the need for accents by trying to reserve certain vowel combinations for certain sounds. And even here there will still be problems. In English, the name of the French car maker would be pronounced CITRONE - the rule that is being followed here as you read this is that it is a LONG “o” because there is an “e” after the “n”.Except that as English is sort of halfway between French and German we would not pronounce it the “German” way, as if there was an umlaut over the “o”, because we would already have a clue that the OE was a dipthong and not just a “long o”.So this is both the primary weakness of English and the primary strength.English does not use accents or gender, and even when we have “contraction”, “possessive” or “plural” marks, just as in the German umlaut and eszet (the “double s”), they do not replace the original words. In other words, we can say is not it, as well as isn’t it. Just like a German can still write mueller or strasse. And most of the time we can tell how to pronounce a word with vowels in it, by the “rules” we are familiar with.Man having the short a sound.Mane having the long a sound.Maen being the Welsh word for “stone” - and prounounced as a dipthong. But English also does not use “gender”.Therefore English is the natural inheritor of Latin as the “lingua franca” of the Latin alphabet world, even though like most natural languages there are still many “irregular verb forms” and archaic spelling. It is in fact the inconsistency of the spelling that means that your dictionary, whether it is the British “Oxford” authority or the American “Webster” authority, will have established “rules” for pronouncing the “pronunciation guide”.I remember reading the Lord of the Rings, and in the Appendix I found that Tolkein was telling me that I was pronouncing the name of “Sauron” incorrectly.“Sau” the way a “German” would pronounce it, not like “sau” in sausage. But then we need to realise that Tolkein was an expert in “Old English” - which is basically a type of “German”. He has to tell us how to pronounce the words in “English” spelling by using examples, and hoping that we all speak basically the same version of English as he does. And I did not. I had - and still have - a “Canadian” accent. So this would suggest that accents make sense, because they tell you how to pronounce the vowels according to consistent rules being applied, that you do not get just by saying - for example - that OE is a dipthong and EO is a long o.No they do not. When you use the S-Bahn (overground railway) in Berlin, the conductor announces the stop and the trains you can change to.The German word for “two” is zwei, which does have “rules” for pronouncing it that can be learned. The Z is really more like an S that sort of starts with a T.The W is a V.The EI is supposed to be pronounced like the “i” sound in HIGH.So 2 = TSVIGH. And you would expect that in Berlin the S2 train is ESS TSVIGH.No. It is ESS TSVOEH.Whereas in another part of Germany - like Hamburg - it might be ESS TSVOO - which may suggest the link to TWO - the “Saxons” gradually dropping the S from the TS after they settled in the UK.And this shows you what the problem is. Languages evolve all the time. And that means that it is probably better to:just read the 2000 year old Latin words and pronounce them the way you would in your own languagebut try to set rules for your language so that when you pronounce your words the spelling is one that a Latin from 2000 years ago would useAnd always remember that languages evolve, so we need to keep the rules simple. If KNIGHT is not obvious, then spell it NITE, and if you want a dipthong, add a W, H, or Y to the end.
