Summer Reading Assignment For English 1 Honors: Fill & Download for Free

Yes, the classes will have different books assigned. Teachers have different expectations of grammar, composition, especially analysis.Honors classes assign summer reading and summer homework plus a paper due the first day of school. On level classes don’t require this.Honors students are penalized for using online resources, to the point that you can fail the class if you do so.For example, my daughter is taking pre-AP English II. She read Lord of the Flies for summer reading and will read To Kill a Mockingbird next. The on level English II class will read Animal Farm.Interestingly, all these books seem to have movies you can watch.I took honors AP English and my twin took on level English. While I read Tom Jones, she read Joseph Andrews. I read The Brothers Karamazov, she read Crime and Punishment. I read The Sound and Fury, she read “A Rose for Emily.” I read A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, she read “Dubliners.”In short, my books were longer and more textually difficult. For example, The Sound and the Fury is non-linear, has different narrators who are not well-identified (including a mentally handicapped narrator), has unreliable narration, is written in stream of consciousness. Karamazov is long, dense, has weird foreign names and customs, hundreds of characters, and each character has about four names, depending on who is being addressed.Today, I bet few high schools or colleges assign the books my sister and I read.

I'm not an incoming freshman (rising senior actually) but this question hits me right in the feels.The school I went to freshman year actually ran on an A-B schedule, with 4 90-minute classes meeting each days. As you can probably imagine, many of these classes would end up becoming mind numbingly boring, especially when a teacher beat a topic to death for the sake of class taking up the entire 90-minutes, resulting in many games being played on my school-issued iPad. Let me assure you, the 60-minute classes at my current school are so much better than what I had to go through freshman and sophomore year.Anyway, here is the lowdown:1A) English II Honors: I got by far the most homework in this class. I would be up till 1 in the morning - pretty much commonplace for me junior year, but this was tough for somebody who was used to booking it at 9:30 - reading and analyzing works like Othello, Oedipus Rex, and A Tale of Two Cities. I think this class was also my lowest grade freshman year as well. Regardless, I had a really good teacher, so that balanced things out.2A) AP Human Geography: Fun times! I had a teacher who was easy and taught well, so the exam ended up being an easy 5. Plus, especially considering I went to a school with 2000+ students, my class somehow ended up with only 15 people. An added bonus, I found out I was interested in global studies after this class, as well.3A) Spanish II: The class was so easy I’m pretty sure I lost brain cells. The only reason I ended up with a 99 and not a 100 was because my friend and I played Clash of Clans and Boom Beach on our aforementioned iPads in the back of the class all block.4A) Orchestra: This was a nice decompresser. We played some play cool songs (along with some terrible ones - looking at you Soon Hee Newbold #onlyorchestrastudentscanrelate). Plus I also had a bomb ass teacher who was really into Star Trek.5B) Algebra II Honors: Once again, another easy class with an awesome teacher. Nothing is better than a teacher that had a “joke of the day” on his board that was the following, Lenny face included:Hey, can you smell this chloroform for me? >:)6B) Biology Honors: This class was legit hard as balls and dissuaded me from taking AP Biology sophomore year (which is something I regret because it’s required at my current school anyway!). Let me just say that my teacher tried cramming the entire AP Bio curriculum in an honors class for some reason, and our grades showed it. Even to this day, every time I hear the words “electron transport chain” in that order I get chills through my spine. Also, I'm pretty sure my teacher docked a point off my final grade because I told her she had been pronouncing my name wrong the entire year on the last day of school for giggles.7B) Physical Science Honors: Your run-of-the-mill freshman science class. Aced every test no problem, and was probed about what it was like to be Indian by my teacher (she was one of those people haha).8B) Introduction to Engineering Design: Why was this class even dual enrollment??? This class was way easier than anything I had taken in middle school and ended up being a nice GPA booster too, though I really wish I had taken Java 1 Honors, my school’s required (no flexibility) prerequisite to AP Computer Science instead.Online PE: Took it first semester, and ended up with a 99 because I did all the assignments 30 minutes before they were due. It was the reason why I barely missed out on top 10 ranking at the end of first semester :((( (still ended up valedictorian at the end of sophomore year so joke’s on you, VirtualSC!).What a nice trip down memory lane. Now I can go back to stressing out about college apps and summer reading!

For context, I am a freshman at a public school. I love math and science. I took zero period art this semester because my mom didn’t think marching band counted as a class.Art 1: A+ - The teacher was awful. Most kids did badly because she barely taught anything. She would mark points off of assignments for things she never taught, and for “not meeting requirements” that she didn’t mention until right before the assignment was due. Surprisingly, she seemed to like me because I’m fairly good at art.NAF Engineering 1: A+ - A fun and interesting class, and an easy A. So far we built and tested balsa wood bridges, experimented with 3D modeling and designed solar powered solar rover prototypes, and some other stuff. There weren’t many tests, and you could access notes during all of them.Precalculus: A+ - This was a challenging course, but I enjoyed it - it was made harder by the fact I’m the only freshman in the class. I somehow ended up with an A+. The teacher had me tutor a few other students on several occasions. Many students struggled because there wasn’t much review - succeeding in the course requires that you remember everything from previous years. I didn’t get to an A+ till the end of the semester.Concert Band: A+ - It’s an easy A or B if you turn in practice records and do well on performance exams. The band director is awful though.Honors Biology 9: A+ - My bio teacher was AMAZING! She is very energetic and good at keeping students engaged and learning. The tests were very straightforward and easy to pass if you paid attention in class. I’ve heard that this class used to be harder but they dumbed down some of the material because kids were struggling. I think I had the highest percentage grade in the class; a boy I know was very close behind.Honors English 9: A+ - A fairly easy class with a challenging final - the short answer questions were very difficult. The teacher is very sweet. We had weekly vocabulary quizzes on 6–7 terms from whatever we were reading, plus some roots and affixes. The quizzes were cumulative, meaning that any terms from that semester were fair game, but the quiz never went longer than the front of a page.Marching Band: A+ - Literally all your grade is based on is attendance. There’s a point system for when you’re late or absent (even excused), and to earn back points you need to do a makeup assignment. The rehearsals were exhausting but the competitions and football games were awesome.Marching band was my PE credit last semester. This semester I’ll have to take zero period PE, and I’m not athletic. The only thing I’m good at is roll-stepping (marching band) which isn’t much help in PE.By the way, I took Health and Careers over the summer so I didn’t have to take it this year.My school does not offer any freshman AP courses, and the only AP course you’re really allowed to take sophomore year is Euro. I’ll be doing Calc next year though. It’s annoying how they don’t give the option for many APs.Thanks guys!-MR
