PDF Editor FAQ

Is the NRA-funded Crime Prevention Research Center wrong when they claim DACA-age immigrants commit crime at twice the rate of their native peers?

It’s entirely, wholeheartedly, and intentionally misleading. Not wrong, but they a) went into the study incorrectly, b) came up with a misleading conclusion, c) used misleading data to support their misleading conclusions.Let’s take a look at their data first, concentrating at what they were looking at.They basically conclude that the demographic that constitutes DACA participants (in their eyes, undocumented immigrants, ages 20–35) are more dangerous than legal immigrants. There’s even a quote in the linked article:If undocumented immigrants committed crime nationally as they do in Arizona, in 2016 they would have been responsible for over 1,000 more murders, 5,200 rapes, 8,900 robberies, 25,300 aggravated assaults, and 26,900 burglariesThe first thing we need to clear up is the definition of a DACA participant. It’s not as simple as what was given by the study authors. Here are a few tidbits they left out:You entered the United States prior to your 16th birthday; You have resided in the United States since June 15, 2007 and currently are present in the U.S.;You entered the United States without border inspection before June 15, 2012, or your immigration status expired prior to June 15, 2012;You must be currently in school, have graduated, or obtained an equivalent certificate of completion from high school, successfully obtained a general education development (GED) certificate, or must have been honorably discharged from the Armed Forces of the United States; andYou must not have been convicted of a felony, significant misdemeanor, three or more other misdemeanors, and must not pose a threat to national security or public safety.Okay, that narrows down their field SIGNIFICANTLY.One of the items I did take a look at was the data used to create this report (found here: Undocumented Immigrants, U.S. Citizens, and Convicted Criminals in Arizona). And lo and behold, you begin to see that what they consider to be DACA participants…isn’t even close. In Table 2, they clearly show the crimes that these folks committed, things like:Smuggling…which indicates a drug mule, not a DACA participant, and not even an illegal alien/undocumented immigrant…these are folks bringing drugs into our country, then going back to get more drugs…it’s in their job descriptions“Unlawful copying or sale of sounds or images from recording devices”…that’s right, they’re selling pirated CDs of Despacito…I feel like my life is in danger“Tampering w/ a public record”…yeah, they have fake IDs…also not a DACA“Criminal impersonation”…yeah, they have fake IDs…also not a DACAMany of the crimes listed fall into one of two categories:Crimes involved in illegally entering the US, such as fake IDs and illegally entering the USCrimes that are related entirely with the drug trade, and thus, not a part of DACA participantsI’ll also point out that there are some extremely questionable items here that make it pretty clear that the compilation of this data is at least suspect. One of the categories is “DWI License Suspend-Revoke”; this is obviously a very specific item, indicating that the driver received a DWI AFTER having a license suspended or revoked; in Arizona, if you’re not legally allowed to be here, you can’t get a drivers license. And yet, we see that undocumented immigrants, ages 20–35, somehow make up 10.1% of all prisoners that committed this crime. And, just so we’re absolutely, 100%, crystal clear on this…there is no analysis whatsoever that any of these prisoners were a part of, or even eligible for, the DACA program. That would seem to have been an important item.Basically, I’m going to declare that their dataset just isn’t valid. They aren’t sharing their base “source” data, so I can’t see how they reached this conclusion, but it’s pretty clear that they aren’t looking at DACA participants, and they weren’t even truly looking at the population they say they’re looking at.Now that we have that out of the way, it’s pretty easy to see that their conclusion is just not valid.Let’s do a little equivalency test to see if this holds up:The Boy Scouts of America is an organization of males ages 7–17 (I know, there’s a bunch of other groups, just work with me here). If we were to look at juvenile crime in the United States, about 70% of all juvenile crime is committed by males ages 7–17.Therefore, we could reach the same sort of conclusion: the majority of juvenile crime is committed by Boy Scout eligible kids. When I put it that way…it sounds really, really damn stupid, doesn’t it?Finally, how did this happen? How does a research paper get this screwed up?Easy. They had their conclusion in mind. And they went out looking for a way to justify that conclusion. The way they compiled their data is all we need to see to recognize this simple fact.

Is it possible for me to apply for a university even though I don't have any education record? If impossible, what should I do to go to college?

If you have no record of your education and you are educated, you can simply apply to get a GED. This counts as equivalent to high school education. There are colleges which will accept you with a GED.General Educational Development - WikipediaI expect all countries to have something equivalent to a GED.

I can't find work on my own. How do I join a union?

Simply joining a union is very difficult as they have to perform a background check on you and you have to provide transcripts of your high school graduation, your having earned a GED (General Education Development) degree or your college transcripts if any. This is due to the fact that unions have often been used by both corrupt businesses and organized crime to employ workers for "no show" jobs as well as to pad payrolls with ghost employees. My advice (For what it is worth): Contact the unions in your area and determine if they are indeed looking for apprentices and what you have to do to join their apprenticeship program. You may find that you have just as difficult a time becoming a union member as you do becoming an employee. Also, you'll need to accept the fact that union employment through a craft union (A union where members are all members are of a single trade) is essentially a series of temporary or contract assignments of varying length and that you are going to be at or near the bottom of potential callouts for work for as long as five years until you have established seniority within the union.Additionally, you'll have to pay your union dues to remain in good standing. This is whether or not you are employed and those dues will also be deducted from your paychecks when you are working. If this isn't something that you agree with, then you should probable reconsider union employment. Finally, since you didn't state why you are unable to obtain a non-union position, I would have to caution you that if it is due to a lack of skills, a lack of education or a criminal record, you may also be unable to obtain union employment. The days of young men walking into union halls and there being jobs available are over. The majority of craft unions require either an apprenticeship to have been completed, the apprenticeship to be ongoing or that you have become a journeyman or master in a specific craft.Good luck.
