How can someone who has to do 2 extra years of high school make it in life?

Wow…….. Two Whole Extra Years………………………..In EIGHTH grade, I had three male classmates who were TWENTY-ONE years old. 8th grade. 21 years old.In order to drop out (then) one had to be 16 or older and have Finished 8th grade. Those Men, parked in the teachers’ parking lot and went to their Jobs after school.Upon graduation, all three dropped out, and continued with very successful careers in the construction industry.Less whining and complaining and more doing. If you don’t need a high school degree for your future career, then at (now) age 18, drop out, and get a GED certificate while you work as an Apprentice in your chosen field. All the best.

Is getting a GED like giving up?

A GED is exactly what you need: Get a High School diploma "equivalent", so you can get into college faster. General Educational DevelopmentI fail to see how this is in any way giving up. Just the opposite! To me a GED is one mark of a determined individual who is not giving up. In fact, there is a test called ATB (ability to benefit) that some colleges offer, to let you go without a High School diploma, and no, that would not be "giving up" either. Do you have to have a high school diploma or your GED if you want to go to college? So you are the first in your family to get a GED... So? Do you think your parents and siblings will be any less proud? On the contrary, they may be more so! I certainly would be, knowing that home-schooling is self motivated, and therefore much harder to finish than the typical drone who gets it force fed in a government-run babysitting institution. Even if all you ever do is go get your GED, you should never be embarrassed by it. Be proud. Hold your head high. You did it the HARD WAY.And yes, you can go to a community college and then get a 4 year degree with a GED. Or you can make a very good career and lifestyle just with "certifications" for specific fields. Or you could ignore college and formal education completely and still become more educated than a typical PhD, if you read and study enough on your own. If you stop worrying about the judgments of society, you can focus on what works for you.In the end, it doesn't matter in the slightest how you get the education you want, it just matters that you do it! Don't worry about prestige, don't worry about status, just go get the tools you need to make your dreams reality.

What was the most shocking thing you have found out about your parents when you were a kid? How did you react to it?

For 18 years, my mother told me that she had remained a virgin until marriage; and that she had graduated from high school. She explained that her actual diploma had been lost in a house fire. When I turned 18, I went looking for my biological father. He and my mother had divorced when I was 2. After spending some time with him, he and his new family invited me for Easter dinner. My biological grandmother was there, and made it her goal to bad mouth my mom any way she could, apparently. She brought to my attention that my mom and dad were married in September 1979…I was born in February 1980. Then, she made sure to let me know that my mom “couldn't” continue school being pregnant, so she didn't graduate.Although there was a lot more that my grandmother told me that day, those two things were the two main things that my mother constantly told me were important to achieve, in order to have a good future. So to find out that she lied, was disheartening. However, once she explained that the only reason she didn't finish school was because my bio dad wouldn't “allow" her to go to school or work, and I considered the times they were living in then, I quickly found compassion for her rather than resentment. My entire childhood, my mom told my sister and me that my biological father had been very abusive toward her, and that his mother had always been extremely rude to her.Since that Easter in 1998, I have not had any contact with my father's mother. I know deep down that the only reason my grandmother brought any of this up, was to drive a wedge between my mom and me.To me, that was a pitiful move to make on my grandmother's behalf, and it definitely backfired on her.*Edit*Once my mom's secret was out, she decided to pursue her high school diploma…not a GED. She started her schooling in the fall of 1998, and even though she did receive her high school diploma, she did not stop there. It is now 2020, and she's still in college, with countless degrees and/or certifications, in a variety of areas.*********WOOOOW*********72K??*************Thank you all so much for reading about my life. I can't believe I have received so much positive feedback! This is my first answer to really get much response, but if you would like to know more about my crazy life/family, feel free to read my other posts. Thanks!!
