This is truly a tough subject and it's very difficult to have the right answer. Everyone is different which means everyone grieves differently. Some people need constant support while some people want to be left alone and take time to themselves, but the best thing you can do is make yourself available to your girlfriend and be there for her. Make sure she knows you are there if she needs to talk or something as simple as a hug. Your support will help her get through it in her own time.Another thing you could do would be to do something to help remember her sister in a positive way. For example, donating to Cancer research in her name, or running in a relay for Cancer, make her a scrapbook of photos with her and her family. Help her remember her sister's life instead of dwell on her death. Shifting this focus could really help her bounce back. I'm sure she'll be fine and I think it's very nice of you to show such concern for her!UPDATE-This past July, my mother, sister, father, and two dogs (my entire family) passed away in a plane crash. Because of this experience, I must change my answer.Unfortunately, I've realized that (for me at least) there is little anyone can do or say to make you feel any better, unless they have experienced a loss as close as yours. It's strange, but I genuinely feel closer to my family that's still living and with a few strangers that have been in a similar situation to me (that have lost their entire family in an accident) than I do my own best friends.I can also say that I don't think I will ever be normal after this incident, unfortunately. I think I am permanently changed, but I also don't think that has to be in a negative way. Again, it varies person to person, but I think to expect someone to be just as normal as they were before the incident is unrealistic, at least for awhile.

I was in my 20’s when my mother died at the age of 54. From her deathbed, she relayed her regrets for some (major) decisions in her life, and I vowed to live my life in such way that I would not have any regrets when I got to the end of my life.Thus far, I have been successful at that and have seized every opportunity that has come my way. I can mostly say that I have no regrets, and there are only a few decisions that might have steered my life a little differently.I have lived life to the fullest in career, travels, and learned from my relationships. However, now that I’m older and “wiser” and wrapped up in raising children, working, and general life, I do wish I had spent more of my youth helping others instead of partying and having fun. I wasn’t aware enough to know how many people and/or causes in the world need our help. Had I known this, I would have liked to spend some of my youthful energy helping others. Luckily, I still have plenty of time to do just that!EDIT: Thank you for all of the upvotes. I had no idea how many people read these answers.
