Just in case you are seriously considering abandoning a girl you made pregnant:You can leave your g/f but if you believe the embryo has your DNA, you cannot abandon financial responsibility for the child you created. In many areas she can sue you for 18+ years of child support and win if a DNA test confirms her claim.In the US, if you do not pay court-ordered child support, you are known as a “deadbeat Dad”. The courts WILL garnish your wages and tax refunds if you do not pay your child support. They can ruin your credit rating, freeze your bank accounts and even place liens against any property you (ever) own.Abandon her if you want, but earning that double major won’t help you enjoy your life free from responsibility. Currently, there is no right to "financial abortion," or to disclaim fatherhood. In one well-publicized case, a father in Michigan objected to child support payments when his ex-partner gave birth after knowing he did not want children. The court rejected his argument that, since a woman may avoid motherhood through abortion, the man had a right to disclaim responsibility for a child born against his wishes. The court saw the question not as one of the father's interests versus the mother's, but of the child's right to parental support. Once a child is born, the parents are responsible for its support and education.Guys — use condoms & spermicide, get a vasectomy or keep your pants zipped. Just because YOU won’t get pregnant, carry a new life in your body or give birth to a squalling human does not mean your life will not be affected by causing a pregnancy.

This actually happened to us. We stopped getting child support deposits and when I sent an email to my granddaughter’s dad he said it was still being held out of his check.Come to find out the employer had gone over to computers and he didn’t know how to use one yet. So he had the money held out but didn’t have any idea how to do pay it in. When the state was done with the employer he was out of business and the dad got sued by the state for non-payment. Even though he could show it was held out.I didn’t think it was fair but the office of child support enforcement put a lien on his income tax refund one year. His wife filed injured spouse so only his portion of their income refund was affected. We got about a thousand dollars in “back child support”. I felt badly for him but when it came down to it the child was owed the support and the employer had kept it and ended up not having any money. He just let his business go and I assume he went off and opened a new one. I don’t know. I assume the dad could have sued him if he wanted to.The money is owed, even if there is a third party involved/employer, the money has to be received by the one the court order says it’s to be paid to.

Last January 2nd I forgave 100,000 in back support in Wisconsin. My daughter is now 38 years old. I raised her alone and put her through college on my own. The child support lien kept the ex from buying a home. At seventy and on social security it was unlikely he would ever pay it. I did not need to go to court. I visited the county child support office where the order originated and signed an affidavit to get the order forgiven. In a month it was done. He can buy a home and move his 92 year old mother in with him. I guess it is a matter of karma for me but I have not regretted this decision. My ex and I are both attorneys and a child support order of 200 per month could have been easy for him to pay. I am responding to let you know that you can handle this outside of a court hearing because the child is over 18. Whatever you decide will be the right decision for you. Judith
