Hi Madhavan,Before coming to example of latent defects in software testing, let me shed some light on core meaning of latent defect. Latent defect is a type of bug which has been residing in current version software application & was not caught in previous releases of the application. Mostly, these types of bugs are unexpected outcome of any corner/edge case scenarios which was executed with some specific set of test data.Now, let me provide one real time below example of latent defect in software applications based on work my experience with software testing companySuppose a new product is launched by XYZ company in August 2018 & customer bought the same and registering for its warranty in September 2018. Now, customer has to fill online warranty registration form (which have ‘Purchase Date’ field configured with date picker control allowing you to select previous dates as well) and will select purchase date to previous month i.e August 2018. In real time, most likely the customer will enter correct purchase date while registration, but think of scenarios if customer accidentally selects purchase date older than product launch date(i.e before August 2018) and application does not handle this gently(no check is present for this scenario). So, this issue will not provide any harm at present but can have worst effects and can create trouble in future when customer will claim for his product warranty with incorrect purchase date.Though latent bugs do not have major impact on application, but they should not be ignored as they could bite us in future release.Hope the above information will be helpful for you.Thanks,Anand

The main reason to register a product is to make it as easy as possible to take advantage of the manufacrurer’s warranty. You never know when a product is going to fail (or, yes, even be recalled). When it happens, you probably aren’t going to have the receipt conveniently filed away. But if you’ve already registered the product, they should already have you in their system, which should speed the process along.On a side note, most online product-registration forms include a checkbox to opt in or out of receiving mail—electronic or otherwise—from their partners, etc.

Good question, one that I had wondered about as well. Most people are just too lazy and preoccupied to fill out registration card and send it in to company is my best answer. Perhaps if their was a simple scan option of warranty registration like a barcode, and then your customer information was populated on application like it is on so many other online forms, then it would be so simple to register, but think about it, why would manufacturers want to make registering your item which will cost them money in the long term. They could care less about your protection from defects, they will make more by making it as difficult as possible to register for a warranty. In this day of online ordering of products, there should be an automated warranty registration process which activates the moment you make the purchase. Would be so simple to do, yet again, there is no incentive for manufacturers to make it easy when it costs them money.
