PDF Editor FAQ

How are "destructible environments" like the ones in the Battlefield game series made? Is it some kind of graphic work, or is it the game engine? If it's the game engine, then how does a game engine create "destructible environments?"

Ernest gave you one way modifiable environments are created, which is the traditional way. There are a few other techniques worth mentioning though. These all are more computationally expensive but require less planning and art work.(1) Rather then having the artist design the way things fall apart, their are simulated techniques that simulate "fracture patterns" in surfaces. Some modern modeling software will actually do this for you to help you-prebuild things that can come apart, but we have so much computational power in a modern game computer that it is actually possible to do this limitedly "on the fly" today.(2) Dents can be calculated on the fly relatively cheaply using a "soft body physics" modelling technique. Soft body techniques move individual vertices in relation to other vertices according to constrain rules such as "vertex v1 wants to be D distance from vertex v2." You see this particularly in car destruction games today.(3) Environments you can carve or tunnel in these days are generally modeld as voxel grids. Rather then using polygons to describe the objects, they use a grid much like a 3D sheet of graph paper. In each "box" (called a voxel" of the graph paper is coded the material that is in the space (or if it is empty). Its easy to "cut away" parts by changing their contents ot nothing, exposing what is beneath the cut away parts.Raw voxels look a lot like stack of little bricks or legos (think Minecraft), but they can be smoothed for rendering by converting to polygons just before drawing using a technique called Marching cubes.A good example of a combination of voxels and marching cubes is EQ Landmark.

How do I create accurate blueprints or a floor plan for professional use for a two floor flat?

This is lifted from my answer to an earlier question. If you’re looking to create plans for your own reference, you can do it yourself or hire somebody to do it for you. This is what I typically have to do when starting a residential addition or renovation project. Measure each room and locate the windows and doors. 2x4 wood stud walls with 1/2″ gypsum wallboard on each side are typically 5″ thick, something you can verify by measuring the width of door jambs. Residential doors are typically 6′-8″ high, and 3′-0″ wide for front doors, 2′-6″ or 2′-8″ for bedrooms, and 2′-0″ for bathrooms (again, verify in field). Concrete masonry (cinder block) basement walls are typically 8″ thick, and the outside face will align with the studs above, unless there is a brick veneer, in which case the studs will align with the inside face and the bricks (4″ thick) with the outside face. (These dimensions are nominal, but close enough for your purposes.) This measuring is best done with two people to hold the tape measure and take notes, or you can spring for a laser measuring device. Now, assuming you don’t have a CAD program, sit down and carefully draw the plan to scale (no cheating!). If you don’t have T-square or parallel bar, you can use graph paper to keep everything straight. Most house plans will fit on an 8 1/2″ x 11″ sheet at a scale of 1/8″=1′-0″. Buy yourself an architectural scale to save having to do the arithmetic (available at art supply stores). A bonus of doing this exercise is that the way rooms fit together will make sense, and you can discover any hidden treasure rooms the previous owner left behind.
