How do I create accurate blueprints or a floor plan for professional use for a two floor flat?

This is lifted from my answer to an earlier question. If you’re looking to create plans for your own reference, you can do it yourself or hire somebody to do it for you. This is what I typically have to do when starting a residential addition or renovation project. Measure each room and locate the windows and doors. 2x4 wood stud walls with 1/2″ gypsum wallboard on each side are typically 5″ thick, something you can verify by measuring the width of door jambs. Residential doors are typically 6′-8″ high, and 3′-0″ wide for front doors, 2′-6″ or 2′-8″ for bedrooms, and 2′-0″ for bathrooms (again, verify in field). Concrete masonry (cinder block) basement walls are typically 8″ thick, and the outside face will align with the studs above, unless there is a brick veneer, in which case the studs will align with the inside face and the bricks (4″ thick) with the outside face. (These dimensions are nominal, but close enough for your purposes.) This measuring is best done with two people to hold the tape measure and take notes, or you can spring for a laser measuring device. Now, assuming you don’t have a CAD program, sit down and carefully draw the plan to scale (no cheating!). If you don’t have T-square or parallel bar, you can use graph paper to keep everything straight. Most house plans will fit on an 8 1/2″ x 11″ sheet at a scale of 1/8″=1′-0″. Buy yourself an architectural scale to save having to do the arithmetic (available at art supply stores). A bonus of doing this exercise is that the way rooms fit together will make sense, and you can discover any hidden treasure rooms the previous owner left behind.
