How do I deal with negative teaching evaluations?

If you receive a negative teaching evaluation, you have two choices:Ignore it.Do better.I have received two negative evaluations over 20 years. I think it’s worth explaining both of them.I took my first teaching job in a classroom I took over most of the way through the year. The teacher who had previously taught those classes had quit because she decided that the hell the kids were putting her through was worse than the dead-end job in insurance she’d left but that was now looking pretty good. During the months of both her and then multiple substitutes, the three classes of juniors had gone completely feral. They were monsters. Complete Lord of the Flies. But I was wrestling them into shape. The two freshman classes I had were still really good kids.I was pretty lucky that the VP had chosen one of my freshman classes. I didn’t bother altering my lesson plan to run a dog and pony show. I just taught the same plan on the “oral tradition” as I’d already had slated. It was 1998. The room still had a blackboard and an old school overhead projector. The lesson went off without a hitch. Students were entertained and learned a lot about Viking mythology and how myths changed, possibly starting out as original stories but becoming completely fantastical stories later.I was shocked when I got a low rating. Why did I get one? Midway through the lesson, my overhead marker had run out of ink. I’d quickly realized it, put it down, walked ten feet to my desk, grabbed a fresh pen, and kept going. Ms. Bell’s reasoning? “Materials not prepared.” What? It took me a whole five seconds! She didn’t want to engage in a debate over this, so her ruling stuck. Fat lot of good it did them; I was already planning on leaving. My second negative evaluation was last year. It wasn’t technically an evaluation. It also wasn’t necessarily “negative.” It was an “informal evaluation” that had a really insulting comment on it. My toughest class last year was a “sheltered English” class. I’d been working hard with them to just be able to give a simple presentation. Still, I’d succeeded. Kids were doing their presentations as part of their final for first semester. Then a VP walked in and sat in the back. She made some notes, got up, and left.I received my digital form the next day. She noted very little. Nothing was really “positive.” She just described what was going on. She did make damned sure to note that several students were on their phones, passing them around. “How are students being held responsible for listening to the speeches from other students?”I was outraged for several reasons:A month before, admin had promised us that we were the experts in the field, so if we were having students use phones in class, they wouldn’t have a problem with it.The students who were passing their phones around were having the other kids proof their presentations. This was their final. What did she want me to do? Give them an assignment on the last day that I wouldn’t have time to grade before grades were due?I feel that I’d been set up to fail the entire semester thus far. They wouldn’t give me an aide who spoke other languages, wouldn’t let me meet with district people in charge of the EL program so that I could get help, and told me that I was taking this class the day before school started (ensuring that I couldn’t go to the summer training the DO had offered).I don’t really feel that either of these evaluations was good. I ignored the first one. The second one enraged me to the point that I walked into the VP’s office and had my say. I think I ended it with, “When someone is drowning, they don’t necessarily expect you to throw them a rope, but it’s the height of rudeness to splash them with more water.” Then I got up and stalked out. If she wanted to go after me, she’d have to do it through my union rep. What if the evaluation was valid?Teach better. Look at what you’re doing, find the weakness, and try to fix it.

Is it a good idea to make professor performance reviews public in universities?

In my experience it is often only a vocal minority of students that bother to submit evaluation forms, and quite often these vocal students can be overly negative. At any rate, these kinds of "evaluations" are purely anecdotal in nature. Moreover, surprisingly many students tend to focus on rather superficial characteristics of teaching such as its entertainment value or difficulty. Finally, education researchers have looked into the nature of student reviews and discovered that anonymous reviews more often tend towards the negative. From the point of view of symmetry I would be uneasy if students were allowed by the university to make anonymous public comments about a particular employer. For these reasons I am extremely wary of the idea of universities making performance reviews by students public.

Why is the end term result of GGSIPU mostly unpredictable?

I am going to write the truth about this unfair evaluation..there are few things u must know...1. GGSIPU pays Rs. 25 per answer book ....in one bundle there are 30 answer books so it makes Rs750/- for evaluating one bundle....GGSIPU norms say that a evaluator must take 3 hours to evaluate one bundle....so in a day a evaluator can evaluate a maximum of two bundles.....which makes a total earning of Rs.1500/- per day + a conveance of Rs.600/- per day making the total amount = Rs. 2100/-.Now what actually happens is in the university there are two evaluation centres one for first and third year and the other for second and final year.....now actually what happens is....an evaluator reaches centre A at 9:30 am and get a bundle issued which he/she checks in one hour but do not deposit it as the university employees will not take it back before three hours...so they leave that bundle there and rush too the B centre and get another bundle issued there at 11:00 they check it by 12:00 now they rush back to centre A to return their previous bundle and get a new bundle issued there....the same process is repeated and an evaluator ends up in checking two bundles each at both evaluation centres thus earning Rs. 4200/- a day instead of Rs. 2100/- a day..now just imagine the answer book u wrote in 3 hours is evaluated in less then 2 minutes.....coz the evaluator has to right the marks on front sheet and do the total and also fill an additional evaluation sheet with marks....and all this he does in a maximum of 1 and a half hour for 30 answer books. This is done by around 20 % evaluators who comes for evaluation.2. To be an evaluator the university ask every evaluator to fill a form which contains a maximum of four subject that the evaluator has taught in the current semester.....this form need to be signed by the hod and the head of the institution also......now the beauty is very few teachers teaches more then two subject in college but in these forms most of the evaluators fill four subjects....now imagine four subject for centre A and four subject for centre B which mean they know 8 subjects and thus makes them elligible to check copies of 8 different subjects...coz if one subject answer books are over then they can get the next subject issued....3. Approx. 80 % of the evaluators do not prepare a solution nor do they know the solution.....they are just giving average marks.....that is the reason why the students writing anything get marks and often pass the exams.4. Most of the senior and sincere teachers do not go for evaluation....the people doing evaluation are primarily those who are on consolidated salary getting anything between Rs.20,000/ to Rs. 30,000/- as salary from there parent college....so they find it as an opportunity to earn some extra money.....just imagine that there are evaluators who earn around Rs. 50,000/ or even more during evaluation......this should explain most of the reasons....5. The fact is very few evaluators actually evaluate the answer books....90% of evaluation is done with just the monitary benefits associated with it....so until the university takes some serious counter measures .....this will continue to happen.....I am sorry for those who feel offended by my answer....but am ready to face any debate who could challenge my answer.....Mukesh Sahu.Assistant Professor (ECE Deptt)H.O.D.
