The British, who had a colony next to Alaska in British Columbia, were both able and willing to take Alaska. It appeared that a weak Russian Empire could not resist a British takeover of Alaska. At that time Britain, not America, was Russia's arch enemy. Russia also had more important things to take/retain in Asia and Europe. The money was useful in that regard.Americans were somewhat ambivalent about the purchase. Nobody knew about the value of stuff locked beneath that ice. Americans bought it probably with an idea of getting one more crack at conquering Canada or at the least get hold of British Columbia.Since it made a strategic sense for each side, the sale went through.

US residents can perfectly legally enter Canada to drive to Alaska, along a direct route with minimal stops. If we only stop for gas, food, and a hotel and keep to ourselves, everything is fine and dandy.What’s illegal is to linger or stay in Canada. Stopping at a hotel on the direct route is fine. Deciding to extend the trip by spending a week in Banff isn’t. Anyone who enters Canada intending to drive to Alaska and doesn’t exit to Alaska will have a lot of explaining to do when returning to Canada in the future. Chances are good that anyone abusing our privilege of transiting Canada to get to Alaska won’t be allowed to return to Canada.This has apparently been a bit of a problem in Canada. Not me but my friend.So for a couple of weeks my friend, Ella (not real name) had been waking up with bruises all over her legs and hips. She would show me and she was starting to freak out because it was strange and Ella didn’t normally bruise easily. After a couple more days it was still happening so I suggested maybe she wasn’t eating properly as this had happened to me once, not as dramatic though.It stopped for a while then started again but now she had scratches too. I said she should record her self sleeping, as a joke. She did it and what she found changed her forever.For the past month her 20 year old step-brother had been coming in to her room and RAPING her. I was shocked. That explained the bruises, he was rough. She started getting depressed and stopped coming to school everyday. She was always be paranoid and would jump and sometimes scream at someones touch. I felt so bad for her and never left her alone. I was confused with why she didn’t feel it and wake up, it was because she had meds to get her to sleep because she had anxiety that would keep her up and dangerous sleep walking.We went to her parents and the police and he was put in jail.Ella has been going to therapy now for 2 years because of this.
