I have not reviewed the parental-leave policies at Netflix prior to this announcement. Based on what I've been told by other employees who have had children while working at Netflix, the new policy clarifies a policy that was ambiguous.For qualified employees, California State Disability Insurance to provides 6 weeks of paid time off for maternity leave, capped at a certain dollar amount. Netflix (as with many other employers) paid the difference to make sure employees were covered at 100% of their salary. Further, California Family Rights Act (CFRA) allows parents to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave. Consistent with the "no policy" vacation policy, parents could take time off with full pay.While Netflix did not limit time off for parents, some employees may have believed that parental leave was limited to 6 to 12 weeks due to the coordination with SDI and minimums set by CFRA. The new policy clarifies to employees that leave is not limited by those factors or to what competing companies offer.Note: I do not know the official reason for the policy change and my speculation is based on what other employees have stated about the previous policy.
