Which was the best fighter of WW2?

This type of question never fails to elude the straightforward answer, primarily because they rarely have a straightforward answer. As a participant in WWII, the question of which fighter was best largely depended on your circumstances and what was available to address those circumstances. The Hawker Hurricane IAt the time of the Battle of Britain, the two principal fighters of the RAF were the Spitfire Ia and the Hurricane I. While the Spitfire had the clear technological/performance edge over the Hurricane, the latter existed in roughly double the numbers of the former. The Hurricane in fact accounted for more enemy aircraft than all other defences combined to include Spitfires, Defiants/other aircraft, AA and balloons. While the Bf109E rather soundly outclassed the Hurricane platform vs platform, it could not defeat the Hurricane as a part of the UK’s integrated air defence system, owing largely to its innate short-leggedness.Best early-war fighter for the RAF - the Hurricane. The Curtiss P-40The morning after Pearl Harbour, the US were coming to terms with more than just the treacherous act of the previous day. Their entire air war doctrine was already unravelling even before the Japanese strike. Existing aircraft optimised for the wrong part of the sky coupled with lessons coming in from the aerial fighting in Europe meant that a large-scale re-think was necessary for both her Army and Naval air power. In the meantime, the US was going to have to prosecute a war with what she had and what she had in numbers at the outbreak of hostilites was the Curtiss P-40. The P-40 was a late-30s reincarnation of a mid-30s fighter the P-36, the difference being the substitution of the Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp for the Allison V-1710. USAAC warfighting doctrine had optimised the supercharger for low-level work. While the P-40 would evolve its performance always ruled it out of direct participation in the ETO. It did however do sterling service, punching above its weight in the PTO where its pilots quickly learned the best tactics for dealing with the nimble Japanese Army and Navy fighters it was encountering.Best early-war fighter for the USAAF - the P-40.The Yakovlev Yak-7The Soviet Union was initially in disarray after the near-total destruction of the VVS during the first week of Op Barbarossa but the Yakovlev design bureau eventually came up with the Yak-7, which was roughly equal in performance to the Bf109 though deficient to the latter in the vertical. It was however, fast and maneouverable and armed with a 20mm cannon.Best early-war fighter for the VVS - the Yakovlev Yak-7.The Focke-wulf Fw190APost-Battle of Britain and with the RAF and the Luftwaffe embroiled in their cross-channel jousting, the situation stood at roughly parity with the Spitfire Vb and the Bf109F countering each other in much the same way as their forebears the Spitfire Ia and Bf109E did. This changed dramatically in favour of the Axis with the introduction of the Fw190A which almost completely outclassed the current mark of Spitfire. It was up to 40mph faster at all altitudes, climbed faster, dived faster and rolled markedly faster; the Spitfire retained only its tighter turn but even this was negated to a large extent by the roll rate of the Focke Wulf and the energy the new fighter was bringing to the engagement. The Fw190A would continue to kick RAF cross-channel forays in the teeth until mid-1942 when the RAF, with development of the Spitfire VIII not yet complete, hastily lashed together the Spitfire IX to redress the balance.Best mid-war fighter for the Luftwaffe - the Fw190A.F6F HellcatThe war off the carriers in the PTO took a decisive turn with the replacement of the F4F Wildcat with the F6F Hellcat. While the idea that it was conceived as a ‘zero destroyer’ is a myth, it incorporated alot of lessons learned from the early-war combats with front-line Japanese Army and Navy fighters. It was much more powerful than its forebear and imbued with a very rugged construction. The generous lift characteristics of its large wingspan made it much more forgiving to land on a carrier than its contemporary the F4U. Like its USAAF peers it was armed with 6 x .50cal heavy machine guns and the F6F accounted for more enemy aircraft in the PTO than any other naval fighter.Best mid-war fighter for the US Navy - the F6F HellcatTempest VWhile the Hawker Typhoon Ib disappointed in its design role (the thick wing was poor at altitude) it was also earning itself a reputation as something of a liability to its pilots. The Napier Sabre engine, with its hugely complex H-layout was plagued with problems and these problems continued long into the Typhoon’s service. The tail also had a really bad habit of breaking off and a significant number of Typhoon losses had the Luftwaffe nowhere near them. Roland Beamont, RAF and Hawker test pilot described it with characteristic understatement as an aircraft with ‘trouble at both ends’. English Electric bought up Napier and resolved the engine issues at the expense of 3-speed supercharger development and Hawker finally discovered the tail issues were owing to manufacturing tolerances in the horizontal tail surfaces; a millimetric up-curve at the junction with the elevator was putting huge downforce on the tail unit and snapping it off. With the problems resolved however, Hawker set to work on an improved Typhoon, the Hawker Tempest V. It was a superlative fighter, lacking in true altitude performance (topping out at around 18,000ft) but at low to medium altitude it was formidable. When a response was needed for the V1 threat, the RAF’s 122 Wing took up the gauntlet with one of the few Allied fighters able to get on terms with the V1 in order to shoot it down. The Tempest was well respected by Me262 drivers down low, owing to its excellent low-altitude speed.Best late-war fighter for the RAF - the Tempest V.The P-51 MustangWhen the British Purchasing Commission (BPC) visited the US looking for fighter aircraft options, one of the criteria on the table was certainly range. They were looking at the P-40 in some form or other and whether North American Aviation (NAA) could build them. Kindelberger boldly told the BPC that they could build them a better fighter than the P-40 and build it in the time the BPC needed it by. They did it in 117 days, 3 days short of the deadline albeit with a set of main landing gear wheels ‘stolen’ from an AT-6 and the Mustang was born.It provided the counter to the Fw190A menace that the RAF so desperately needed but the Allison in the P-51 was the same Allison constraining the P-40 to low-altitude work. Someone came up with the idea of dropping a Merlin 61 in and a handful of prototypes called Mustang X proved the design. The result, the P-51B/C became a spectacular success with excellent high-altitude performance.Licence production of the Merlin 61 by Packard experienced a frustrating delay while the US draughtsmen converted the British 2D drawings into the 3D drawings that they were familiar with. The cant of the guns was altered to negate a jamming issue under certain ACM and two extra .50s were added. The space under the radio shelf was explored for additional internal fuel capacity. The altitude problem nailed and now the range issue - the 8th AF finally had the long-range escort fighter it needed to strike at Berlin. It is often argued that the P-51 lacked the sharpness of a true interceptor but the inescapable reality of engineering design is something called trade-off; you simply cannot have a fighter that does everything - if you want more of ‘this’ you’ve got to give up some of ‘that’ and if you want long range on internal fuel, the size of the airframe needs to reflect that ability. What the P-51 did have was numbers, pilot training and consequently tactics; as long as the P-51 maintained a high-energy fight it could under most circumstances defeat the best piston-engined fighters that the Luftwaffe were fielding. The 100 or so Allison Mustangs still in service went on to serve with 2TAF, where they practically wrote the book on low-level armed tactical reconnaissance.Best late-war fighter for the USAAF - the P-51B/C/D/K.The Lavochkin La-7The Lavochkin La-7 carried 3 x 20mm cannon and a top speed of over 400mph, it was considered to be a peer in a furball for any Luftwaffe piston-engined fighter though the construction of the fighter, like so many of its Soviet peers would have withstood little in the way of punishment. It was a direct improvement on the La-5 with wooden construction being replaced with metal, once the strategic materials policy was no longer such an issue. The La-7 is credited with ending the superiority in the vertical that the Bf109 enjoyed over Soviet fighters for pretty much all of the war, whilst also being (just about) fast enough to catch low-level Fw190 raiders.Best late-war fighter for the VVS - the Lavochkin La-7.F4U CorsairWhile carrier-qual for the F4U took longer than was anticipated (reduction in oleo suspension stiffness alleviated the problem of the F4U bouncing off the deck on arrival) it was, whether operated from land or eventually carriers, without peer in the PTO. The Japanese Army and Navy struggled to develop or replace any of the in-service fighters from the beginning of the war and the F4U racked up a kill ratio of 11:1. It was a sturdy, ruggedly-built aircraft with a powerful engine and a more than adequate armament of 6 x .50cal heavy machine guns. Japanese fighters simply couldn’t kill it from directly astern, the ordnance just bounced off the F4U’s thick hide. It climbed, dived and ran alot faster than the best the Japanese still had left by the time of its introduction.Best late-war fighter for the US Navy - F4U Corsair

What can an elementary teacher do when a child refuses to sit in time-out?

Oh dear, I can feel my blood pressure rising.Interesting that the responses so far have involved administrators, counselors, and social workers. I’d say if you have that option, you don’t have a problem.I have no idea what to suggest. I can list the different things I did, but they are far from guaranteed. It probably doesn’t need to be said that you need to be calm and matter-of-fact, take action as privately as possible, be proactive if this is a recurring problem with a student, be consistent about when you use the timeout option, timeout should be short—5–10 minutes in elementary.Consider calling it something other than time out— break spot is nice.Tell them they need to take a five minute break and you will start the timer when they move to the correct location—then walk away pretend not to notice what they do. (If they leave the designated spot or cause a major disruption, pause the timer until they are in the right location and reasonably quiet.Give a choice: would you like to take a break in our classroom or next door in Ms. Wilson’s room (be sure to set it up with your colleague in advance. Should we handle this with a time out or loss of computer privilege for the day?Explain what will happen if they don’t serve their timeout —call parent, take away a privilege, call the office, etc (make sure you can do whatever you say you will do.)At another time, do a social skills mini-lesson to teach them how to accept a consequence. “Say, ok, and follow the direction.” Also have a plan for them to discuss the problem with you if they feel that they are being wrongly accused. (Another student may be harassing them, or they may have misheard a direction, etc)Maybe after their five minutes they can have 2 minutes with a calm down toy to get them into a positive mood.Document everything as much as you can— 11:33— student threatened to punch a peer and was asked to take a 5minute break. 11:35 - student hiding under desk and refusing to follow teacher direction to go to break spot. 11:40— offered student choice of break in our class or another classroom (no response). 11:40 —student lying down on the floor 11:50 — prompted student to go to break spot 11:51 student began crawling to the break spot 11:54 — in break spot, set timer, 11:59— student rejoined class. Date and save this documentation. As others noted, this could be a sign of a problem that requires professional mental health services. If this child gets involved with services or needs an IEP, this documentation will be helpful — caution — don’t use any language that is negative about the child — don’t say the child was being obnoxious— describe what happened — “the child was continuing to call out answers without raising their hand after being asked to stop several times, rolling around on the floor, going into peers’ personal space without permission, and making noises with their armpit.”You have my sympathy—I find that the majority of people have no clue how hard this is. Even most educators look at me in disbelief when I tell stories.Of course you know this, but don’t take the behavior personally.
