First time my mother found out I carried, I was visiting her and my father with my wife and children. We hugged hello before brunch at her house, and she felt the weapon on my hip. She had friends that own. Dad has a shotgun. But she didn't expect her baby (a bearded man with children) to be carrying. I asked her if it bothered her, and offered to lock it in my vehicle vault. She declined, and opted for discussion about it. Eighteen months later, she's now asking me to stop by to help her with the online application for her own FOID card. She looks forward to some range time with me. Any excuse to spend time with us children once they leave the nest :)Most discomfort comes from ignorance. Guns are bad because bad people use guns. A pair of tenants wanted to move into a property owned by my employers.I’m the property manager.I invited them to meet me in person, tour the property and drop off their applications at the same time. I had a waiting list of others who wanted the property, as well.The property is a cabin in a fairly remote area near to where the husband works. Not very many opportunities to rent in that area, so places come at a premium.I drove 1 hour just to meet them there.The husband came inside and took the tour. His wife waited outside in the car, in the drivewayI told him “I must have misunderstood. I thought the two of you wanted to rent this house?”“We do.”“Unless she’s ill, sitting in the car while I drove an hour to meet her, tells me otherwise. You’re welcome to leave your applications in case other applicants decide not to rent the place. I won’t rent to someone who wont walk 10 feet inside this cabin and introduce herself to me. But — is she unwell? I can go out to the car and introduce myself.”He ran out to get her, and brought her inside.She behaved as if this was a major inconvenience. Looking down her nose at how small the place was.What she didn’t complain about, she outright announced what she’d have to change right away (in a major way, like “Well we’ll build a sleeping loft against the wall hanging from these exposed beams. Then we’ll have a guest room).And “Well I see a fireplace. So how often will you send a chimney sweep? I’m not cleaning this. Unless you also clean fireplaces for tenants?”She was just a bitter, rude person, for reasons unknown to me, and treated me disrespectfully. Husband kept trying to cajole her into being nice, whispering to me “She’s normally really nice—” etc.Obviously, she didn’t want to live there. He did. Nevertheless, it’s a very inappropriate way to behave in front of who could be your future property manager.I’ve got others on the waiting list. I may even have to bump a few up higher than this couple.UPDATE: They ended up squatting with friends in another unit my owners have, caused a heap of trouble, and now everyone is facing eviction. They are professional couch surfers and my instincts did not fail me. Gonna be a great month. ::sigh::FEDERAL LAWS: Enough. There are no issues here with online applications and not being required to meet in person, so I’ve deleted the legal debate as being irrelevant. We are not speaking about whether someone has the right to apply online to move someplace in the woods in a cabin. We have no online applications and Federal Laws don’t require us to make online applications available nor am I required to approve a stranger who chooses not to meet in person, at, you know — an IN PERSON MEETING.Federal protections are simply not the issue. The question was not “What Federal Laws protect tenants and permit them to act like an ass.” The question was “What was the most unacceptable thing I saw this week” and it was a prospective tenant who waited outside in the car after I drove an hour to meet her and give her a tour. And my answer still holds. I found it unacceptable. Fortunately, I’ll get this see this woman again soon, in the Superior Court, for her unlawful detainer hearing, because she found another way to sneak in and couch-surf in another property. I’ll be sure to tell her that she should find a place that lets her apply online, where she’ll have a better shot at being approved.

Don’t put the year you graduated from college. It’s illegal for them to ask this question (in the US) because it elicits age, and workers over 40 is a protected class, so if you don’t tell them, they can’t complain.For jobs, say how many years you held the job, not the starting and ending dates.Limit your resume to 2 pages by cutting off the oldest experience that doesn’t fit. Show more detail for the most recent jobs, and less detail for older jobs. Title this section “Recent Employment Experience.”Don’t fill in online application forms, but just mail a resume. The online forms often demand start and end year and don’t allow you to demur. This ought to be illegal, but if you “volunteer” the answer, they can use it. Sigh.Don’t tell your recruiter your age either. They aren’t the employer, so apparently they can ask, and tell the employer, and the employer can use it. sigh #2.It will be obvious to anyone who isn’t a moron that you are an older worker, but there will be no way to tell if you’re 40 or 70 until they interview you in-house. A little dye for your hair and beard for men, and carefully applied makeup for women will cut their estimate of your age by 10+ years. Dressing in clothes that don’t show your paunch for men, or that flatters your figure for women, will also help lower their estimate of your age, even if it isn’t what you’d normally wear to work.Does this feel like you’re telling them a lie? It shouldn’t. The only reason they want to know your age is so they can blow you off due to untrue and unflattering stereotypes about older workers. If you can get them to actually look at your experience, instead of your gray hair, then you haven’t lied, and they haven’t pre-judged you.
