PDF Editor FAQ

Which US President would have met the most US Presidents during their lifetime? For instance, I'm assuming John F Kennedy would have met, at one stage or another, Hoover, FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, Johnson, Nixon, Reagan and Clinton

Without actually researching, I would guess John Quincy Adams to have quite a lot. He probably met all of the Presidents who came before him in his youth or childhood, due to them working closely with his father. And the junior Adams lived nearly twenty more years after his term as President, serving in the House of Representatives for most of that time, so he likely would have met all the serving Presidents during those years, which would be through the eleventh President, James K. Polk.Zachary Taylor was a career general, but all the Presidents between him and Lincoln were career politicians so they probably served in Congress with J.Q. Adams. So it's fair to guess that John Quincy Adams would have met all, or maybe all but one of the first 15 Presidents (everyone before Lincoln).Excluding himself, presumably the question does not include meeting oneself.

Who would win if all 45 presidents were to grapple with each other?

For the fun of it I decided to put together a tournament bracket to see how this would play out. The seeding was simply based on the order of their presidential terms. First round byes are just the luck of the draw. I assumed the age at which they were sworn into their first term. The overall outcome shouldn’t be a surprise, but here is how I image it playing out:John Adams v. Thomas Jefferson - Adams was stocky. Jefferson slight and had back problems. Winner: Adams.Andrew Jackson v. Martin Van Buren - Jackson survived a bullet in a duel. Van Buren was not known as a fighter. Winner: Jackson.William H. Harrison v. John Tyler - Harrison was a fighter, but 17 years older than Tyler. Tyler gets lucky in a close one. Winner: Tyler.Millard Fillmore v. Franklin Pierce - Fillmore was in pretty good health. Pierce’s son died just before he entered office and suffered from depression. Pierce just doesn’t have the fight left to win. Winner: Fillmore.Ulysses S. Grant v. Rutherford B. Hayes - You don’t get to lead the Union Army to victory without being tough. Winner: Grant.James A. Garfield v. Chester Arthur - Garfield was lean and athletic. Arthur liked to indulge himself in the finer things. Winner: Garfield.William McKinley v Theodore Roosevelt - Much has already been said about Roosevelt’s toughness and physicality. He also has 12 years on McKinley. Winner: Roosevelt.Calvin Coolidge v. Herbert Hoover - Coolidge slept alot. Was he well-rested or depressed? Hoover was fairly healthy and lived a long life. This match is close. Winner: Hoover.Franklin D. Roosevelt v. Harry S. Truman - Roosevelt has a strong upper body, but doesn’t have the leverage from his legs. Not really a fair fight. Winner: Truman.Lyndon B. Johnson v. Richard Nixon - Johnson is 6′3″. Nixon tries some of his dirty tricks to gain the upper-hand, but Johnson has seen them all before. Winner: Johnson.George H.W. Bush v. Bill Clinton - Bush was a good athlete in the day, but he cannot overcome Clinton’s 18 year advantage. Winner: Clinton.George W. Bush v. Barack Obama - Bush has an excellent workout regimen. Obama is lean and wiry. Obama has youth, but Bush’s extra muscle mass takes the day in a close match. Winner: Bush.James Madison v. James Monroe - Madison is 5′4″ and 100 lbs. Monroe’s size is enough. Winner: Monroe.James Buchanan v. Abraham Lincoln - Lincoln has the height, age and technical wrestling experience. This one is over before it starts. Winner: Lincoln.William H. Taft v. Woodrow Wilson - Taft weighs in at over 300 pounds. Wilson is all intellect. Taft pins Wilson, but it is more accidental than skill. Winner: Taft.Gerald Ford v. Jimmy Carter - Ford is not the clumsy character from Saturday Night Live. He was an excellent athlete. Carter was in good shape, but it’s not enough. Winner: Ford.George Washington v. John Adams - Washington has the height and was in better overall physical condition. His hearing was mostly gone by the time he was in office, so the trash talking won’t bother him. Winner: Washington.John Q. Adams v. Andrew Jackson - Jackson has a slight height advantage. Adams has a slight age advantage. Adams swims every day in the Potomac. Jackson is still tougher than the career public servant. Winner: Jackson.John Tyler v. James K. Polk - Tyler has the height advantage, but Polk has the bulk. This one is close. Winner: Polk.Zachary Taylor v. Millard Fillmore - Taylor was stocky, but had short legs. Fillmore has 14 years on Taylor. Winner: Fillmore.Andrew Johnson v. Ulysses S. Grant - Johnson, 8 years older than Grant, is not known for his physical prowess. Winner: Grant.James A. Garfield v. Grover Cleveland - Cleveland has the weight advantage by almost 100 pounds. But Garfield is quick on his feet. It takes some time, but Garfield eventually prevails. Winner: Garfield.Benjamin Harrison v. Theodore Roosevelt - Harrison was exhausted after the election of 1888. At 5′6″ he is also 4 inches shorter than Roosevelt. Plus, this is Teddy we are talking about. Winner: Roosevelt.Warren G. Harding v. Herbert Hoover - Harding’s bad heart was already suspect before he took office. Unable to catch his breath, Harding is no match. Winner: Hoover.Harry S. Truman v. Dwight D. Eisenhower - Eisenhower had some heart and intestinal issues. But he is lean and strong. Truman has the slight edge in a close battle. Winner: Truman.John F. Kennedy v. Lyndon B. Johnson - Kennedy has numerous health issues, including a very bad back. Despite the 12 year advantage, Kennedy doesn’t fight very hard to avoid further back damage. Winner: Johnson.Ronald Reagan v. Bill Clinton - Reagan was an excellent athlete in his youth. But he is not in his youth any longer. Winner: Clinton.George W. Bush v. Donald Trump - Trump has wrestling experience, but it is the staged WWE variety. Trump also does not believe in exercise. Bush is in shape and has 16 years on Trump. Trump claims he won and/or the fight was fixed. Doesn’t matter. Winner: Bush.George Washington v. James Monroe - Monroe suffered from exhaustion which doesn’t help in his battle with the active Washington. Winner: Washington.Andrew Jackson v. James K. Polk - Jackson is 13 years older, but he is very driven. Polk just doesn’t want it bad enough. Winner: Jackson.Millard Fillmore v. Abraham Lincoln - Fillmore’s surprising run ends here. Winner: Lincoln.Ulysses S. Grant v. James Garfield - Garfield’s height leads to a surprising upset. Winner: Garfield.Theodore Roosevelt v. William H. Taft - The grudge match. Roosevelt didn’t much care for Taft’s presidency so he decided to run against him as a third party candidate. The only winner in that campaign was Wilson. But Wilson isn’t involved in this one. Taft has the bulk, but Roosevelt’s strength is too much to overcome. Winner: Roosevelt.Herbert Hoover v. Harry S. Truman - A very close battle as both men are healthy. Age wins out. Winner: Hoover.Lyndon B. Johnson v. Gerald Ford - Ford is the better athlete, but Johnson’s drive and six year age advantage wears Ford down. Winner: Johnson.Bill Clinton v. George W. Bush - Bush, Sr.’s rooting interests are torn in this one. Bush is in much better shape and overcomes the 8 year age difference. Winner: Bush.George Washington v. Andrew Jackson - Washington has finally met his match. Jackson is a street fighter and is able to overtake the plantation owner. Winner: Jackson.Abraham Lincoln v. James A. Garfield - Garfield had a good run. Lincoln’s height and technique were just too much. Winner: Lincoln.Theodore Roosevelt v. Herbert Hoover - Everyone is asking “How did Hoover get this far?” He had a lucky draw - to this point. Now his luck is over. Winner: Roosevelt.Lyndon B. Johnson v. George W. Bush - Johnson’s drive that has gotten him this far is no match for Bush’s physical fitness. Winner: Bush.Andrew Jackson v. Abraham Lincoln - Lincoln’s height, age, and skill overwhelm Jackson. Winner: Lincoln.Theodore Roosevelt v. George W. Bush - Both competitors are fit, but Roosevelt is at another level. Roosevelt knows what it takes to win a physical fight. Winner: Roosevelt.Theodore Roosevelt v. Abraham Lincoln - The matchup everyone expected. Lincoln has 6 inches on Roosevelt. Roosevelt has 10 years on Lincoln. Lincoln was an excellent wrestler, but Roosevelt’s boxing experience makes him light on his feet. After a long, hard-fought match, Roosevelt’s strength and age are the deciding factors. Champion: Theodore Roosevelt.Your results may vary.Sources:Medical History of U.S. PresidentsHeights of presidents and presidential candidates of the United States - Wikipedia

Which US president was the most athletic?

George Washington walked many miles through dense woods and low hills for years as a frontier surveyor and rode a great deal all of his life which is quite a workout so he probably had the highest level of overall fitness throughout his life.Probably the strongest would be young Abe Lincoln in his teens when he chopped and split oak trees all day for Mississippi riverboats’ cords and cords of fuel and miles of wood fence building would have been in a comparable physical condition. Lincoln was unbeaten in leg wrestling (very strong core, back, and stomach as well as all of the leg muscles) and ax work builds very strong shoulders, chest, arms, core, and hip muscles, especially with oak hardwoods full of moisture and sap.Theodore Roosevelt was a fitness nut from his teen years forward and pursued for many years boxing, Japanese martial arts, brisk long walks, hunting for days and weeks in rough country on horseback and on foot, playing with his many vigorous children on the vast lawns of Sagamore Hill, tennis (I think), rowing, weightlifting and gymnasium exercise daily, and likely more with several hours consumed most days, much more like what a movie star staying in shape for upcoming film roles does.Gerald Ford is the rare President I can think of that had an athletic scholarship to college and was a top-notch high school and college football player who stayed in good shape his entire life with golf and I think swimming gradually his constant regimen. Despite the running jokes about stumbles from “Saturday Night Live” he may have been the most athletically graceful President, surefooted and quick reflexes with good balance from those football days.Barack Obama played basketball frequently and intensely most of his life so far and retains that sort of long, lean build for that sport. He played with professional players guesting in from what I recall and they seemed impressed with his fitness and level of play which is impressive.Ronald Reagan’s summer jobs were as a lifeguard and he was a fast enough and strong enough swimmer to save many people from drowning so his athletic prowess saved the most lives. I think he may have had a football scholarship at his small college initially but transitioned into a local sports broadcaster. The rest of his life he swam often, lifted weights into his 80s, rode horseback at his California ranch where he also did a lot of hard physical work chopping down trees and heavy brush.George H.W. Bush was highly regarded on his Yale baseball team and I think did well in several other varsity sports. He’s played tennis most of his life, sailed, and clearly walks a lot. Most Presidents are fairly sedentery by the nature of their work and time, often very active and fit in their teens and early 20s but little opportunity or time after that.Presidents Eisenhower, Carter, Bushes, Hayes, Pierce, Tyler, Polk, Jackson, Monroe, Madison, and Jefferson all look about the same weight as President as in their youths.
