I worked as a registration secretary in the ER. We would get a new batch of traveling nurses every so often, and this one night I had a newbie in my pod. He seemed eager to make new friends.At one point he was hanging around the charge nurse, which meant he was in my general area too. While I registered patients the charge nurse would assign rooms.After we got through a sweep of new patient registrations and assignments, Newbie decided to tell a joke.“Hey R,” he said to the charge nurse. “What do you tell a woman with two black eyes?”Charge nurse groaned.“Nothing she hasn't already been told twice!”Guffaw, guffaw, guffaw.The charge nurse giggled and shook her head.They both looked over at me. I had stopped typing. I just STARED. They both got quiet, before Newbie decided maybe he should go to work now.If you know anything about me, one of my pet peeves are disguising your shitty beliefs as jokes. I understand gallows humor, especially in the ER, but I know the difference between processing horrible things and just being an asshole. I haven't always been great at speaking up, but sometimes my stare could fill in for me (I've gotten better at confrontation - it's something I've been actively working on with quite a bit of success).I still feel bad that I didn't do more - I thought surely the charge nurse would've reprimanded him, but it turned out my stare was the only retort.It made an impression though. Newbie had to approach me from time to time to handle paperwork. One night out of the corner of my eye I saw him approaching my desk, but first he stopped at the nurse station and I heard him whisper, “What's her name? I have to give these to her and I don't want to get yelled at.”“Claire… she still might yell at you though.”I never heard another unsavory thing from him again, so I guess I got my point across.The ER is an ugly place. But there's a fine line with gallows humor, and considering all the domestic and child abuse cases that we had to witness frequently, that guy had crossed that line.Now I'm known for calling out these kind of “jokes.” And I don't mind being the snowflake, too-PC damn libtard asshole. If domestic abuse humor is the hill you want to die on, it says more about you than me.

Users / Clients / People would always tell me when they want problems fixed…I’m not IT savvy!Neither am I. I’m a legal secretary / people person and my employer knows that. You must send your engineer RIGHT NOW!Sure, I’ll mark it as urgent, but your service entitlement ranks you at the bottom of the priority chain, under all the public-facing super critical services like patient registration, billing counters, emergency departments, operating theatres… I don’t think the Housekeeping department can compete in priority to those. And if you start yelling or use obscenities, my agents are trained to drop the call and escalate it to your management without further explanation.Hey! You’re good at computers, help me fix my (personal PC problems!)Sure! You’ll have to pay me upfront for time, expertise and take me out to dinner. Payment is due in advance and vendor (me) has the right to charge compound interest, recurring billing, etc to my satisfaction depending on mood and personal interest. TANSTAFFL.
