How likely is it that Arizona will become a blue state in the next decade?

I can’t really add too much to User-9805997577958342449's answer to How likely is it that Arizona will become a blue state in the next decade? (seriously good amount of details) except to point out the “old people” effect. From the early 80s through the 2000s, we had a non-stop stream of retirees coming to Arizona, particularly the Phoenix area (there’s an entire suburb, Sun City, designed to be a retirement community).Back about 1980, Arizona was really quite moderate. While there was a very small black population, there was a large Latino population here, as well as Native Americans. While the Natives stayed on the reservations, the Latinos were everywhere. Hell, Governor Raul Castro had just left office in 1977, followed by two more Democratic governors.Enter Ethel and Roger from Philadelphia (my hypothetical retired couple). They found themselves in a state that was growing and changing rapidly…and they now saw Mexicans everywhere. It didn’t take long for them to take Roger’s banking pension and retirement savings and begin supporting nice, clean candidates (read: white males) for their leadership. In 1986, Republican Evan Mecham, who was an absolute jackass, was elected. He was recalled just over a year later for general jackassery and was replaced by a Democrat. In the next election, the man with the douchiest name of all-time, J. Fife Symington III (yes, the third), another Republican, was elected. Yeah, he was convicted of bank fraud and resigned in his 2nd term. While we had Janet Napolitano for a couple terms, it’s been Republican since. For many years, we were served in the Senate by Republican John McCain and Democrat Dennis Deconcini…in 1995, we went full Republican and have been since. Our Congressional districts were horribly gerrymandered, leading to some seriously lopsided Congressional representation (this has since been remedied). However, since about…2005???…that “blue-hair migration” has slowed down…I think a big reason is that we’re getting more and more diverse…and the effects are becoming obvious.Despite the gerrymandering, our Congressional delegates are now 5 Republican and 4 Democrat, and I can pretty much guarantee that Schweikert, from the 6th district, is gone in 2018.McCain looks like he’s done for…his health is fading, fast, so he may very well be replaced by a Democrat, possibly before his term ends. So, I’m not even sure it’ll take 10 years.

Why are gay students sometimes roommates with non-gay students in college dorms?

Just so you know... there are men who happen to be gay, and there are women who happen to be gay. But first, they are men and women.College residence halls have rooms for men and women. We don't have rooms for gay men and women. But since you seem concerned, let me share something that I learned when I was a Hall Director at Arizona State University. Gay students have a difficult time transitioning from their lives at home to their new lives in college. At home, they may have shared their orientation with friends and family. Their friends and family may be very comfortable with who they are. Suddenly, the new college student is in a world where nobody knows they are gay. How do I tell my roommate? Will s/he be mad. Will s/he reject me and demand a new roommate? The gay student is suddenly pushed back into the closet and has to deal with how to come out again. I'm quite sure it wasn't all that easy the first time, and it isn't much better the second.Because I was a Hall Director and managed a staff of RA's, I'll share a tip for any student finding themselves in this position: Talk to your RA first. We spend a lot of time interviewing potential RA's, selecting students who are already approachable and open-minded. We spend weeks training them to be sensitive to all students and any issue they may have; whether they are LGBT or dealing with a medical condition like diabetes. The RA's are trained to listen , and to help. They are trained to help students with transitions to college, regardless of what the student is transitioning from, or to.If you are coming from a position of homophobia, your RA can help you transition, too.Good luck in college. Be open to learning. Meet new and interesting people. Don't skip classes.

Can you make a prediction for the electoral college final totals? Leave one here (with specific reasoning) and we'll meet back here in November to see how accurate they are!
