PDF Editor FAQ

Can 3D printers print out any OBJ file?

First, you’ll need to convert the OBJ file into a STL file. STL files are used among 3D printer control file to describe the actual physical part to be printed.Once you have the STL file, you will need to feed it into your slicer program to convert it into a gcode file. gcode is the actual instructions which the printer uses to print the object. The process of converting the STL into gcode is specific to each printer, since the actual physical capabilities and arrangement of each printer is different. Now, whether that part is actually printable will depend on what was in the OBJ file. Did it actually contain a drawing of a part? Does it fit in your printer’s build volume? Does it contain illegal geometry, impossible overhangs, wall thicknesses or details too thin? Depends on the file, and the capabilities of your printer.

What's preventing 3D printing from becoming mainstream?

Two main reasons:To quote Andy Cohen from one of my favorite 3D Printing podcasts “3D Printing” today: “It's not toaster like.”In order to see one in every house as we have with desktop “2D” printing. The tech HAS to be way more “Plug-and-play.” 3D printers today break a lot more than your average consumer is willing or able to tolerate. Yes, there are some printers and techniques that are more reliable than others but none that truly nail creating an object the way average consumers would expect (think Star Trek replicator.)The lack of “useful” objects to print and the steep learning curve and time investment to create them yourself.Arguably this could be classified as a “1a” since its a more specific example of the whole process not being plug-and-play. In most instances where desktop manufacturing has maximum utility the effort involved is too high to be worth it for most. For example, say the mounting bracket for the upper rack in your dishwasher breaks. “Great!” you think, “I'll just print a replacement!” Slow down cowboy. A) Chances are good you're going to need to either scan or design this part in CAD/CAM software youself. B) Have the proper material to make the part heat resistant enough to be used in the dishwasher. C) You have to be able to do all of this fast enough to outweigh the cost of ordering a part online (if one is even available) D) You have to have the experience / know how to evaluate if the part you need is even printable / will hold up using the printer you have (lots of things aren't)There may come a time where this will become more feasible if companies start to make part models readily available to individuals (good luck with that cutting into service side of biz) but until things like this come to pass and the tech becomes more robust we're going to be hanging out in the hobbyist and high end manufacturer space.

What is "non-printable markup"? Amazon said they removed it from a manuscript uploaded to publish.

I’m guessing you probably uploaded a Word file, right?Non-printable markup is anything in the Word file that won’t be present in the final ebook. It includes, among other things:Word commentsTracked changesReferences or links in an auto-generated Word table of contentsOLE elements from another program like Excel or VisioMacrosEmbedded HTMLThese things won’t show up in the final ebook.
