I think I am qualified to extend my own opinions here. I have dual citizenship, USA-Italy, I lived the first 28 years of my life near Washington, D.C. and I have lived in Italy for almost 43 years.There are many well educated people in the USA and also people who barely learned anything in primary school and are lucky to have graduated from high school. In addition, I think that the majority of American schools teach World history and geography poorly, and forget about learning a foreign language, even though foreign languages are taught in all or most high schools, the kids rarely learn anything.As other people have mentioned, Americans usually get just two weeks vacation and when one factors in jet lag after travelling to Europe or Asia, it does make travel outside the USA more difficult. Expenses can come into play, too. While there are low cost airlines from the USA to Europe, there are much bigger flight advantages to flying around Europe, if one lives here. There are regularly offered round trip flights to just about anywhere for around €30–50, if one is flexable about dates.Since the onset of the Internet, there have been many sites which actively promote conspiracy theories and other misinformation. Unfortunately people everywhere do not do their own investigations and just swallow hook, line and sinker to whatever it is that they want to believe. It does happen everywhere, but I think it is more prevalent in the USA.Since n.45 came into office, the entire USA has divided itself up into his supporters vs everyone else. It is mostly along party lines, Democrats vs Republicans. And at this point I would call many Republicans: Trumplicans, because that is what has come about. In The New York Times, I have read about divorces and refusal to see family and friends based on whether one supports the current POTUS or not. I honestly do not think that a certain percentage of Americans watches news channels such as CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC. Maybe a lot of these people watch FOX, but also some listen to even more extreme right radio shows. I have seen some of these extreme right folks interviewed recently on CNN. They do not think that the US government has the right to make them wear masks, stay at home and take one of the COVID 19 vaccines. One of them, a pastor of a mega church in Tennessee, could not even define pandemic. That pastor is not the only person, definitely an insular type of personality, interviewed. Unfortunately many of these people come right out of that old film “Deliverance”. I am sorry to be so blunt, but that is what I see.When my son was in high school in 2006, we came to visit my family who live near Washington, D.C. Upon a visit to the National Gallery of Art, I noticed my son explaining the architecture of the building to my brother’s now ex wife. She was listening to him, nodding her head and looking at him like he came from outer space. Obviously she did not understand any of his references. I think that explains a lot about the level of the American schools, not all of them of course,but a lot of them. I repeat, my son was in high school, not university.So, to sum up, I do think that many Americans are quite insular, certainly not all, and this is based on many factors.

The idea that “no human is illegal” will come as a surprise to Immigration Canada. Canadian border control and immigration policies are as strict, if not stricter in some areas, as those of the USA. And Immigration Canada has no problem excluding someone from the country who shouldn’t be there and get them on their way out of the country.Canada is very welcoming, as is the USA, once you’re in the door. Getting through it though, those investigating your intent will be downright hostile and cold during that process.Canada just doesn’t use the term “illegal”. They prefer “inadmissible” and “excluded”. Amounts to the same thing in the end.

There is no statute of limitations on misrepresentation or lying on these applications.If this is discovered even 30 or 40 years later and it is determined that disclosure at the time would have resulted in the application being denied, the person will have any benefits that would have resulted from that failure forward stripped from them including permanent residency and citizenship.Also being convicted of a crime after receiving your Green Card is grounds for revocation and deportation. You are expected to be an upstanding individual in all things while a permanent resident. And there are a lot of offenses, including DUI, that can get a Green Card holder deported.So this is why this otherwise law-abiding individual is facing deportation proceedings. That said the process has to play out and he does get his day in immigration court. Odds are good that he may be shown leniency and not be deported. But that will play out long after the short-term emotional outrage of supporters and detractors has been expended and no one is paying attention anymore. The process takes time.But this is a demonstration that a lot of immigration law and rules are “One strike and you’re out”. Seemingly small things or little lies taken at the time to seek advantage in the moment can and will come back to haunt you in very painful ways.Hence why anyone thinking of gaming the US immigration system or leaving things out should think twice or not be surprised when it comes back to bite them far worse later. There are a lot of visitors and would-be immigrants sitting overseas today who are inadmissible to the USA because they lied on an application, forged documents, left information off and so on and are shocked they can’t come to the USA and feel wronged as a result.Allow me to answer the question of if why someone was here illegally simply doesn’t apply for citizenship to “resolve” their situation, I’d love to know where this idea of a simple failure to apply is seen as the problem. Natural born citizens have no experience with the immigration process and make a lot of false assumptions about how it works. Most notably that someone has simply not filed the correct form to fix a problem like we do in everyday life. They don’t know that immigration isn’t like other government services and applying is a much more detailed and perilous process.Illegals can’t take steps to become citizens because there is no steps for them to take! Immigration law, with only a handful of specific edge cases, provides no direct path to citizenship for anyone. The big prerequisite to citizenship is becoming a legal permanent resident. And in order to do that you have to follow a whole other set of rules and there is no easy direct path to it either! If you aren’t able to qualify for permanent residency through the paths available, there is quite literally no way to acquire it or citizenship. Citizenship is the end of that process, not the beginning.Those here illegally can’t even get on the path. They can certainly file all the applications for permanent residency or even citizenship they wish. USCIS will happily take their money (USCIS is a fee-funded agency) and then happily reject the application a few weeks or months later due to being ineligible to apply for and receive that benefit. The notion that illegals are simply one form and fee away from solving their problems is one of the most bizarre yet false ideas that is out there.For anyone thinks that people are deliberately living in these circumstances and are just not taking the steps to become a citizen by some willful or ignorant means, I encourage them to visit their own nation’s immigration website and check out the requirements for citizenship. It will be an eye opening experience and will dispel the notion that the steps are simple, cheap, quick or readily available to all. They aren’t.
