How much revenue is Delhi Metro generating per day?
I suppose this is a guesstimate question. Let me try this...As I live in Noida and do frequent visits by metro, I am quite able to guess the peak hours detail, count of metro lines and frequency of metro. So yes, metro goes crazy during office timings. There are six metro lines. Rest info we have to assume:The day we are going to calculate the revenue for is a weekday.Average number of boxes in one metro = 6Peak hours: 8 - 11 in morning and 5 - 9 in evening. Total = 7 hoursNon-Peak Hours: 6 - 8 in morning, 11 - 5 in afternoon and 9 - 11 in nightNumber of passenger in one box is sensitive to peak hours and non peak hours. For sake of calculation we will keep average size of one box = 150 passengers.Average fare per passenger = Rs20Frequency of metro = 3 minutes (peak hours), 6 minutes (non-peak hours)Note: There are six metro line - Red line, Blue line, Yellow line, Green line, Violet line and Airport Express. Revenue of Airport Express line is not considered in Delhi Metro revenue, so we will keep five metro lines.Revenue calculation for Peak HoursTotal peak hours = (8 am - 11 am) + (5 pm - 9 pm) = 7 hoursNow as we have assumed above that every 3 minutes one metro arrives. So total number of one side metro rides during peak hours = 7 *60/3 = 140Considering both sides ride, the total number of rides will be = 140*2 = 280Keeping above assumed figure in consideration we will calculate the number of passengers in one metro = 6*150 = 900 passengers. Now there are total 5 metro lines and 280 rides so total number of passengers who traveled during peak hours will be = 900*280*5 = 1260000 passengersAssuming that every passenger will pay an average fare of Rs20, total revenue of metro will be = 1260000*20 = Rs252 lakhsRevenue calculation for Non-Peak HoursTotal non-peak hours = (6 am - 8 am) + (11 am - 5 pm) + (9 pm - 11 pm) = 10 hoursNow as we have assumed above that every 6 minutes one metro arrives. So total number of one side metro rides during peak hours = 10 *60/6 = 100Considering both sides ride, the total number of rides will be = 100*2 = 200Keeping above assumed figures in consideration we will calculate the number of passengers in one metro = 6*200 = 1200 passengers. Now there are total 5 metro lines and 200 rides so total number of passengers who traveled during peak hours will be = 1200*200*5 = 1200000 passengersAssuming that every passenger will pay an average fare of Rs20, total revenue of metro will be = 1200000*20 = Rs240 lakhsTotal revenue in 1 day = revenue in peak hours + revenue in non-peak hoursWhich will come to = (252 + 240) = Rs492 lakhsSo yes, Delhi metro is generating near to Rs5 crores per day.
