I’m not a teacher. I was the student who had the strange, but totally true excuse.During my junior year of college, I got the bright idea that I was going to try to lighten my hair a couple shades with some box kit I got from a store. It promptly turned my dark blonde hair a brilliant shade of orange. Since I didn’t feel I could pull off hair that resembled Heat Miser from “The Year Without A Santa Claus,” I immediately started calling salons to try to get an appointment for a professional to correct it. The only appointment I could get within a week’s time was the next day at exactly the same time as my Criminal Law class. My professor was a local prosecutor & had an attendance policy so I decided I’d take a chance & email her to let her know my situation. I explained what I’d done, included a selfie so she could see that I wasn’t lying, and attached the completed homework assignment she’d given the class the day prior. Her response was something like this:“Whitney,Considering both my husband and daughter are redheads, I don’t think your hair looks too bad. However, I can see where it would be a shock to you. Hopefully the stylist will be able to help you out and get it back to blonde. I’ll have your homework assignment graded and returned to you in class on Tuesday.~ Dr Brown”To this day, I’m still amazed that my professor gave me an excused absence for a very bad hair day.

The only thing I can think of that I enjoyed doing when I was a student, which is much more difficult for students to do today, was skipping school.I got my license and my car near the end of my sophomore year of high school. From that point on, I was on my own getting myself to and from school. We were allowed four unexcused absences per class per semester before it started to affect our grade. We were on block scheduling, so we only had four classes per day, each 90 minutes long.Ninety minutes is plenty of time walk to your car, crank up some music, roll down the windows, light up a cigarette, and drive around town.Which is exactly what I did. Out of nowhere, about once per week, while walking to class, I’d think to myself, “Nah. I’m not feeling this class today. I think I’ll take a ride around town instead.” Then I’d casually stroll out to the student parking lot, hop in my car, and leave. I’d be back in time for the next class, though.I only ever got caught once. The assistant principal who caught me as I was driving out of the student parking lot just told me to go back to class. I wasn’t punished.Those carefree teenage days alone in my car, driving around town when I should have been in class, listening to my teenage angst industrial music… those are some of my happiest memories. When I was back in my hometown for a visit last month, I did it again, just for nostalgia purposes. I didn’t drive as fast, my music wasn’t as loud, and I wasn’t smoking, but I did a loop around town, by myself, with the windows down and, briefly, not a care in the world. It was wonderful.I’m told that nowadays it’s a lot harder for students to skip class in the middle of the day. There are cameras and people monitoring the student parking lot and some schools even close the gate around the student parking lot during the day, to prevent “escapees” I guess.

Med school can be tough.You have your morning classes, your clinical postings, your daily tests, your end of postings, on call days, your evening classes and night duties as well.There is no difference between a weekday and a weekend.Its all “study--if you have time eat-study cycle “.But even in this chaos you can find such gemsSo one particular day my friend @KRISHNA KUMARAN ASOKAN didn't come to class.Attendance was taken at 8:00 amNo sign of him.9:00 amStill no krishna in class.10:00 amThe 27th call to his number is also not answered.2:00 pmBang!he enters class like some cowboy in a Western film entering into a bar prepared for a stand off.All eyes are on himThe professor keeps her cool,takes a deep breath and asks “what is the time?”Cool as mint krishna answers “2:00?”“And what time are you supposed to be here?”“8:00” he replies with a face like what Andy dufresne had when he was wrongly convicted for the murder of his wife“And may I know the reason for you absence for the whole 6 hours?”Krishna enters his mind palace…Krishna1:fever?Krishna2:too commonKrishna1:over slept?Krishna2:you already gave that reason last weekKrishna1:was waiting in the ward all this time,didnt know class was happening here?Krishna2:doesn't answer the 27 missed callsThen!that moment krishna1 and krishna2 had a brainwave that shook that mind palace itselfKrishna answers “ma'am, I have an eye infection.Doctor had advised using eye drops”“So?”“The doctor had asked to use the drops and close the eyes for a few minutes”“And?”“I CLOSED MY EYES… LOST TRACK OF TIME”Last thing those eyes saw was a duster flying towards themCheers :)
