PDF Editor FAQ

Do Vietnamese people, who were born in HCMC before 1975 and are still alive, continue to call (occasionally) their home-city Saigon between themselves?

Not even just Saigoneer born after 1975, I was born in the North, after 1975, and also call it Sai Gon. The thing is “Ho Chi Minh City” in Vietnamese is “Thành Phố Hồ Chí Minh”, and that’s a 5 words long name. “Sài Gòn” are only 2 words. I stick with whichever is more convenient when the situation allows. It’s kind of like how people shorten Washington, The District of Columbia to just Washington DC or DC.

Why do US State Capitol buildings look so similar?

Not all of them. But yeah, a lot of them. Some of it was just patriotic vigor, some was just genuine inspiration by the US Capitol. The design is called Neoclassical Architecture and it was very in vogue back when Pierre Charles L'Enfant was awarded the honor of designing the new United States capital, Washington DC. This is known as the L'Enfant Plan. ("The The Infant Plan". . . annoys me the same level as "Please enter your PIN number")The favored style for a long time (and even still) for really important buildings and monuments in the nation's capital remains Neoclassical Architecture [click that link for more details]. Its grandeur inspires even those styles that seek to depart from Neoclassical Architecture. Thus, you can see its influence in recent monuments like the National World War II Memorial (which favors the Art Deco/Beaux Arts styles of the New Deal):This was the United States Capitol building before the American Civil War:Before hostility broke out, the US Government decided to make it a bit more grand, and thus the product went from above, to this:Then finally to this:It's a really beautiful building. I understand that there's an "eye of the beholder" thing and certainly our innate prejudices (both positive and negative) affect how we'll like and appreciate a thing, but as buildings go, it's massive and lovely (in person especially). So inspiring is it considered, that many states simply decided to copy it for their own statehouses. Few of the statehouses compare favorably with what was achieved in Washington DC (especially the Capitol Building), and some -- ghastfully -- make a mockery of it.Ohio Statehouse -- FAIL! It has been -- not too proudly -- stated that there might as well be an "Arbeit Macht Frei" sign in front.North Dakota -- FAIL! (not Neoclassical) captures that certain je ne sais quoi so much better than Ohio's though. . . I believe its style is called "Veaux Soviet Oppressionism". . . if you look closely, you can see the labor camp to the right and given the state (North Dakota) the weather compares favorably with Russian gulags:California Legislature -- SUCCESS! But did we expect otherwise? All those gay, artsy Californians were gonna have the best success at pulling this off.Michigan -- SUCCESS!Non-copy-cats that do a great job:Connecticut (by far the most beautiful, IMO), Gothic Revival:Pennsylvania, Beaux Arts & Renaissance:New York, Classical / Romanesque (though it appears that there should be a maple leaf flying from the roof-tops. . . not very patriotic for 'Muricans):Illinois, Renaissance Revival:And yet some still fail:Hawaii -- FAIL! style. . . ? Um. Legobrick? Neo Citibankist (with drive-thru window) architecture?Louisiana -- FAIL! Twice! The state really has no luck.Current. . . Style? Federal Penitentiarianism? The old one was, apparently, designed by White Castle. If you look closely, you can see the drive-thru window.New Mexico. . . WTF? Are there gladiatorial matches inside?

How is UC Berkeley better than John Hopkins?

Who is John Hopkins?Assuming you are referring The Johns Hopkins University, it is interesting to compare it to the University of California at Berkeley, which are vastly different. Cal has 30,574 undergraduates, and Johns Hopkins has 5,326, or roughly one sixth that of Cal. (While I did not attend Cal, I lived just a few miles away, and attended many events on its campus.) As to graduate students, JHU has more, 14,848 to Cal’s 11,336. Note that the Johns Hopkins graduate numbers include the Medical, Public Health, and School of Advanced International Studies. The first two are on a separate campus in Baltimore, SAIS in Washington DC.Both are research intensive. The first President of UC was Daniel Coit Gilman, who left in disgust at the actions of the California legislature over not doing enough to make it a European-style research institution, to become the first President of Johns Hopkins, where he did what he had wanted to do at UC.Johns Hopkins has the advantages of smaller size, a more cohesive undergraduate experience, yet is large enough to have all the resources of a large university. It is in a nice area of Baltimore, a livable city, but the weather is not as nice as in the Bay Area. Housing costs are much lower than in the People’s Republic of Berkeley. While JHU does not coddle undergraduates, especially compared to many colleges of similar size, neither does Cal. Both are great for self-actualizing students, not so great for those lacking self-discipline. At Johns Hopkins, even undergraduates can spend quality time with top professors, which Cal graduates have told me they were unable to do at Cal.
