PDF Editor FAQ

Why are school districts always "unified"?

To add on to Daniel Kaplan’s answer:The “unified” K-12 school districts often did not start that way. They were usually separate districts which unified at some point, probably to save money. Even just combining two Superintendent positions into one can save you enough to hire three or more new teachers.School districts can save money by sharing a lot of things, like counselors, electives teachers (art, music, etc…), buses, and even landscapers/grounds keepers. They can also save money by buying things in bulk for both districts, like school supplies and even student lunches. They may have also unified because of changing demographics in the communities they served. As the average number of children per household declined, some school districts were over-resourced and under-enrolled.

Are California school districts actually hiring teachers?

A major factor to consider would be what your certification will be in. There is a big mismatch between supply and demand from one endorsement to another. For instance, the most popular endorsement nationwide is elementary education. The second-most is secondary social studies. While there is a decent level demand for elementary, not so much for social studies. You'd have to be an exceptional candidate to get chosen in many geographic locations. And there are endorsements where it seems like districts are always looking for quality candidates. The hardest-to-fill are usually secondary science, secondary math, special education, and ELL. Even if a district is laying off hordes of teachers, they may still be hiring for some of these, since the people being laid off don't have the endorsements to meet the open positions.

How can I get my child into another school district?

Depends where you live. In California, there is school choice which basically says that you can enroll your child in any school if space is available. This is a big if as most top schools are already over enrolled. Also schools are not funded locally. The state distributes money depending on actual attendance. This is not to say that each school district gets an equal amount of money for each day of student attendance. Also, things like facilities can be locally funded through bonds so wealthier communities tend to have better facilities. The host school district does not provide transportation and out of district students do not gain athletic eligibility.
