First and foremost. You’re still young. As a Marine Corps veteran I can promise you that what you see in the movies and video games is not how it is in real life. Now I do not mean to discourage you from enlisting, I just want you to understand what it takes to enlist for which enlisting is not a 9 to 5 job, but a lifestyle.Now with that out of the way lets say you’ve thought about it and made up your mind and are determined to enlist in the armed forces. First, you must decide which branch you would like to enlist into. If your intentions are set on becoming a Sniper. Than you’re limited to either Army or Marine Corps.I cannot speak for the Army for which I had only served within the Marine Corps. If you decide to go ahead and enlist with the Marines, then you must start working out. For which you will be faced with various physical tests such as the ‘Initial Fitness Test’, the ‘Physical Fitness Test’, and the ‘Combat Fitness Test’.The tests consists of:Initial Fitness Test (IST):20 Pull-ups100 Crunches1.5 miles under 17 minutesPhysical Fitness Test (PFT)20 Pull-ups100 Crunches3 miles under 25 minutes (average under 20 minutes)Combat Fitness Test (CFT)This exam is different. It consists of various different physical activities that are related to the battlefield. I do not remember exactly what they are.Also, you must hit the books and study. Specifically for the ASVAB exam. This exam is vital and you cannot enlist any branch if you fail. I highly recommend you head on over to Barnes & Nobles and buy yourself an ASVAB study book. That book should become your bible. Study, study, study. The exam will consist of various fields from Word Knowledge to Mechanical to General Science. In order to become a Sniper, you MUST have a minimum General Technical (GT) score of 100.Lastly, be sure you know how to swim. Everyone must pass a swimming test during boot camp.Being that you’re 15. You are still too young to enlist. So during this time, study for the ASVAB, workout, and swim.The minimum age to enlist in the Marine Corps is 17 (with parental consent) or 18 (without parental consent). Again, enlisting in any military branch is a lifestyle. So you must be completely certain that this is what you want to do for which before you leave for boot camp, you will sign a 4-year active duty contract with another 4 years as Inactive Ready Reserve. (You’ll be home during this time and all this means is that you can be re-activated if needed during a wartime.)Now, when you walk into the recruitment office and inform the recruiter of your intentions, you’ll most likely be enlisting as infantry (03) and you’ll be placed into a Delayed Entry Program (DEP) until you ship out for boot camp. During this time, your recruiter will have workout days for you and other ‘Poolees’ (other people in DEP) to workout. During this time you would also head over to a Military Entry Processing Station (MEPS) to conduct a physical and a whole bunch of testing to see if you’re healthy enough. When your date arrives, you will spend a night in a hotel with all other poolees. (This is your final chance to change your mind before being bussed to the airport.)From there, you’ll be off to conduct your time in Boot Camp, MCT, and MOS School. Snipers must undergo Scout Sniper School which lasts 79 days and must be proficient in every aspect. It is an extremely hard school. Upon passing, then you’ve finally earned the title of a Marine Scout Sniper.Side note, be sure to get used to very long hikes by yourself. I was stationed in Camp Pendleton, California and I have buddies who were Scout Snipers stationed with me. And they occasionally had to go on a very very large orientation course by themselves across the entire span of the base. (Keep in mind the base is extremely large and hot.)Here are some job requirements to become a Scout Sniper:Minimum GT score of 100. (ASVAB)Become qualified as an ‘Expert’ rifleman. (Boot Camp)Possess all the essential qualifications and capabilities of an infantry Marine. (Boot Camp; All Physical Exams, Swimming, etc.)Must have vision correctable to 20/20 in both eyes. Color blindness not allowed. (MEPS)Must of a current First Class PFT score. (Boot Camp; First Class means you must have a perfect score)No history of mental illness.Must be eligible to receive a secret security clearance.Successful completion of Scout Sniper Basic Course at Quantico or School of Infantry.Remember, the higher you score in all exams, the more it helps you and never settle for minimums. Basic military training.Physical fitness, as such, isn’t a necessary requirement: if there are no medical issues, then we can train you to the level of fitness required. Those fitness levels (especially for the combat arms, especially the infantry) would be considered hard for the average Canadian. Here’s an overview of what is expected: if you are selected, and can’t meet this standard, you will be given an opportunity to develop your fitness level to the required MINIMUM level. The usual process of selection for SSC is through NEET PG exam. The candidates are asked for willingness to join Army Dental Corps while one applies for NEET. The consented candidates as per NEET merit (10 times of vacancy) are called for another written exam, interview and physical fitness test.The Final selection is done with a few on waiting list. SSC is of five year duration. While in service, one can write exam for permanent commission held annually.Your performance during Graduation does carry a lot of value. Outstanding performance at academics, extracurricular, sports etc. are given due importance.“Supply“ in any year calls for negative remarks but eventually if you have done well in all other tests, then you can easily overcome this hurdle.
