I’m halfway done with my senior year in high school. How do I go about becoming an FBI agent for my career?

You have at least 7-8 more years before you can apply to be an FBI Special Agent. At a minimum you must complete college and have a few years work experience or law school. So I'll lay out what you can do in the meantime to prepare yourself.1. You be an upstanding citizen don't do drugs, don't break the law, don't be delinquent in bills/student loans2. Complete your studies, being a good student with good grades can help but your skills are more important. I was hired and had a 2.89 GPA. I'm not recommending doing that but I'm just saying Grades aren't the most important part.3. Be physically fit. My squad-mate was the Fitness Test administrator and she failed so many applicants. The test isn't hard 1 minute of push ups, 1 minute of sit-ups, 1 mile run, 300m sprint and pull ups (those don't even count). The test may have changed slightly but train for the test.4. Have a skillset the FBI needs. So examine the website to see the skills they want from FBIJOBS.gov:Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)• Foreign Languages• Law• Emergency Medicine• Certified Public Accountants (CPAs)• Detectives• Military (specifically Special Forces, Explosives, WMD and Intelligence Experts)• Pilots (helicopter, fixed-wing)I got in with military experience in WMD. You go into a field where your passion lies that corresponds to one of these skills. The responses telling you to study criminal justice and/or become a cop are off base. Other fields are a better way to get in. However, I do think that joining the Air Force and working in OSI or Navy NCIS or Army CID is probably a good path (just my opinion). Those telling you to Major in a Foreign Language also probably don't know the program. In my Academy class there were numerous New Agent Trainees (NATs) that were hired for language (Vietnamese, Mandarin, Spanish). These NATs were all native speakers. The language test is so hard that unless you are a native speaker you will probably not pass. So go into a field that fits above that you are passionate about and do a good job.5. You have to actually apply. I can't tell you how many people have told me they want to be an FBI Agent. I ask them if they applied and they say no. You won't become a Special Agent (SA) unless you apply and stick with it.6. Apply for other FBI Jobs and other Federal Law Enforcement (1811 series) jobs. The FBI does hire SAs from other services and from within their own organization. For example one of the best SAs from my class was a former Secret Service agent. I also had a Border Patrol agent in my class. They often will hire from within the analyst and surveillance operations group (SOG) pool. Also maybe you'll find you enjoy being an IRS, Customs or ATF agent more, who knows?Good luck

What are the chances of the United States Border Patrol hiring me at 18 years old? Would me being a Police Explorer count as experience?

Job Announcements for the United States Border Patrol are listed on USAJobs. Make sure you read the job announcement carefully. There are several different ones that can be or there. The poster would most likely be trying to qualify under the “direct hire” option. The current job announcements include both a GS-7 and GS-9 starting pay grade. Both require either work experience in a similar job field of 1 year equivalent to the next pay grade lower (GS-5, or GS-7) or a degree that provides similar experience. Your resume and how you state your experience in it will be critical.Time as a CBP Explorer may be counted as experience but it still depends on how you expires that experience in your resume. In general, a year at an “entry level” job might get you GS-7 starting grade. To get GS-9 you probably need a year of prior law enforcement experience, most likely as a sworn officer but maybe you could spin some higher end security guard time into it.The BP also sometimes hires at the GS-5 level. You usually just need any kind of work experience for over year to qualify, just don't write a completely terrible resume about it.Keep in mind, qualifying and being “hired” are completely different things. The BP also required, a background investigation, polygraph, passing an attitude test, either a Spanish profecincy test or a language aptitude test, medical examination, physical fitness test, and an “interview” test administered by current agents. That gets your foot in the door, you then must attend the Border Patrol Academy for approximately 6 months, pass all required tests (firearms, physical training, immigration law, nationality law, applied authority, driving, Spanish) and then have additional post academy training during your (currently) one year probationary period.
