PDF Editor FAQ
Which is the most comfortable car for long distance travel?
Most people want a big vehicle so they can drag along plenty of stuff. It needs to be powerful, and it should be new too, so it’s reliable.I choose a different route. I have gone on plenty of annual road trips in my 1958 Porsche 356. It’s tiny and has a 1.8 liter four-cylinder engine.A few years ago, just after it was restored, I drove from London to Geneva in Switzerland in it. I packed just what I needed as I was driving alone, and it all fitted in fine. Everywhere I went I got thumbs up signs, and loads of people engaged me in conversation about the car. I had no problems, but I learnt a few things about improving the car for long trips. The following year, with a bigger fuel tank and disc brakes, I drove from London to Stuttgart. It gave me a chance to select some great driving roads, like the B500 Black Forest High Road. It’s driving heaven. Again I made a list of things to improve. Nothing big, as the car had not let me down or revealed any faults. Then I drove from London to Berlin, solo again. The year after that I spent a month driving all over Spain. Since then I've been to Budapest, all over Austria and most recently, I've circumnavigated France. I've made minor tweaks at every opportunity. Now I'm coming to the conclusion that I really need a Coupé. The sun is just too big a ball o’trouble in the regions I drive. I'd also like aircon. Six cylinders would be more comfy too. So I'm thinking of replacing my 356 with an early 911 or an E9 BMW (that's the 3.0 CSI or CS).
If you were going to travel North America in a micro-camper, what items would you pack?
Here’s what I packed for a cross-US and cross-Canada road trip: Packing & Purging for a Cross-Country Road Trip. I wasn’t in a camper, so to that list I’d probably also add a few more cooking-related things, but otherwise the list pretty much covers it.
Can you share experiences about a road trip you went on?
