I read the National Geographic article and it certainly reads like something that would be posted on FB. Just a bunch of well known facts that scientists in their particular fields have known about for decades assembled together like a SiFy tabloid writer would do trying to make a point.Mr Hawking, I think was being a little serendipitous and tongue-in-cheek, when he cautioned about making “Contact” knowing full well that any signals reaching earth would in all probability have traveled 100’s if not 100’s of thousands of light years making us the probable recipient of information concerning what intelligent extraterrestrial life forms were up to long before man walked on earth. And if we responded, there's a great likelihood we or they would be extinct by the time they received our transmissions.On the other side of the coin, we on earth have been transmitting some form of coherent radio frequency signals for only a century; so our nearest listeners could be no farther than 100 light years away, Probably trying to decipher Roosevelt’s speeches or “I love Lucy” dialogue. So I'm not so sure Steven Hawking was even being halfway serious about signaling the stars. After all, we've only been listening for their burst signals for about 30 years. A very very short time considering the age of the Universe is about 13 Billion years old.There’s no doubt we are going to find some form of life in our solar system probably within the decade. Perhaps a microbe or two or maybe even a life form as advanced as the tube worms that live 1000’s of feet beneath our oceans near volcanic sea vents and I'm sure Mr Hawkings realizes this is inevitable.Maybe Jupiter’s Europa, Saturn’s Enceladus or even Mars will give us a life form or two.
