What are the best states to work in as an IAS officer?

Source: A hard copy of the document made by IAS probationers of 2007 batch after their district training in LBSNAA. All feedback were given by officer trainees.I'm writing the salient features of all the cadres as mentioned in that document in an alphabetical order. I hope this will help you to choose your (best) cadre according to your personal definition and motivation level.Note: This is going to be a little long answer but will surely give you an insight into the role of an IAS officer in different parts of India. It has taken me hours (divided in two days) to write this but if it proves to be even slightly helpful to you, my effort is successful. If you don't have so much time, then just read about your state/cadre of interest and upvote :P.1. AGMUTFirst Impressions and Working EnvironmentArunachal Pradesh->Rich Tribal diversity in a geographically remote state->Low population density and low volume of work->Relaxed and informal work environment->Less emphasis on rules and procedures, but need to balance between customary law of tribal's and common law->Great respect for and expectation from the IAS->Limited political interference and dignified conduct of politicalrepresentatives->Sufficient autonomy to do meaningful workAndaman & Nicobar->It could come as a shock to some on account of its location->Relaxed working environmentChandigarh->Chandigarh is a very well developed city with all amenities->Work environment is good and conducivePuducherry->Nice place to be inTraining Structure and Focus AreasArunachal Pradesh->Unstructured training pattern; DC determines the components of training->Pay attention to the judicial attachment, since you will have JMFC powersAndaman & Nicobar->Attachments are flexible, so you can focus on areas that you like.->You can get good exposure on disaster managementChandigarh->Adviser to the Administrator takes a keen interest in the probationers' training->Police attachment and Social Welfare Department attachment are two areas you should focus onPuducherry->Training is highly structured; an elaborate training schedule is prepared and adhered to->Interaction to the maximum extent possible with field functionaries of various departments should be your priority2. ANDHRA PRADESHFirst Impressions and Working Environment->General working environment is good in Andhra and Rayalseema regions. All records are properly maintained in the coastal districts->It is not so good in Telengana region (Proper land records are notrecorded and jamabandis are not done in the last three years here)->People are generally aware of their rights and lawsTraining Structure and Focus Areas->Training is structured and participatory->The following attachments should not be missed: 1)PD DRDA 2) PD DWMA, 3)DPO 4) CEO 5)ZP 6)Municipal Commissioner 7) VRO, RI and MRO 8) DM&HO 9) Agriculture JD->Rest of the attachments like DIC, Animal Husbandry, JD, DEO, DCO etc. can be done in one or two days3. ASSAM-MEGHALAYAFirst Impressions and Working Environment->We went without any prejudices and enjoyed our training->Working environment is good, though it is quite casual and people are generally friendly->Bureaucracy is cohesive and socio-economic conditions are quite similar to those in states like UP and Bihar->The pace of work is slow->Files are invariably put up by assistants in AssameseTraining Structure and Focus Areas->There is a well-structured training programme in the cadre, though it is ultimately the DC who decides the specific training inputs. Hence do whatever he/she wants you to do->The schedule for attachments, though very tight, can prove to be a good guide about what to look out for in each attachment. If time is not a constraint, try and go through relevant files during each attachment.->Normally, independent SDO(Civil) charge is not given; you can expect charge as Circle Officer->Do not miss attachments with District Jail, SP and Police->Since bifurcation of Assam and Meghalaya officers is done only at the end of district training, officers allotted to Meghalaya miss out on detailed exposure to the state, beyond the common one month Meghalaya attachment4. BIHARFirst Impressions and Working Environment->First impression is that it’s not a good cadre-there is excessive political interference. People were also apprehensive about our safety. After spending one year in the district, one realises that the cadre is good and people have a lot of faith and respect for an IAS officer->Working environment is good->Officers have a substantial degree of autonomy->Systems are well entrenched->Unlike other capital cities, Patna qualifies as a good training district (thanks to the efforts of Dr. B. Rajendra, IAS, 1995 batch) as long as you are prepared to be proactiveTraining Structure and Focus Areas->Attend all the meetings conducted by the DM atleast once->Handle some of the files in the sections during attachments. Read the Citizen’s charter of each section->Do your court work properly. Ensure that you handle atleast oneencroachment and one certificate case->Independent charge as BDO is the highlight. Make the most of it->Read the basic State Acts and guidelines->Go through the Dak in the office religiously->The treasury training however, is excessively long and the duration can be easily reduced5. CHATTISGARHFirst Impressions and Working Environment->There were loads of apprehensions to start with- Naxalism, backwardness, poverty, etc. Most of them proved to be unfounded at the end of the year. Naxalism is an issue, but one gets used to it->There is immense to scope to do welfare work for the tribals->The hierarchy is strict and formal.->Since there is a paucity of officers, be prepared to hold substantial independent charges (including that of SDM) during probation itself->It is as good or as bad as any mainland north Indian cadre. The legacy of Madhya Pradesh continues->Getting trained in the capital (Raipur) is problematic as nobody has timeTraining Structure and Focus Areas->Training is not well structured; the ATI doesn’t have much of a role->Do not miss out on revenue training, independent charges as prescribed, meetings called by the Collector (especially Time Limit meetings)->It would be advisable to complete all attachments to get a holistic view of the administrative setup->Be prepared for independent charges during the second half of your training6. GUJARATFirst Impressions and Working Environment->‘Simplicity’ of the people is the first thing that strikes you-the people are welcoming and friendly->Systematic and well-set administrative structure->Officer-oriented functioning with a large multi-tasking burden formally placed on all Class-I officers->The hierarchy is not very strict and rigid. From the seniormost to the junior most levels, there is a lot of interaction and seniors are very accessible and open to problems and concerns of the juniors. It is in essence a very informal cadre->Corporate style of functioning with parts of the office starting by 9 and going on till night time->A large number of development theme based functions and festivals are run by government in the form of mahotsavs and yatras.->Close links exist between administration and corporate world->Officers are highly respected by and also in turn give respect to MLAs, MPs and Ministers->District Administration is an event management set up in nature which also ‘administers’.->Accommodation at ATI is reasonably good with all creature comforts provided for by Government standards. However, the food is oily and the staff is scarce leading to unreturned calls for tea or other such essentialsTraining Structure and Focus Areas->Language grasp and understanding revenue and law and order issues from SDM perspective is a must do.->Understanding village forms is essential->All independent charges must be exercised earnestly as they are great learning opportunities->One should maintain a low profile and good relationships with all officers in district of All India and State Services as far as possible.->One should never throw weight around unless actually pushed to the brink. In Gujarat, humility is highly respected and the culture is that of getting respect only if one gives it to any other person irrespective of any other criteria.->All attachments are not useful unless the officer one is attached with is interested in training. So, after a few days, if it is obvious that the attachment is giving no results, one can try to involve oneself in something more productive with the permission of the collector.7. HARYANAFirst Impressions and Working Environment->First impressions were good and only kept improving during training->Positive work environment->Officers from other states are respected and seen as more impartial->Camp office culture is prevalent->The cadre is really appreciative of good work.->Being a small cadre, there is a close-knit relationship between seniors and juniors in the service.->The working of the bureaucracy has a tendency to revolve around the Chief Minister->Since routine work is not very pressing, newer initiatives that are off the beaten track can be taken up->The cadre also encourages officers to go on training programsTraining Structure and Focus Areas->Training at HIPA is not very productive.->Inputs on local laws and the Haryana Darshan are very good; inputs on Haryana are inadequate->Several independent charges are given. Do ask for a month of SDO (Civil) charge->Focus on your revenue training->Get week long attachments with other departments reduced to a day or two->Try and work on some independent project8. HIMACHAL PRADESH(By Shainamol A)First Impressions and Working Environment->I was told by seniors that HP is a very peaceful state, an informal cadre with a good working environment and very little political interference. Everything except the last was proved to be correct. There is a lot of political interference, however criminalization of politics has yet not happened.->There are lots of areas in which you can work without any interference from outside agencies. However, if you disturb anyone’s vested interest, you will start getting calls from aboveTraining Structure and Focus Areas->The training program is very well-structured in Kangra, since it is a traditional training district9. JAMMU & KASHMIR(By Yasha Mudgal)First Impressions and Working Environment->Since J&K is perceived as a negative cadre I was a little apprehensive about it initially but at the same time, I was quite excited to go and see for myself as to what are the conditions prevalent in the cadre. It is a good cadre perceived negatively, and the perceived threat to life and security is exaggerated.->Conditions are quite normal now in most of the areas. Like every other cadre it has its own positive and negative aspects. Well, does that sound rhetorical…? Ok. Let me put it this way : on a scale of 0 to 10 where 0 is the worst cadre and 10 being the best I would not rate J&K as 0 or 10 but somewhere close to 6.5 to 7.->The district was also good but being a new district I got less exposure of certain things.Training Structure and Focus Areas->Do all attachments. I learnt a lot on almost every attachment.->The SICOP and SIDCO attachments are very long. Complete them quickly and take a trip home. It will be refreshing.->While in your district, try to visit the office of the PWD and PHE Ex. En. Learn about their work. This will help when you take up your SDM charge.10. JHARKHAND(By Shuchi Tyagi)First Impressions and Working Environment->Naxal infested state but with immense potential->Good working conditions->Staff are generally obedient and co-operativeTraining Structure and Focus Areas->There is a systematic training structure followed in the state that covers all the important aspects->The ATI training is divided into two phases; the first phase is for seven weeks and the second phase is for four weeks which is held later on during district training->The revenue training component is very important; so pay more attention to it->Jharkand Darshan is an enjoyable experience; make the most of it11. KARNATAKAFirst Impressions and Working Environment->It was a mix of eager anticipation and apprehensions. However, the experience was very positive->The working environment and the cadre management systems are fairly good->The ‘minutes system’ prevails in the district, which is given by people’s representatives recommending actions to a particular official within their area of jurisdiction. MLAs are very powerful->There are different types of land records maintenance in Bombay, Karnataka, Hyderabad and Old Mysore areas->Corruption and nepotism are rampant at the lower rungsTraining Structure and Focus Areas->ATI training is well structured->Good exposure to all departments->Take the Tehsildar charge seriously and learn how Taluk offices function.->Closely observe the working of the DC office12. KERALAFirst Impressions and Working Environment->Apprehensions about the cadre are misplaced->Cadre-seniors are helpful and friendly->IAS officers command a lot of respect->Kerala Society places a high premium on education and knowledge and working with an educated, aware public is a good experience->An egalitarian society that is as removed from a feudalistic and ‘mai-baap’ administrative culture as possible; quite similar to a western setting.-Near informal behaviour of Chief Minister, Ministers and all seniorofficersTraining Structure and Focus Areas->Training structure is highly flexible, which at times is a dampener->Training is structured around a series of Government Orders (GOs)->Be fully involved in the Collectorate attachment->Attend the meetings of other departments called by the Collector->The ‘revenue’ part is a must do, the ‘panchayat’ part is a let-go.13. MADHYA PRADESHFirst Impressions and Working Environment->A Hindi belt state with an eclectic cultural mix->Neither too formal nor too informal->Even insiders may have to do some coping up.->Outsiders and insiders given an equal opportunity to prove their mettle->Probationer is treated like the “Collector’s child.” Hence behave like one.Training Structure and Focus Areas->Take your ATI training seriously. It will help you during your stint in the district->Accept independent charge of SDM etc. only after completing your assignments->Draw up a schedule for attachments to various departments in the district in consultation with the Collector->Keep 2-3 days aside for revenue courts every week14. MAHARASHTRAFirst Impressions and Working Environment->The positive first impressions have only been enhanced during the course of training->One of the most professional cadres with a development oriented bureaucracy->Formal working style->Political interface is positive and cordial->Good practices like maintaining monthly diaries and structured tour programmes exist->People are helpful and listen to you patiently->Knowledge of laws is a pre-requisite in this cadre->There are regional variations: Marathwada presents certain challenges of an underdeveloped state; in Western Maharashtra work is well structured and there is an emphasis on timeliness; Vidarbha has a system of thorough file notings.Training Structure and Focus Areas->The five weeks of ATI training at Yashada are very systematic andstructured->There is a lot of focus on procedural aspects of legal matters and land records15. MANIPURFirst Impressions and Working Environment->We were value neutral towards the cadre before we reached Imphal and then to the district Chandel. The initial three week training in the ATI (Imphal) was frustrating. We started becoming critical especially when, in spite of constant pursuance, we did not get basic facilities like accommodation. Once we reached to the district and met our DC and the SDO we started accepting that things were not in order and survival was the biggest instinct.->After sometime, the level of expectations went down and we started enjoying small things like bonfire by the river side, fishing and visit to the villages. Actually, things started improving over time.->By the end of District Training, after we were given independent charge, we started liking the place and the work in spite of knowing that the exposure we were getting was negligible.->The working in the cadre is based completely on 'jugad' technology and there are no set patterns.->Law and rule books are less useful in comparison to common sense. However, openness, honesty, high moral integrity and the approach of cultural relativism can be valuable assets for the IAS officersTraining Structure and Focus Areas->Chandel, the district where we were undergoing training is very small and infrastructure is very limited. There is no existing structure for probationers and that’s why we faced lots of problems. Situation is different in other districts like Ukhrul and Senapati where probationers go traditionally.->There is no structured training. You will learn as much as your DC takes interest.->Attachments with other departments are hardly of any use.->For outsiders, adapting to the existing local constraints is the biggest thing.16. NAGALANDFirst Impressions and Working Environment->Initial reservations will be short-lived->Nagaland has an egalitarian society, hence respect all your subordinates->The working style in the state is casual.Training Structure and Focus Areas->There is no organised training structure in the cadre.->Ensure that you get a week long Secretariat Attachment (in Kohima)->Take personal interest in organising a Revenue Training in Dimapur17. ORISSAFirst Impressions and Working Environment->Initial impression was that of a poor tribal state with low infrastructure, but it changed over the training period. Industrialization is taking place at a good pace.->Great regional variations. A curious mixture of abject poor and super rich.->People are simple natured and religious.->At the field level, the Collector has a lot of importance; he looks after development too as the ZP culture is not dominant.->Work culture wise, subordinates are not very keen on taking initiative. You need to continuously monitor any project/assignment to ensure success. However the people are obedient.->Least interference from the current political dispensation.->IAS commands a lot of respect in the State.Training Structure and Focus Areas->Training is very well structured. DG, GAA (Gopabandhu Academy of Administration) has the authority to allot the districts.->Training at GAA is not very productive. You need to assert your needs at the academy else you won’t be looked after properly.->Independent BDO charge is a great opportunity.->Focus on your revenue training.->Judiciary charge as Spl Judicial Magistrate is a great opportunity to see the judiciary from within. Interact a lot with the local advocates.->Try and work on some independent project.->Closely watch and get involved in VIP visits.18. PUNJABFirst Impressions and Working Environment->Though first impressions were good, there was a feeling that very little development work at the grass root level can be done in the state. Later, we realised that though the infrastructure is in place, there is a long way to go in the social sector.->Punjab has plateaued in its course of development; therefore there is a lot of scope for innovative thinking->General working environment is laid back possibly because the ‘public pressure’ to perform is quite low.->Since it is a small cadre, almost all officers know each other and this makes it very hospitable. Both officers and people are generally warm and welcoming->There is a shortage of staff in almost all the districts. In newly created districts, the staff is inexperienced and untrained.->Lots of conventional practices prevail in the cadre, sometimes overriding rules and regulationsTraining Structure and Focus Areas->Training is unstructured. The DC decides what the probationer is to do. Probationers of the same batch do different things and have different attachments at a single point in time.->You can work out a training schedule for yourself in consultation with the DC and the Establishment Branch->An important attachment that you should not miss is with the DFSC, as the procurement process is very important in Punjab19. RAJASTHANFirst Impressions and Working Environment->Rajasthan is a well-governed state and a good cadre. Systems are in place->The administration-people interface is cordial and free->Informal relationship between juniors and seniors->Political pressures depend on the officer’s response->Though there is a general perception that Rajasthan is a ‘peaceful’ state, this is true only in comparison to states like UP. It certainly has its own share of law and order problemsTraining Structure and Focus Areas->Generally, the training schedule sent by the Academy is followed to a large extent.->Do not miss out on independent charge as SDO and court work->Make the most of the State Darshan->Complete your attachments on time20. SIKKIMFirst Impressions and Working Environment->Lack of inputs in the Academy on Sikkim specific issues may present problems->The work culture is non formal->State Civil Service Officers dominate the administrative setup->No special privileges accrue because of being in the IAS->One needs to be people-orientedTraining Structure and Focus Areas->Training is not structured properly because the ATI is non functional->No orientation is given and hence one learns on the job->Visit as many villages as you can->Try and get a grip on how things are done in Sikkim, which is verydifferent from what one gathers through the inputs given in the Academy->Independent charge is given to probationers21. TAMIL NADUFirst Impressions and Working Environment->Tamil Nadu is a good and welcoming cadre->Working environment is cordial->Probationers are appointed in conventional training districts->The administration is rule bound and less flexibleTraining Structure and Focus Areas->Well structured; however there is no ATI training->Do not miss out any component of training. You can adjust timings if need be->No independent charges given to probationers->Lots can be learned by involving fully in district administration and moving around with the DC->The span of the urban sector attachment is only for 2-3 days, which is insufficient22. TRIPURAFirst Impressions and Working Environment->We were told that Tripura is a ‘well-administered’ state; we realised that it is ‘over-administered’->Airport is bang on the Bangladesh border-portent of things to come!->Lack of respect amongst the masses-especially the Bengalis. Tribals still hold an IAS officer in high esteem->IAS tag doesn’t generally work->SCS officers are favoured->Hyper politicized state which makes life tough for an IAS officerTraining Structure and Focus Areas->Structure exists on paper but not in practice->Almost all attachments lacked content. The only exception was the SDM and BDO attachment->Independent charge as a BDO is the most important part of the district training. Ensure that you convince your DM to give it to you early and for a substantial period, say 3 months->Try as many CrPC and other cases as an Executive Magistrate as possible, ask your SDM to transfer cases to you in the very beginning23. UTTARAKHANDFirst Impressions and Working Environment->The working environment is very similar to what is there in Uttar Pradesh; the legacy continues in many ways.->Hindi language rules the files->Procrastination is often a virtue in the circumstances that exist->The working environment is relaxed->Support staff are experienced and reliable as they have exposure to the way things worked in the UP setup->Chidiya culture prevails ie. file pushingTraining Structure and Focus Areas->The training at the State ATI in Nainital takes up close to three months, and is too long.->The revenue and treasury training is for 14 days each; this again could be shortened.->You must try and arrange an attachment with the Forest Department since interface with forest-related issues is very common in the State. You must also gain insights into the forest laws, which is a neglected area.->Try and get some exposure to tourism (esp. spiritual tourism) andadventure sports, which are the unique opportunities in the State.->Another focus area can be disaster management24. UTTAR PRADESHFirst Impressions and Working Environment->The sheer size and diversity of the state is mind boggling. Especially for an outsider, it seems like “Yeh kahan aa gaye hum!”->It’s a state with huge challenges and even greater opportunities->An IAS officer is treated like a ‘king’/’queen’->The administration is DM centric in what is still a feudal state. DM is the de facto king/queen of the district->Probationer is considered to be the DM’s prodigy->There is a sharp contrast in the working environment of Western and Eastern UP. The West fares better because of higher income levels and better social parameters->A civil services week is held annually which brings together the entire galaxy of IAS officers in the state-from the Chief Secretary to the probationer-for formal and informal interactions->Seniors are extremely supportiveTraining Structure and Focus Areas->No structured training in the field, depends on the DM->The highlight of the course remains the UP darshan->The 3 month training in the Lucknow ATI is grossly underutilized, the duration could be lessened->One must attend all attachments in the Collectorate and with the line departments religiously and coax the officers into sharing their experiences->A week long training in the State Police Academy can be incorporated25. WEST BENGALFirst Impressions and Working Environment->First impression on being allotted West Bengal is that one is doomed. Take a deep breath, listen to the obituaries recited by your batch mates and get depressed->Now for the good news. West Bengal is much better than all this. It may not be the best but is certainly a better than average cadre->An IPS officer is better off than his IAS counterpart->People work when they have to but generally the work culture is poor->Offices start at 11:30 am and people start disappearing by 4:30 pm. Only the head of office remains (your personal orderly/peon will be the first to leave)Training Structure and Focus Areas->Apart from BDOship, no other independent charge is given->Industrial and agricultural attachments during ATI training are not of much use->State darshan should be incorporated in the training. Hopefully you will have this componentAll the best! Phew!!

If I am not allowed to send slow learners into a separate class, how can I not slow down the lessons for the rest?

i’ve been a bankkruptcy focused management consultant for over 36 yrs. if anyone feels your pain it’s me. i’ve encountered the more horrific adult/professional variation of your concern since i was a child. distance learning and tele-commute intervention will be your most helpful tool. as an instructor you’re able to clone not only you, but the many even possibly too minor educational building blocks required by judicious use of electronic c0-instruction, tutoring and mobile device optimization. my most strategic DC client’s a big shot in the religion sector, with a 4 y/o grandson—-as the sole heir to what counts in their religious faction. the 4 y/o’s a highly intelligent dictator and cruel severe manager. i suspect he’s a Trump supporter [seriously]. the selfishness he exhibits is among the more fascinating learning disruptions that i’ve been able to notice as common among failed enterprise operators. in this 4 y/o’s religious community women aren’t allowed to preach, minister, or own churches. at 4 he’s routinely seeking to occupy his grandfather’s large impressive seat.micro management in the educational sector’s become exponentially more plausible & affordable via smartwear and mobile communications platforms. you’ll learn to love the modern world after you’ve delegated the grunt work to the optimal co-instruction partners. i lived with the assistant to the head of NYC’s Board of Education in charge of special education for 6 years. if she had the tools at her disposal that you now have; and educational systems’ policies are forcing to be employed (back in the 1980’s) her scope of achievement in the real hard luck student concentrations would’ve been exponentially more fruitful. today the viewpoint of students becoming lost, or less productive is a much more laughable notion. home schooling is an excellent example of the cultural changeovers. younger people are accomplishing more within record setting intervals.the resources available to regions that are affluent are being more rapidly re-purposed and annexed to the less fortunate on unparalled levels at paces that boggle the mind. dumb, inept students and parents alike have access to more remedial resources than their high IQ peers of less than a decade ago. obviously there will be instructors and other power players who’re obscuring the practical advancements for their own agenda. i was hired by my own religious client’s construction factions to get his following portions of public school new building project assignments in the DC, Prince Georges County(Md) regions where a typical job of that type’s a $ 100M gig. when i encouraged the client to use their religious influence to build their own private schools under Lyndon B Johnson administration legislated incentives the idea was too fancy. the client’s type of literacy wouldn’t accept the advantages of privatization—-in that context.nonetheless, the control offered by (now) less than state-of-the-art standard household equipment and technology makes the education pipeline unlimited in width for those that are willing to use it [in the proper context]. i’m servicing a number of disabled focused educational initiatives in multiple markets. they tend to be tiny church owned academies and church accumulated resources adult education/trade schools, on through colleges. one-on-one instruction is far more plentiful as just one of the germinations of lower cost cellular & internet broadened deployment. one of my instructor clients is deploying a eyewear to even advance the monitoring and access of those failing individuals in more progressive manners, as an additional gateway toward social & educational advancement [as well as world safety].

Do you hold Trump responsible for the breach of the capitol?

This was Trump’s rally. He had been promoting it for weeks. I think some people have the impression that this was an impromptu group of MAGAs (technically, I think a large collection of MAGAs is called a “suicide.”) But it had been planned? Of course it was planned.About a week before the event, Trump started calling it a “march” rather than a rally. He had been coordinating with the “March For Trump” bus tour, which was set up by a PAC for several events between late November and mid December, apparently to gin up fights about the electoral college. The last one was in Washington DC, mostly attended by militant white nationalist groups, and fairly small. No Trump, no Love? But was Trump taking to Amy Kermer, the lady behind the March for Trump (weirdly, the trumpmarch . com web site was created at the end of August… I guess someone knew there would be marching). Kermer also ran the “Tea Party Express” organization about a decade ago, and she ran “TrumPAC” in 2016. Was there a connection? Of course there was.Mother Jones had investigated Amy Kremer’s current organization, “Women for America First,” back in 2019. This group is a 501(c)(4) “dark money” organization that by law can only have limited involvement in political activities. As with other Kremer PACs, most of the money that comes in goes to the people in charge of the PAC and, at least this year, to funding various Trump campaign activities. Women for America First is essentially part of Trump’s political operation. Much of the funding for the January 6th rally came from this group. There were other sponsors, mostly run by people who are in regular contact with Trump. This was coordinated.Trump’s old advisor and puppetmaster, Steven Bannon, has sponsored the “March for Trump” bus tour from the beginning. Bannon was in regular contact with Trump after the election, and used his podcast over a dozen times to promote the rally and push for Trump’s coup d’etat, featuring some of the other rally organizers. This included a podcast on January 4th featuring sponsor Kylie Jane Kremer. Bannon said “… the game is going to start on Capitol Hill. I think one of the most historic days in American history will be Wednesday.”Mike Lindell, the “My Pillow” guy, who has been a very large spreader of conspiracy theories about the election, including vastly wrong information about voting machines, lies that right wing media are currently being sued over by the voting machine companies (they can’t actually do what the pillow guy claims they did). He has also paid for much of the work of Trump’s “Fox News TV Lawyers,” Lin Wood and Sidney Powell.Charlie Kirk and his PAC, Turning Point Action. The main work of Turning Point Action has been a campaign to work around the new limits on propaganda and conspiracy theories put in place on social media, running a Russian-style pro-Trump propaganda campaign. Two days before the January 6 rally, Kirk tweeted that Turning Point Action was “Sending 80+ buses full of patriots to DC to fight for this president.” He deleted the tweet shortly after the violence broke out.A web site called “Wild Protest” — referencing Trump’s claim that “it will get wild” — appeared in the weeks prior to the rally, and vanished immediately afterwards. It told viewers “We the People must take to the US Capitol lawn and steps and tell Congress #DoNotCertify on #JAN6! Congress cannot certify this fraudulent Electoral College. Our presence in Washington D.C. will let Members of Congress know that we stand with Rep. Mo Brooks and his colleagues in the House of Representatives who will bravely object to the certification of the Electoral College.” The rally permit did not allow people to go to Capitol lawn or steps.Tea Party Patriots was another sponsor. This is yet another group that’s funded by donations and spends most of the money collected on various activities done by the founders. On January 6, Jenny Beth Martin, the co-founder of Tea Party Patriots, posted a photo of herself at the pre-attack rally and noted, “I am here at the Save America March to fight for President Trump. We will not allow them to steal this election!” Sometime after the mob had ransacked the Capitol, the Tea Party Patriots were removed from the list of sponsors on the March for Trump’s website.Another Kremer organization, “Women for Trump” had obtained the permit for the rally, under the name “Kylie Jane Kremer,” Amy Kremer’s daughter. Kremer was one of the warm-up speakers prior to the Trump rally, and encouraged the crowd “We are not going to back down, are we? Keep up the fight!”Maybe it’s just me, but if every organization backing a rally is suggesting it’s a “fight,” and then there’s actually a fight, that’s not a surprise. That’s expected behavior. That’s what they were recruiting in their month-long online promotions of the event. From these various supporters, it’s obvious their plan was always to march down to the Capitol, despite this not being included in the mainstream ads for the event. And this was clearly coordinated with Trump, as he made that same recommendation, though nothing in the “Save America Rally” ad copy said anything about going to the Capitol. They actually couldn’t put that in print, given that they had no legal clearance to be at the Capitol. But clearly, Trump and many of the rallygoers understood what was going to happen. And the rest were urged on.So, it’s not clear just what was intended, but put together “march to the Capitol stairs” and “fight” and it doesn’t take Kreskin to figure out what’s going to be on many of those folks minds. For … just what, exactly? What did they hope to gain? I think they shut down the EC vote tally by about four hours, sure. But they also put a little fear into the Republicans and just who they were supporting. Some of the fact-challenged in Congress had planned to contest up to ten states. But the Senators backed off a bit, and only Arizona and Pennsylvania were taken to conference. And McConnell didn’t even allow discussion. But at least some of the would-be Insurrectionists had far darker plans. There’s no proof yet that Trump was aware, but as we’ll see, there had been organization on-line not simply storm the Capitol, but to take prisoners and perhaps even run mock “trials.” That’s the kind of thing being investigated by the FBI at this very moment. More to follow, I’m sure.Anyway, once they decided it was a march, Trump was tweeting videos promoting it a couple of times a day for at least a week. I guess we may never know just when Trump knew that he’d be calling for a march to the Capitol, but well before the event began. At He certainly knew he’d be calling for a march by the time he started getting the graphics done. He had been tweeting for at least a month and talking to the MAGAs and anyone else who would listen, telling them to come to Washington on the 6th, telling all who would listen “Be there. Will be Wild”.It’s also curious that, while they were saying “march” all this time, the permit granted by the Parks Department was for a rally at the Ellipse, only. They did not have permission for a march, and they did not have permission to be anywhere near the Capitol building or grounds. Nor could they have been granted that permission, since, of course, the Capitol building was a closed, secure environment that day. Not open to the public. He had a speaking platform set up for the rally on the Ellipse, a 52-acre park between the White House and the Washington Monument, roughly 2 miles from the Capitol building. This was a fairly elaborate setup, not something they tossed together. Yeah, that’s the White House in the background… you’re looking at it across the South Lawn.Obviously it had been planned as a march for enough time to get all the artwork printed up. But make no mistake, this was Trump’s event. He was there in person, behind his UL 752 Level 8 glass shield (well, hey, would you trust these guys?), and gave his typical rally speech. He aired his grievances, the utter unfairness of it all (woe is me!) He railed on about Mike Pence not doing his bidding (and, of course, breaking his oath to the Constitution, but nothing but Trump matters to Trump). He threatened Congresspeople who also might not do his bidding. He repeated his usual lies: the timely ones, requests from the audience, his Greatest Hits, and of course, more unfairness. In usual Trump rally style, Uday was there, along with most of the regulars from Trump’s Wack-Pack. Uday proceeded to complain about transgender athletes — not exactly the message of the day — and to threaten to “primary” Republican Congressfolk who didn’t participate in Trump’s coup d’etat attempt.Junior’s girlfriend, “Screaming” Kimberly Guilfoyle was there — she’s a standard member of the Trump Wack-Pack.Qusay was there too. He said pretty much the same things as his brother, extorting Congress with threats of primary challenges or something like that. It took me ages to find a photo of this guy — he rarely gets much press coverage, almost as if he’s redundant. But oddly enough, the Trumps could stick around and cause damage. Donald Trump has brought in nearly $500 million in money to “defend the election” and, while very little was actually spent on legal challenges, and about 1/4 went to the RNC, the vast bulk of the money went to Trump’s Leadership PAC. Trump can spend that almost any way he likes, including in support of other campaigns. So it’s a credible threat… not that extortion isn’t wrong even if the threat is empty.Qusay’s wife (unlike his brother, he hasn’t dumped his wife yet) was there… I’m not sure she’s a regular member of Trump’s Wack-Pack, but, as I’m trying to illustrate here, this was as big as any standard Trump rally. They apparently want her to run for the Senate in South Carolina…. is carpetbagging still a thing? As usual these days, Crazy Rudy Giuliani got to speak for awhile, and went even further, saying about Trump’s false claims of voter fraud, "If we’re wrong, we will be made fools of. But if we’re right, a lot of them will go to jail. So let’s have trial by combat.” I guess some of the MAGAs took that to heart.None of the printed materials or graphics I found said anything about where the march was going, though you could kind of figure they weren’t just going to the Smithsonian for a little education. Trump was the figurehead, and he made it a march on the Capitol. Trump spoke, calling the legitimate outcome of the election “this egregious assault on our democracy.” He continued: “After this, we're going to walk down, and I'll be there with you. We're going to walk down to the Capitol. We are going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women, and we are probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them — because you will never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength, and you have to be strong.” And “If you don't fight like hell you're not going to have a country anymore.”So we have a standard Trump rally, the complete cast of Trump Wack-Pack speakers, funding by a bunch of Trump allies… so this is a Trump event, correct? I mean, unless there was a child in a cage or high ranking political official being bribed on-stage, you couldn’t get much Trumpier. Of course, after a complete clusterfuck like the way this rally/march turned out, you naturally find all of the cockroaches involved scrambling as fast as they can once the lights are on.The Trump Campaign’s official statement: they “did not organize, operate or finance the event.” No campaign staff members were involved in the organization or operation of the rally, according to the statement. It said that if any former employees or independent contractors for the campaign took part, “they did not do so at the direction of the Trump campaign.” Hmmm… any time Trump people say a thing mostly didn’t happen, you’re being told that it did happen…. so who might those people be?Megan Powers, the Director of Operations for the Trump Campaign as of January 2021 was also listed as one of the Operations Managers on the permit for the January 6 rally. The paperwork was, of course, for a rally at the Ellipse, not for a march to the Capitol, despite the wording on all of the printed literature.Carolyn Wren, who was paid $20,000/month as National Finance Consultant for Trump Victory (a joint fundraising platform between the Trump Campaign and the RNC) was listed as a VIP Advisor on the rally permit. After the insurrection, Wren locked her Twitter account, blocked reporters, and otherwise scrambled to clean her online profile of tweets and post promoting the rally.Maggie Mulvaney, niece of former Trump aide and then special envoy to Northern Ireland Mick Mulvaney, was paid $2,500 per week by the Trump Campaign as Director of Finance Operations, was listed on the rally permit as the VIP Lead. Mick Mulvaney quit his post a day after the insurrection.Trump allies Roger Stone, Stephen Bannon, and disgraced former Lt. General Michael Flynn participated in multiple events promoting the January 6th rally as a “Stop the Steal” event. Flynn and Stone had both been recently pardoned by Trump. Trump was also known to have met several times with Flynn over the same time period, with Flynn suggesting the use of Martial Law and the Military to overthrow the will of the people in the 2020 election.Flynn, specifically, had told Trump followers at rallies since mid-December that they would “need to be fearless as Americans,” that they had reached a “crucible moment .. there has to be sacrifice,” and “We’re in a battle … for the heart and soul of the country. We will win.”Mike Lindell, the “My Pillow Guy” and, as mentioned, a sponsor of the rally, was known to regularly meet in-person with Trump. He met again with Trump after the insurrection, on January 11, apparently there, according to photos of the notes he was carrying, to persuade Trump to use Martial Law and the Military to stage a coup d’etat and keep himself in power. I think I’ll stick with my non-lumpy, non-fascist memory foam pillow!Tim Unes, president of the company Event Strategies, was the rally’s Stage Manager. He’s the same guy the Trump Campaign has used for rallies, earning $1.2 million in 2020 for similar services at “officially Trump” Trump rallies. Another Event Strategies employee, Justin Caporale, was listed as Project Manager for the ralloy. He had also been a top aide for Melania Trump, paid $3,750/week through most of 2020.Kimberly Fletcher is president of Moms for America, another sponsor of the rally. She hadn’t been informed of the depth of Trump’s involvement until January 1, and still wasn’t prepared. She was quoted: "When I got there and I saw the size of the stage and everything, I'm like, 'Wow, we couldn't possibly have afforded that.’ It was a big stage. It was a very professional stage. I don't know who was in the background or who put it together or anything."Hanna Salem, three-year senior White House press aide responsible for “executing the media strategy for President Trump’s most high-profile events” was the rally’s Operations Manager for Logistics and Communications. In short, there’s no discernable difference between this rally and any normal Trump campaign rally of the past: same sponsors, same people. You sort of have to wonder, if this was just a rally that got out of control, why this was run pretty exactly the same as any other Trump Campaign rally other than it being directly run on paper by the Trump Campaign. Did the Trump Campaign just take possession of an already-planned rally? Well, that’s possible, but following the information trail, Trump himself had been involved in this rally since at least early December. And it had always been on the “TrumpMarch” schedule. Or was it just a handy way of throwing in a little on-paper distance based on what they had in mind for the day?Trump, of course, lied about actually going with them in person. But he did continue with tweets to the crowd. He continued to egg them on, to praise them.. in fact, that’s a big part of why Trump’s Twitter account was blocks — he was an active participant in the Insurrection, even if he didn’t actually go into the Capitol himself. Also, this obviously didn’t happen in a vacuum. Trump had been building resentment in these people for two months, claiming every day that there was election fraud, etc. Trump spread wild Qanon-sourced conspiracy theories about voting machines… in fact, throughout 2020, Donald J. Trump was the primary spreader of conspiracy theories in the United States (and you though he just spread COVID-19!) Many of them came expecting action because they had been told to fight back, told to never give up, told their country was being stolen, told it would “get wild,” by Trump, for 64 straight days! Trump reads the backwaters of the Internet where the conspiracy theorists hang out. He hears them on Twitter, etc. I believe he knew exactly what would happen, and that’s just what he wanted.Trump loaded the gun, pointed the gun, and pulled the trigger. No, he wasn’t the bullet. But he did foment the first Insurrection in the USA in modern times. A straight-up act of domestic terrorism. At least five people dead: one insurrectionist shot, one trampled by the crowd, two died of medical problems, and one Capitol Policeman, hit by the terrorists with a fire extinguisher, died from his injuries on Thursday Night.Multiple reports tell us that Trump enjoyed the invasion of the Capitol. Well before being told by his lawyers to ask the insurrectionists to leave, Trump had told Lindsey Graham “they’re allies.”Here’s noted wack-a-doodle Jacob Chansley (aka Jake Angeli) and a bunch of others in the Capitol building. The self-described “Qanon Shaman” turned himself into the FBI in the week following the siege, telling the agent that he and other “patriots” had come from Arizona at the request of the President that all “patriots” come to D.C. on January 6th. He had left a threatening note to Mike Pence, and admitted to authorities that he had planned “to capture and assassinate elected officials.” Chansley had been kicked out of the Navy fifteen years ago for refusing to get an anthrax vaccine, and apparently believes he’s an alien. Yes, authorities suspect mental illness and drug use, but as comical as the guy looks, he’s dangerous. So far, a grand jury has charged this numbnut with civil disorder, obstruction of an official proceeding, violent entry and disorderly conduct in a Capitol building, demonstrating in a Capitol building, entering and remaining in a restricted building, and violent entry and disorderly conduct in a restricted building. There could be more on the way.And this is the type of guy who responded to Trump’s call to Washington. Trump knew this. He knew who he was calling to DC. People well inside the bubble of conspiracy theories, consuming a steady mental diet of Trump’s lies and other craziness for years now. They’re not contemplating their future, but perhaps they ought to be. Last summer, Trump signed an executive order that makes this sort of thing punishable by up to ten years in Federal Prison. These guys apparently want to be identified and arrested. Either that or the insurrectionists are living in a pre-COVID, pre-cameras-everywhere world of their own imaginations. Because these no mask guys are rapidly being identified, their social media profiles analyzed, and charges are being drawn up, at the DC level, but probably also the Federal level. This being the 21st Century and most Americans just not all that okay with an armed insurrection in the Capitol, the magical powers of crowdsourcing have been working to dox as many of these terrorists as possible. There’s an on-going project on Instagram, homegrownterrorists, which is helping with this doxing effort. And you can bet the FBI and other law enforcement agencies are all over this as well. It’s been reported that they were granted broad social media access for investigating these crimes.Trump later put out a video message telling the insurrectionists that “we love you, you’re very special”… it was fairly quickly pulled from Twitter, along with other messages in support of the terrorists, then Facebook, and Trump’s social media accounts were locked down. Sadly, well after all the damage had been done.I do have some lingering questions. You should too. For one, where was the National Guard in all of this? Okay, they did show up, but of course, they have to be invited, they can’t just look out, see an insurrection, and decide to drop and by for a closer look. Trump was too busy supporting the MAGAs online to get involved with protecting Congress. In fact, the tweet cloud around this, which was already made available to the authorities, along with Facebook, Instagram, and other social media, might be pretty damning, not just for Trump but all involved. It’s also clear that many of these MAGAs came quite prepared: guns, zip-ties, other items they could and did use as weapons. They also seemed to have a good understanding of the layout of the Capitol. They found prominent officials’ offices, even those not well market. Heck, they even assembled a gallows outside of the Capitol, apparently where at least some of them had hoped to hang Mike Pence. Capitol assault a more sinister attack than first appeared. It was Pence who called in the Guard, and it apparently took a little while, as they weren’t standing ready waiting for the call. Why not? Again, it’s awfully hard to fight back terrorists when your leader is actually on their side. And what happened to the DC Capitol Police? They were posted on-site, they were the go-to first responders anyway. And yet, there are videos of them opening gates for the crowds, taking selfies with them, etc. It’s a well known fact that the overwhelming instances of terrorism in the USA is by far right groups. It’s well known that Trump’s very popular with far right groups, and people often show up to his rallies carrying weapons. There were dozens of articles in news journals warning of the likelihood of violence among this crowd.
