PDF Editor FAQ

Are there any examples of widespread voter fraud?

Widespread voter fraud? No, and it has been researched by groups explicitly looking for it.In fact, after the 2016 election Trump’s administration hired a group of data analysts to procure public data from each state to determine how prevalent voter fraud was. They did a pretty poor job of analyzing the data, considering their conclusions left plenty of room for error and circumstance - and only procured documents from 22 states.Their conclusion was that as many as 800 voters in Florida committed voter fraud. The remaining 21 states had approximately 200 voters each that committed fraud in each state. They weren’t able to confirm that those votes were actually fraudulent, because they didn’t compare social security numbers, date of birth, change of address forms, or any other identifying information beyond name and birth year. And to think that there’s not that many people (out of a population of 327.2 million) with the same name born in the same year is pretty ridiculous. On the other hand, there are plenty of examples of election fraud - ballots being tampered with by polling officials (most recently in SC), limited voting booths or limited number of polling locations in districts with a particular political sway (most recently in GA), early (unannounced) cutoffs for voter registrations again somewhat localized to districts with a particular political sway (most recently in FL), poorly administered roster purges (in nearly a dozen states), and the list goes on. And all of the above mentioned election fraud examples were just this past election during the mid-terms.

What would you change about the processes or design of the US government?

How long have you got? :)Make the constitution WAY easier to amend. Perhaps required amendments to address constitutionality questions raised by the Supreme Court.Make laws subject to Supreme Court rulings without having actually been violated (right now plaintiffs have to bring a case to the SC, which often results in a decades-long delay between the passage and abolition of an unconstitutional law)Radical overhaul of the campaign finance system. Equal time on various forms of media, no additional spending by candidates, disclosure of all donors via all methods (no loopholes). Money raised by losers and not spent would go back to donors. Money raised by winners would go into the general fund.A “simple” version of all bills would have to be prepared prior to submission to the floor of the house or senate. This version would have to have estimated costs or earnings, breakdowns of where that money was going, where it came from, timelines, etc. This version would be posted online and fact checked by an independent third party organization.Online voting and automatic voter registration. We've somehow figured out how to send our credit card information online to Amazon with it only rarely getting stolen. Don't tell me we can't figure out a solution for voting.End gerrymandering. In fact, end districts entirely. State representatives run for the entire state, voters can vote for as many as they like, up to the total amount of legislators for their state. So, for example, if you live in Michigan, you could vote for up to 16 state reps. The days of the regional representative being important were shredded by gerrymandering anyway.Transparency in the budget. Every nickel spent accounted for. Every nickel earned tallied. You can say “secret military budget item”. That's fine. But it gets $50 million or whatever - no money simply flowing into a hole of an airplane that will never see service, etc.2nd amendment altered to mean what it always actually meant: military service people get guns. Everyone else, no. Sorry gun folks, but you're killing too many humans. Your rights don't exceed the right to safety for the tens of thousands of slaughtered humans. We did the experiment, and guns are just too dangerous.Decriminalization of drug use, and a real effort to eradicate hard drug supply. If there was no heroin, there would be no heroin addicts. But somehow a drug made from a plant in Afghanistan makes its way to Detroit and kills kids. If we wanted to stop this, we could. So spend the money you currently spend imprisoning users (and maybe even sellers) and go after the supply. I seem to recall the coca leaves and opium poppies are flammable. Apparently Afghanistan really did have weapons of mass destruction. They were just flowers.Education funding would stop being a complete joke and become what nations who really value education actually do: raise serious money, spend it on schools and communities that are in trouble, and don't stop working until the gaps are closed. Then, raise the bar for everyone in a way that empowers students and teachers and parents instead of vilifying them.I could probably go on for days but that's enough for now.

What is the issue with voter ID laws in the US? Why can Americans not use their normal IDs to vote?

American’s can use their normal government-issued IDs to vote, if they have one.The United States does not have a national ID card, and in years past when state IDs were less necessary, the only common ID was a drivers license. Particularly in poor rural areas, many people didn’t have a driver’s license, or perhaps only the husband in the family had one. Nowadays, significant number of young people 17–24 lack ID.And so millions of Americans don’t have an ID.The argument against voter ID laws is that it disenfranchises some people and creates an unreasonable impediment for others. The elderly may not have birth certificates. Sometimes putting together the documentation necessary to get an ID is difficult or impossible. It takes time and travel. It may require hiring an attorney. The other argument is that it discriminates against certain groups. The political debate arises because the eligible voter without an ID is more likely to vote Democratic than Republican. White people (5%) are more likely to have ID than black people (13%). Lower income people are less likely to have ID than those more well off. Young voters are less likely to have ID than older. The controversy also feeds on the discredited claim that lots of undocumented immigrants vote, and vote for Democrats. So that’s what the deal is about voter ID.For background information see: http://www.projectvote.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/AMERICANS-WITH-PHOTO-ID-Research-Memo-February-2015.pdf{Moved from my comment into the answer}One of the voter suppression tactics in some states is to close DMV offices in some locations, or limit their hours, making it harder to for some groups travel to them or to accommodate a work schedule. Alabama did that (As it turns out ... Bentley's driver's license closures were racial, after all). In my state of South Carolina the ID is $5, not a lot, but not free. And if you could get to the office when it was open, you might have to wait in line for an hour to get served (at least around here). The SC State Elections Commission issues a free photo ID only valid for voting, but again you might have to travel an hour, after finding a ride, since public transportation around here is almost non-existent. And the Elections Commission requires documentation before they will issue the ID.To get a DMV photo ID in my state requires originals for:Proof of identity (birth certificate or unexpired passport)Proof of SSN (card or W2)Two proofs of current addressProof of complete name change history (e.g. marriage license)So how do you get a social security card? SSA wants proof of identity—a state ID or passport. If your social security card doesn’t match your birth certificate, in my county you have to travel to a different government building from voter registration to get a copy of your marriage license ($15 I think, and they’re going to want ID before they give it to you). And a birth certificate? To get one of those in my state requires: “A valid government, school or employer issued photo ID (photocopy of one).”It’s not impossible, but it discourages people, which I think is the intent.
