PDF Editor FAQ

What are some really good satanic bands that aren't metal?

I’m not really an expert, but the majority of satanic bands are heavy metal, particularly Black Metal and occasionally Death Metal. There are bands outside of metal that are Satanists. If you like classical and jazz you might want to listen to the ol’ Black Pope himself Anton LaVey, the author of the Satanic Bible and several additional companion books, and founder, High Priest, and absolute leader of The Church of Satan.LaVey was a musical prodigy who composed music and played multiple instruments, frequently playing piano, organ, and keyboards for this album and to entertain friends. He released two albums both under his full name of Anton Szandor LaVey, The Satanic Mass, was a spoken word performance of him reading selections from his then still unpublished Satanic Bible. He then released a selection of music featuring his own musicianship and frequently with friends and family on vocals called, Satan Takes A Holiday. It’s a weird psychedelic Jazz record that is a mixture of avant-garde, sinister, cute, weird, oddly poppy, and yet accessible and kind of delightful. Like the man himself it’s urbane, friendly, and more than a little frightening. In terms of something more conventional but every bit as Devilish. The band Coven formed in Chicago in 1967 as a Psychedelic and folk-rock group led by bewitching frontwoman Jinx Dawson. In 1969 they released their debut album, Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls. The lead track in this album, ironically is titled “Black Sabbath”. They would beat the legendary British metal Gods by about 4 months with their release in October of 1969, and the self-titled debut of Black Sabbath with the eponymous lead track coming out in February of 1970. This album caused an odd music urban legend claiming that Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne either performed or wrote for this record. Coven’s bass player and co-writer who wrote their “Black Sabbath”, is named Michael “Oz” Osborne, whereas Ozzy Osbourne’s proper name is John Michael Osbourne. There’s absolutely no connection between the two just an interesting coincidence.Coven introduced many staples of satanic rock that would greatly influence Heavy Metal. Their first album contained the first recorded use of the phrase “Hail Satan”, inverted crosses are featured in the album artwork, and according to Coven they first used the sign of the horns. The use of horns is usually attributed in metal circles to the iconic second Sabbath frontman Ronnie James Dio. Their cover for the album was shocking in its occult and sexual imagery for the time. I’m sure Jinx Dawson influenced many a shopper to buy this album. A sort of Satanic panic of the early 70s around the Manson Family Murders. This led to the album being pulled from the shelves. Their second self-titled album earned them a hit single in 1971, with, One Tin Soldier, that was also featured in weirdo martial arts western film, Billy Jack. It became a classic rock radio staple with an anti-war message. In 1974 they released a third album and broke up. Years later the band got control of their masters at the same time that nostalgia was leading to frequent interviews and playing of their music. Dawson used listener interest as a good reason to get back together and reformed Coven with a new lineup. They have been touring and performing ever since. The members of Coven have accused Black Sabbath of stealing their act in some ways. There’s no evidence that either band knew about each other and the members of Sabbath have always been quick to add that they aren’t Satanists and the only real connection is one song with the same title as their album and band, but that otherwise they are very different musically. This started a long one way feud of Coven resenting Black Sabbath.A more contemporary satanic band is the Australian gothic rock band Ikon. The band in 1991 and for most of its history it has been the brainchild of Chris McCarter. McCarter is a LaVeyan Satanist and has expressed his beliefs in their Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy tradition of gothic rock, as opposed to goth industrial or goth synth. Ikon is a heavy rock band, with dark, intelligent, somber lyrics. They are definitely not metal, just heavy dark rock. Very good stuff.Another current band is NON, the stage and recording name for Church of Satan Priest, industrial noise artist, and provocateur Boyd Rice. Since the mid-70s Rice has been making harsh unrelenting electronic music, often with samples from 1940s and 50s era pop songs. His performances are intentionally transgressive designed to attack the senses through sheer volume, intense light, and other modes of affecting people. Rice was a close friend of Anton LaVey and he is a CoS member as well as a member of the bizarre Partridge Family Temple. Rice is publicly friends with Neo-Nazis while claiming not to be one himself. He has also collaborated with friends that were Jewish, including LaVey who had some Jewish ancestry. Not fun music exactly and a lot of baggage their. My final non-metal Satanic band is The Electric Hellfire Club. Just to be completely honest their most recent album, 2002’s, Electronomicon, incorporated heavy Black Metal elements into their music. The EHC formed in 1991 in Wisconsin. Their first 8 releases are all industrial rock albums with the first few leaning toward Industrial dance music, although the heaviest possible definition for that. They then slightly segued into a more hook oriented cyber punk sound. Singer and writer Thomas Thorne is a member of The Church of Satan. All of their songs are about their beliefs. Often presenting themselves lyrically like an underground cult for evil artistocrats. Musically they are heavy with a definite danceable groove. There not playing metal just heavy synth and guitar rock with gothy fun but sincere lyrics. Rob Zombie once saw The Electric Hellfire Club perform and called them the best band in the world and that he wished White Zombie were as cool as Electric Hellfire Club. Great band.
