PDF Editor FAQ

I told my boss that I'm going to resign, and he fired me on the spot. Can he legally do that as I resigned first?

This happened to me in 2016 when I resigned from a job. I typed up a very professional resignation letter, stating that I am giving 2 weeks notice for my resignation meaning I would work until ____ date. In Quebec, bosses are not allowed to fire you on the spot when you quit, unless they are willing to pay you your 2 weeks but not have you come in, which most bosses choose not to do. In my case, the boss read over my letter, said it was fine and I returned to my classroom. 1 hour before the end of my shift, she entered my classroom and asked me to come to the office to have a chat. I told my collegue I would be back and left with the boss. When we got to the office, she told me that she thought about it and decided to let me go right then and there, told me not to tell the kids or parents it was my last day, to pack up my personal supplies and leave. I was upset but had a feeling this was coming. I packed up my stuff and whispered to my collegue what she had done, to which my collegue replied “I'm so not surprised, I had a feeling she would screw you like that". She also suggested I ask for my 2 weeks paid as I gave notice in my resignation letter. When I asked the boss, she said absolutely not, I quit so she has no reason to pay me. I filed a complaint with “Normes du Travail" who explained to me that she had no right to do that and owes me 2 weeks pay. They called her and she told them I didn’t give any notice and told her that would be my last day, which was BS. I sent my resignation letter to Normes du Travail and won my case. It took over 4 months to recieve the cheque from her for my 2 weeks pay but fighting for my rights and winning was worth the wait.I don't know where you are from and what your rights are, but I strongly suggest you look into it and fight for what you are entitled to. Good luck!

My manager said she is not able to keep my position anymore but asks me for a resignation letter. Am I fired, or did I quit?

I don’t usually suggest edits so if I’m doing this wrong I apologize, but this extra word changes the meaning of the sentence in a way I don’t believe you intended! Look for asterisks (***) in paragraph 2.I agree with the consensus (30 years in payroll): you’re being at will fired or laid off, which in your case amounts to the same thing.Don’t go for a voluntary resignation. Resigning under the circumstance might *** remove the word “not” *** in the end mean no unemployment. You can argue that you were forced out, and if accepted, you’d get unemployment. It becomes a matter of proof. If multiple people all voluntarily quit (without another job) at the same time, DOL will be suspicious. But if it’s just you and your manager denies ever suggesting it, now what?

I asked my boss for a raise but he said I didn't deserve it, so I sent him my resignation letter. Now he is asking me to stay with a higher salary. Should I accept his offer?

Rule #1: Companies don’t care about you and will always serve their best interests.Rule #2: Because of Rule #1, you should not show loyalty to the company, but serve your best interests. Conclusion: Take the raise and find yourself a better job - do not plan on staying at the current employer.
