I went through the Blue Angels selection process many years ago. Although I was not ultimately selected, it was a very interesting, enjoyable, and eye-opening experience. This is how it works:A year prior to the summer season, an applicant who meets the criteria as expressed below will send to the Commander of the Blue Angels an application letter. (A sample letter can be seen below.) The pilot applicant’s letter will then be endorsed by his commanding officer and the commander of the carrier air group (CAG). The letter along with endorsements will then be sent to the Blue Angel CO.From then on, the selection process is very similar to a college fraternity rush. The pilot applicant is encouraged to attend as many airshows as possible and to hang out with the Blue Angel Team. This process is called, “chasing the Blues.” Applicants are allowed to sit in on airshow briefings (but not debriefs), attend social functions with the team, and often go to dinner with them. This gives the applicant a better understanding of the demands on the Team, and it gives the Team a good idea of how the applicant will fit in the members of the Team and how they will project themselves to the public.Once that summer season is completed, the Team will select the best candidate to join them for winter training and the next show season.“Criteria for Selection. Criteria for selection include demonstrated professional performance and professional reputation, ability to serve as an ambassador of the Navy and Marine Corps to public and international audiences, and cohesiveness with other team members who travel 300 days per year. Criteria for Naval Aviators include all of the above, with additional heavy emphasis on pilot skill.”“Applicants should be career-oriented, active-duty Navy and Marine Corps officers with the following specific qualifications: a. F/A-18 demonstration pilot applicants must be carrier qualified tactical jet pilots with approximately 1,250 hours of jet flight time by 30 September of the application year and have completed an operational fleet tour.
