PDF Editor FAQ

Was the FSA (Free Syrian Army) always a jihadist organization or did it change as the war progressed?

It didn’t change. Various FSA units aligned with either the Kurds, the Turks, the Jihadists or in one unique case, tried to survive on their own.FSA fighters and YPG fighters eating a meal togetherThe Free Syrian Army (FSA) was formed in July 2011 when Syrian officers like General Mustafa Al-Sheikh , who served in the Syrian Army for 32 years, defected and formed their own armed forces. To lead the war effort, the FSA established a central command and formed official FSA units like the 13th Division and 101st Infantry Division as well as “legitimizing” (integrating/accepting) other rebel groups that wanted to join the FSA.Recruits in the 13th division at a training campThis made the FSA a viable force and many foreign nations, both Gulf and Western , began to finance the FSA believing it had a chance at success thanks to its experienced and hardened leadership and rudimentary military system. To ensure legitimacy, the FSA accepted secular republicanism as its main ideology, something that made it acceptable in the West and led to the West agreeing to provide the FSA with large amounts of money and weapons as well as training. To cement this, the FSA even made a Syrian Feminist and Secularist, the Vice President of its Political wing.Suheir Atassi (woman in the middle) , a woman, a feminist and a secularist. Also Vice President of the Syrian National Coalition for several years. In the photo: Atassi posing with FSA fightersHowever this was premature as the FSA got, to put it vulgarly, its ass kicked. The story of its failure is too long so I’ll try to summarize it in two paragraphs:It had a great start and took all of Northern Syria and parts of the South. However its drive in Aleppo and Damascus, its main goals, its dream, the focal point of its propaganda campaign and all it worked for, collapsed into ruin as a bloody multi-year long siege began. This should have been seen when the FSA’s attack on Damascus in 2012 (Battle of Damascus (2012)) ended in disaster with hundreds of FSA fighters and officers lying dead in the streets of the now war-torn capital in just 2 weeks. Or the weekly Aleppo assaults that resulted in no gains.Damascus after the FSA tried to enter the city by forceDuring this time, Jihadist groups rose up and rather than combat them, the FSA either ignored them or even worked with them as they shared a common enemy. This proved its undoing when ISIS attackedSyria 2013, Red = Assad, Green = FSA , Yellow = KurdsSyria August 2014, notice how in just 1 year, the FSA lost all of its eastern territory to ISIS. ISIS’ offensive killed the FSA and took them by surpriseISIS’ surprise 2014 offensive ended with almost of all of Northern Syria, and the vast majority of the FSA’s territory being lost to ISIS. To make matters worse, the Jihadist groups that the FSA ignored or worked with betrayed it and took part in the frenzy.Al-Qaeda linked Al-Nusra fought alongside the FSA in Aleppo, so the FSA let its guard down and in 2016, the Jihadists launched a nighttime raid against the 13th Division’s headquarters taking many of its officers prisoner in the Battle of Maarrat al-Nu'man.However as far early as 2014, FSA officers realized that the FSA was dying and that their foreign sponsors could do nothing to stop it.So they began aligning with any stronger faction that would take them.FSA units in the North (like the Northern Sun Battalion, Northern Democratic Brigade , and Seljuk Brigade) turned to the Kurds. The YPG had become battle-tested and occupied a large part of FSA territory and even attacked ISIS. Thus many FSA commanders felt it was a smart choice to work with the Kurds. The YPG, under American pressure, accepted and together, a FSA-YPG alliance known as the Syrian Democratic Forces.YPG fighters and FSA fighters standing togetherIn fact these FSA units played a major role in the Siege of Kobanî when they came to the Kurds’ defense. However other FSA units sided with the Kurds’ rival, Turkey.Turkish soldiers (to the left) and FSA fighters (to the right)After Al-Qaeda’s humiliating night raid, the 13th Division’s commander begged the Turkish Military to prop up his men. He was soon followed by the officers of the 23rd Division, and the Northern Storm Brigade. Turkey accepted thus forming what is now called the Turkish-backed Free Syrian Army (this name is given to them by foreign journalists to differentiate them from the pro-Jihadist and pro-Kurd FSA units).Other FSA units decided to align with the Jihadists.FSA fighters with Jihadists from Al-Nusra (now called HTS) and Ahrar al-Sham , Al-Nusra/HTS is linked to Al-Qaeda , Ahrar al-Sham is an independent Jihadist groupThe 1st Coastal Division, the 23rd Division, and the Elite Army (FSA Special forces) thought it was safer and smarter to work with the Jihadists in Northwestern Syria and aligned with them instead. Now of course you may ask:Why did the FSA split in such a way?Well the answer is that the FSA wasn’t very centralized since it was formed in a revolution. As a result, the FSA’s central command gave vague strategic orders but let its commanders on the ground do whatever they pleased. This means many of the FSA fighters looked to their commander rather than the FSA for orders and followed their lead. One of the best examples being Abu Layla who was a charismatic and popular Kurdish FSA officer. So when Abu Layla told his men they were going to align with the YPG, they followed him without question.Abu Layla (1984–2016)So when ISIS dealt the final blow to the FSA, the choices facing the FSA commanders were:Give up and concede defeat, beg Assad for forgiveness: this may work for the FSA soldiers, but the FSA officers would certainly be executed.Go out on their own: This is what happened with the Southern FrontBeg the nearby stronger groups for help or an alliance: Which is what resulted in the situation above. with pro-Jihadist, pro-Kurd and pro-Turkey FSA units.

If I buy a farmland, am I required to farm?

No. But if the land has a history of growing "program" crops like corn, cotton, or soybeans, you might jeapordise you ability to get handout money from the government if your farm is idled for too long a period. You may also want to see if it can be placed into the "conservation reserve", which pays you to idle land. Check with your local FSA office.Farmed or not, you do have a legal obligation to control noxious weeds (thistles, etc.) that may be present on your property.

Are Arabs trying to invade Turkey with mass migration?

No, there was a refugee wave and they’re going home now. When the Syrian Civil War started most Syrians thought it would end quickly. Now it’s year 9, because of this millions of Syrians fled abroad as they feel their country has no future. As the violence has went for a long time and it is impossible to escape it through the normality of daily life. As seen when one Syrian school tried organize a fun art festival for children to help ease their minds.Children’s Art at Syria School, and Then a BombWounded child in a Syrian field hospital, unrelated to the bombing aboveThe festival was bombed and 17 children were killed. Erdogan agreed to let Syrian refugees stay in Turkey until it blows over. With the United Nations estimating 3,540,000 Syrian refugees living in Turkey.UNHCR Turkey Factsheet - August 2018 - TurkeyNow you may then ask:Does this mean Turkey is being Arabized? Are the Arabs going to take over? No. Erdogan invaded Syria in 2016 and 2018, occupying a large part of the North.Turkish soldiers and their tanksWhat does that have to do with anything?Simple. Turkey invested in those areas, rebuilt homes, roads, schools and hospitals and the presence of the Turkish Military assures Syrians that they can go to art festivals and bakeries without fear of being killed. So:500,000 Syrians 'will return to Afrin' after fighting ends, says Turkey's First LadyNearly 312,000 Syrians return home after Turkish ops: Minister - Turkey NewsNorthern SyriaCongratulations, you now understand Erdogan’s plans in Northern Syria. Nor is he finished, earlier this year the Turkish Government declared it may establish even more “safe zones” in Syria.Turkey's proposed safe zone in Syria would address the refugee crisisThe idea being Turkey occupies more Syrian land, Turkish Military sets up bases, the Syrian refugees in Turkey can pack up and go back to Syria knowing the Turkish Military will protect them thus killing two birds with one stone as:Contrary to popular belief, Erdogan is a conservative but a Turkish conservative. He does not want to Arabize Turkey and is happy to reduce the number of Arabs in Turkey. This helps Turkey flex its military muscle by proving to the world that Turkey can play a positive role and that it’s more powerful than it has been since the end of the Ottoman Empire. There’s the additional benefit of giving Turkey an excuse to use its new attack helicopters, artillery and drones which helps arms sales by proving they work well.Turkish companies’ arms sales rose 24 percent last yearYou may then ask:But wait, aren’t Syrians getting Turkish citizenship?Only FSA fighters who fight for Turkey. The 2016 and 2018 Turkish invasions weren’t swarms of Turkish soldiers fighting in Syria but actually Arab Syrian fighters being supported by the Turkish Air Force and Turkish tanks. It’s for this reason why a low number of Turkish soldiers were killed, it’s because Turkish soldiers aren’t actually fighting. Erdogan realizes that he needs to keep the FSA loyal to Turkey so he offers families of dead FSA fighters Turkish citizenship and money, while wounded FSA fighters only get money.Turkish-backed FSA fightersAs one FSA officer explained:Lieutenant Abdallah Halawa, commander of the Hamza Brigade rebels, said the family of each fighter killed in Afrin was getting 60,000 Turkish Lira ($9,142.02).Relatives of 65 men from his faction have already been compensated. They will get housing and citizenship in Turkey, he told Reuters.“It does not compare to what they sacrificed but, to the best of our abilities, it’s about honoring them.”Injured rebels will also later receive 15,000 Turkish Lira each, and may get up to 30,000 if disabled.Turkey offers cash, promises passports to families of Syria rebelsAccording Turkey around 300 FSA fighters died in 2018. Assuming each of those FSA fighters had 1 wife and 3 children, then that’s only 1,200 Syrians who will get Turkish citizenship and move to Turkey permanently. Although Erdogan has said he is open to giving beneficial Syrians citizenship as well.So there you have it.Arabs are not trying to invade TurkeyErdogan is not trying to Arabize TurkeyTurkey will not have a large Arab minority or majority
