What does accepting cookies on a website really mean for your privacy?

Accepting a cookie from a website is equal to an advanced threat. A Trojan or worm was the best way to describe the actions tracked by security experts. In the past these were nuances (mostly).Today, these cookies can be far more of a threat but have been given such a harmless name.I personally lost track of the number of laptops, desktop and smart phones which exceeded my data plan usage after a week. What does this have to do with the question? Cookies most often open the door for constant streaming or data collection. See recent accusations against Facebook, Google and Amazon (shortlist).I personally monitored an application called Clickstream when I noticed machineid values were being collected and the largest daily volume of data inbound to an organization. Since then, a trend surfaced. Any organization using the application collects the same massive volumes. See the security industry skills gap and\or consider the breach trends from 2011 forward. In 2012, we changed the threat landscape on security reports accepting many Worms and trojans reclassified as cookies. At the same time we began to accept Big data as its own technology which includes machine learning, video surveillance and artificial intelligence. We introduced smart devices which behave in a bidirectional feed into and out of our homes, cars and mobile phones.Big data was born on Hadoop appliances, the technology had one security feature “mass delete”. Zero plans for security features like user authentication or encryption. Basically everything we need to protect is going into big data stores without any true tracking or forensic audit capabilities. Any proposed security would require an individual to know every source and every unique name of users data in a massive container that promotes the value of not being a modeled environment. Unstructured is the norm and benefit according to experts from the workgroups at NIST. I spent too much time as a volunteer in NIST security and privacy workgroup. If we use the optimistic view that accepts 95% of the world is doing good: we might feel my answer is a dooms day response when marketing is hardly out to get civil society. You might even prescribe to the ideal only criminals object to mass collection of every click on any device. No, I am not happy to sponsor the data usage. Nor do I want to pay the energy use and associated local fees which doubled my gas and electric bill.Any of the typical “one time know your customer” collection of demographic information has turned into intrusive take over my control of any device I use.To answer the question more directly; let me share the response I got from a guy who worked in a data store. I spent days trying to get an honest answer from many in IT. I knew the answer as I worked in videoconferencing as it launched in 1993. I never imagined data would ever be used to bypass standards we use with technology.Consider no one was honest in responding to what was being collected. Then, consider my final inquiry was strictly “off the record” and limited to how his job was effected by the constant stream “ I’ve seen far too many bathrooms lately”.If going to the restroom is intended to need privacy? Then, dont agree to sites using cookies. I strongly advise you avoid taking your phone into the restroom. People see your most private activity in some IT department. The cookie is the first step in taking what seems like; harmless information for marketing purposes. However, a persons machine id allows anyone to take control of your device beyond typical threat software view or beyond the scope of what we know and monitor using Mobility with broadband(IP6) as thee new norm, we began mainstreaming machine to machine controls (M2M). Unfortunately, a cookie seems harmless until you understand the way IT can exploit these harmless things.
