They’re asking you questions that you should be able to answer with ease, and which they can check against CBP records or other sources. They’re not interrogating you as to your legitimacy to claim citizenship, or even as to whether you are a national security risk, but just to verify that you’re really who your documents say you are. If they’re not convinced, they aren’t allowed to let you in; at the same time, they can’t send you back, which means you go to secondary processing and/or detention until it gets sorted out.
